Souled Out Film Hits Trouble?

Your arguments against the costume & badges in particular are very vague. As i said I'll resond to q's about costume. In fact I did say pre '75, meaning '74.When you say 'they didn't really care' who exactly are you referring to? Not me thats for sure..If anyone raised a Q to me during the filming it was answered truthfully with reason. I repeat my Q to you (so far unanswered) did you actually attend ANY of the filming, if so in what capacity? Your mate copey may have raised his Q to someone who was unqualified to answer it, & then assumed it wasn't important. For instance when Dave Evison came to DJ for a dance scene (he was off camera) he asked me if I had any more of the bar towels (that dancers used to wipe their sweat, usually tucked into waist belts) I replied we had but as this shot was a close up (head & shoulders)& they wouldn't be seen it wasn't important. He understood, but someone else might have not, maybe your mate copey. As for the baggy trousers, there are several great photos taken from mid '74 that clearly show baggy soul trousers being worn, I was already wearing a pair in '74 & these were available from said tailors plus Roxy threads in Nottingham, plus many corner shop tailors.Of course not eveyone wore them but versions of them were already a fashion staple in the high st, these were not the spencers soul trousers, they came later & were much wider.I repeat, much care & research was taken with regard to costume, but as in many cases, their are always one or two who insist on wearing their own clothing, if they slipped thru the net , I doubt they'll be seen on screen after editing, thats the important thing.I was a regular at the casino for much of 1974, I based my reseach on this & my ( & others) personal photos, my brother & I were partners in a fashion shop & we sold a lot of 'soul fashion' mail order thru Blues & soul, I honestly doubt anyone was more qualified to costume this film, if there are I'd like to meet them!

Nice.....Respect...sounds like a good job! As I said, I was only going on what my mate said and you have put those worries to rest All it took was an eloquent (not arsey, as many seem to be) reply. Hey, are you the Roxy Thread guy, used to go there myself and Paul Smiths in Notts?

I can't understand how you could be so against it without seeing it. Personally I wouldn't form an opinion (nevermind a strong opinion as many on here have) on something I know nothing about or haven't yet seen and I couldn't respect someone's opinion on a subject if that was the case.

Sorry I added my reasons after I posted the first bit.

We all come at Northern Soul from different angles. I'm not saying I'm right, but I do believe strongly enough, that this film has nothing to do with my idea about Northern Soul, any more than I think Green Street has anything to do with West Ham fans.

I'm not as passionately against it as Paul is, but I am 100% sure I wont watch it.

Classic what? you can hardly muster an intelligent line? Would be very suprised if you knew what 'classic' meant? You got time off school today? :)

Yeah I'm bunking off with my mate Tucker. He's never heard of northern soul.

I wonder if the film will get me excited about 'northern soul' again. Excited enough to want to stay up all night and do all that driving...and spend all that money. I hope so. I'll watch it just in case. I think a bit of artistic embellishment may be necessary to make the whole thing interesting enough to be entertaining to anyone apart from those involved in the scene. A load of people get smashed & dance all night.. it happens on lots of underground 'scenes'.. I'd quite like to see a film about the 1980's disco/modern/ jazz funk scene... what exactly went on at the Epping Forest Country Club??

My history is only 20 yrs so a bit of knowledge would be quite interesting. I do northern soul for fun, greatly admire those with the commitment and time to study the records/ history/ clothes etc. virtually to Masters degree level, but that's not me.

Yeah nice one, bit of a film... I was invited to be 'mother with pram'.. fancied the idea but couldn't make it unfortunately, on a working day, couldn't spare the holiday. Always avoided these 'dancing for nothing & get filmed' type gigs- just not my sort of thing- I think my dancing looks crap on film anyway.

Anyway see you at the premier at the Barbican or whatever...guess it'll be advertised on here, maybe a few free tickets. Can't make it to Cannes unfortunately.

High waistband- cord baggies. First time i seen them was on top of the pops 1974 Cockney Rebel (Steve Harley) -mr soft was wearing them soon after, less me brain is gone.

Added that he was also wearing leather souled oxfords, again memory bit hazy

CHECK OUT THIS BITTER 'Butterball' from the 'souled out' team. At least shes not pretentious! :(:) or contradictory. After saying they were recreating WIGAN. Its now "just A Film". Great professional, precise attitude....bless her. . Can I just point out that not ALL film makers have such a slack attitude to socio-historic representation in films....having worked with Shane Meadows..blah,blah,blah...

as for "green eyed"? I wrote to their funders over 4 years ago asking that they put the money to better use rather giving it to such a slack effort...and NO i didn't ask for it to go to me.

Paul, she's not from the Souled Out team. She has nothing to do with the film. You keep banging on about getting the facts right! Get your own facts right mate.

My only gripe about the film was that they used the original recordings - especially for the dance scenes.

How do you know what music they've used for the dance scenes? Seen the finished film? More second guessing. Wearisome.

It's all a bit disappointing that some people want this film to fail for whatever reasons...........

I'll definitely go and see it, so I can make my own mind up, about how good it is or isn't, as a film!

Winnie :-)

Ive never said i want it to fail just that it will probally be shit :D

Because in the original publicity for this film they made a point of mentioning Duffy, Weller, Ronson & Weinhouse, nothing about any authentic music until they got slagged off on here.

They seem to say different things depending on who they're talking to, one minute it's a love story that just happens to feature the Northern scene, next it's a film about Wigan Casino. Is it any wonder we don't trust them.

Confused about this..

I must have missed it. When did they said it's a film about Wigan Casino?

And when did they say that Duffy, Weller, Ronson & Weinhouse, would be used IN the film?

Perhaps we should wait until the films comes out before slagging it any further?

Sooooo negative.

To be fair...and i'm a great supporter of the 'Wait and see' brigade...those names have been bandied about...but i'm under the impression the artists mentioned while might have a part to play in the overall soundtrack...will not be used for the Casino scenes...I could be wrong...but that is the impression I get

I am going to wait till the film comes out, I haven't slagged it off since they assured us it would feature authentic music. All I've said is that I don't trust the people in charge of making this film.

Anyway, what's your connection to it?

Quote from the Sentinel

"the film Souled Out which will chart the rise of the Northern Soul scene"

Someone from the film mentioned Duffy, Weller, Weinhouse & Ronson on the Radio Stoke soul show giving the impression that they would be contributing music to the film.
