Ah, now I didn't say it doesn't happen.... I asked if it should... Because I question this I dont know this scene at all?... OK, if you say so. I dont claim to know the answer's, I just asked the question - should it / would it.....

I wasn't saying anything was right or wrong, I was just wondering what people's thoughts were... :g:

yeh, I realised what you meant when I re-read it... sorry if I sounded 'touchy' - I guess that's what happens when you're posting on here

whilst getting grief off the boss (might have helped if I hadn't spent all day on here instead of doing what I should have been) LOL

Time to go home!.

Unless you're Fatboy Slim I don't think any DJ is comfortable enough to turn down money...besides...it's not him you're playing for...it's the people through the door...just take his cash and make sure you request a big rider hahaha

ha ha, riders on the soul scene...that made me laugh thinking about what certain personalities would request :g::lol:

When I was promoting I never put personal feelings first when it came to selecting DJs...and believe me over the years I had some right w**kers DJ for me...primadonnas who made the DJs in this scene look like they are Humble

But my feeling is on the matter that if they play great records and get punters through the door...I don't care what they are like on a personal level...I thibnk if you limit your options on who you like...especially in the music business...then you are going to struggle on all levels...suppose it's just networking...have hundreds of associates in Manchester...but I could count on one hand the amount of people I trust...you don't have to like the DJs you book...just use them to your advantage.

Hi Beeks,

may be going a bit off topic but I just wonder what type of event you promoted as I understand you're a relative newcomer to the Northern scene

Hi Mark...My own night was mainly a mix really...predominantly mainstream soul...your mayfields/gayes, Leon Haywood type stuff...mixed with more modern soul(not the 70s modern) like Amp Fiddler, Musiq Soul Child, Jill Scott, Stephanie Mckay, Terri Walker etc. but most nights it was pretty much across the board...played alot of trojan...lovers reggae like Alton Ellis, Derrick Morgan, Ken Boothe etc...and even broken beat stuff...had Phil Asher up from the West London scene just one of many guests from various genres

Previous to that I lived with the guys who ran Eyes Down which was predominantly Broken Beats for which I helped out when I was not busy myself

and previous to that I worked for Fat City records helping promote what was then 'Counter Culture' in a club called Planet K...we also did one offs in the Ritz with massive acts like The Pharcyde and De La Soul...Counter Culture was mainly Party Hip Hop along the lines of the above artists aimed mainly at the students

Actually while i'm thinking about it...one of the banes of my life used to be Agents...do the big names like Butch et al have them? Or when promoters on this scene book a big name do they deal with the DJs direct?

personally i wouldn't book someone i don't like or rate, in work i have to deal/work with people i don't particularly like i don't really have much choice unfortunately but the soul scene is my hobby so why would i book dj and pay them with my hard earned cash if i don't like them (although i can't think of any dj's i don't like at the moment)

I've made my living for the last twelve years as a promoter - mostly in Bristol - and a DJ (around the UK, all over Europe, Australia), on the 'dance' music scene, obviously not the Northern scene.

As a DJ, I'd rather not play for people I didn't like, but sometimes it happens.

As a promoter, if the DJ's a shit, they don't get booked again, simple. Life's too short for that - luckily on the sub-genres I've worked in, most people are fine, if a bit sketchy in the early hours sometimes.

Dj's directly but Acts maybe through agents I would imagine...

Crickey! dont go suggesting that DJ's get agents!... imagine that!...

Seeing another post on another thread got me wondering....

Would you / should you let your personal feelings towards another person stop you supporting them, even if they had soul music to die for?..

For instance... would/should a promotor book a DJ that they didn't like, even if said DJ had the tunes ?

Would you still support a DJ if you didn't like that person but they play some of your favourite tunes, or an amazing DJ but a git of a person - would it stop you

dancing, listening etc to the music you love?.... same with venue's I suppose... would you support a venue if they played excellent music but you didn't like

the promotor or DJ's... just wondering what people's limits would be when it comes to hearing the music they love..

:D

Jayne.x. (Still avoiding the completion of her month end work)..

I have gone to venues with the same delima and will do in the future. If you are in a room with about another 100 people and your friends does it matter who the promoter/DJ is as long as you are enjoying the music and you don't have to speak to them

Yeah, when I last booked Soul Sam his landlady came on the line and said "Martin isn't free that week, but can do the week after" laugh.gif

i dont think you have to hire a dj or even play for a promoter you dont like...lets face it theres no shortage of djs or events out there....

last year i started working with a dj in bris we did a few nites in different clubs and things were going well...after 6 weekly gigs in an 'uptown' club wed had some good publicity and things were going good...i turned up as normal....my mates tunes were there but no sign of him....manager called me in the office and i was told i wasnt wanted cos i played to much 'specialised soul' and my 'mate' was going alone playing more commercial stuff.....no discussion thats it....and this is despite me doin it alone the last time as my mate was on hols an it being the best yet...their words !

my mate could have told me,save me my taxi money.....wed talked about this a couple of weeks before when another promoter freind of mine was looking for a partner but i told my mate i would have turned him down as i was already doin this with him....a few extra quid turned his head and was worth more than our 'friendship'....

my mate never answered phone calls,texs....still dont speak to the bullshitter and wouldnt piss on him if he was on fire let alone book or dj for him !....as you can see im still a bit pissed off bout it! biggrin.gif

the night only lasted a few more weeks and ive gone on to much better things with MUCH more professional, honest people....
