Instrumentals

I personally am not a great lover of instrumentals, being a bit of handbag I like to have a sing along when I dance or listen to my records.

Last night I was coming to the end of an emotionally shit, socially flat weekend and dreading that Monday morning feeling. But instead of reaching for the usual "feeling sorry for my self" type records, I dusted off about 2" of dust off "Bok to Bach".

Had forgotten what a really lifting toon this is. Sometimes because a sound is overplayed or not seen to be "IN" we tend to forget how great they made us feel 20-30 years ago.

Went to bed a lot more cheery and did not have severe Monday morning blues today. Probably first time it's been out of it's cover for about 7 years or more.

What's your favourite instrumental or are there any instrumentals that lift your spirits?

Condition Red- Just makes me feel daft which is great for Monday morning

Other fav - Six oclock- Total eclipses - We will probably hear avocal version of this sometime in the future made up by someone and said its along lost tape eg just like the magicians! :)

And I did hear it played at Wigan by Russ a couple of times in about 74/75.

I always loved Sax On The Track by Mike & Ike. Haven't heard it for years though. Personally I love instrumentals as part of the scene. But I don't go out anymore so I am in it for the rose tinted nostalgia. Although it was my era, I certainly hated all the synthesizer instrumentals done by S Soussan.

morning chris i like 6 by 6 and love green onions. in fact i like a lot of the hammond organ stuff with a heavy bassy back beat and slapback guitar

I Can't sing - can't dance either. But it's my front room and I'll make a fool of myself however I want, mind you need to get the blinds fixed or the neighbours may send round the men in little white coats one night!! :)

Did'nt used to like instrumentals. Recently got a copy of Trammps-Scrub board and might just be changing my mind on this one.

Might even listen to Bari Trak :)

On the 70s / 80s front I'd plump for:

Willie Tolliver featuring Andrew Love "Bit off more than I can chew" (Thin Dime)

Ramsey & Co "Love calling" (Ramco)

Ramsey Lewis "Spring High" (Columbia)

Jr Walker & Allstars "I ain't going nowhere" (Tamla Motown)

'Soul Step' by the Dogs always envokes happy memories for me. Young Jacko, member of this very site and all round top man, and I were at a do in Peterborough having our usual debate on all things soulful whilst the Rockin' Rev, Tony Clayton, was behind the wheels of steel. During the course of said discussion the Rev spun an instrumental (forget what) and Jacko gave me his speech, complete with expletives and hand gestures. on just how f**king sh**e instrumentals were and had nothing to do with soul whatsoever!!! I was impressed by his passion on this subject and, as he was older than I, made a mental note of his comments. So, imagine my surprise and shock when, just as he finished his impassioned rant, the Rev announced the next record..."and now we have another great sound from the late Nev's collection, the wonderful instrumental sound of The Dogs and Soul Step!' The hall errupts and Jacko turns to me and, without the slighest hint of irony or even shame, says: "F**K ME! I LOVE THIS RECORD!!!!" and then procedes to hit the dancefloor,leaving me and my now floor bound jaw to watch in amazement!

Ah, the memories. hats off to you Jacko and still my fave instrumental of all time.

Do you mean Voltaire Pier? If it is I had a copy of this arrive today but on the Omega label, came with a near mint picture sleeve. I really like it :rolleyes:

Still got a soft spot for Jimmy Conwell's 'Cigarette Ashes' - although I think 'Could it Be', the flip side to Richard Temple's 'Beatin' Rythmn' is a great soul record also :rolleyes:

Was talking about this recently, was this covered up as Casinos Strut by Richard and available on 45 and LP??

Frank Foster is definitely the Daddy of all instrumentals, gets me by the bollocks!! Anyone remember Hey Girl - Peter Hamilton (?) on Jamie? Searling covered it up as Clouds as tribute to Clouds All Nighter in Edinburgh

Back when I could dance a little I used to go berserk to 6 by 6.

Think another special mention should go to "Billy's Bag" though.

Have to agree , heard it down the 100 club at the weekend and it still sounds as good as it did in the late 80's !!!

99% of instrumentals are like Chinese Water Torture to me, but one I do have a soft spot for is 'Frankie Crocker' Ton Of Dynamite.

Could do with a cheap boot/re-issue of this for a pressie for my Dad.

Without doubt one of my favourite double siders.:ok:

The arrangements are fantastic and both the vibes and guitar playing (on both sides), are in my opinion more soulful than a lot of vocals played on the scene. :thumbsup:

Jr walker,i aint going nowhere first i heard there was inst`of this,is this true?,oh! and i have The chocolate boys thing somewhere,it is very much like R Lewis,any body know anything about these euro-poper rockers,proberly never sold any because of there name,i wonder i if this is a pressing mistake,like my Johny Sales,what can i do,12"/LP not sure what cat` to put this in 6ts looking press,but the lable is same but with centre,play this and get Jimmy Endrix,live ,work that out,would this be worth anything?,or is this a ashtray.
