I'm no expert, but i believe it's just down to reducing any vibration/sound other than the vinyl source.......

Call me old fashioned, Brett, but that looks like a machine of torture!!

I thought the best one was 'laser' type one that causes no wear or deterioration to the vinyl.

But I may try 2 of these babies at Soulsville before going on to the laser ones

Clearly just a marketing trick. Who'd want to have two speakers cluttering up their living room? You can pretend that you have got stereo without the expense if you really want it by sticking a finger in one ear. I reckon.
