Wigan No.1's

Tim Tam-Wait a minute was a big and popular spin so much so it got booted, but if memory serves it only got spun for about a week or 2 (at the Casino) at most around 1976/7, i forget which year, but it got found-out as being on UK, and that was a sort of no-no at the Casino. Me, i liked it, but i remember many hated it with a passion which pretty much killed any future releases by the group which by my reckoning was 10+ years when "Dont Say Hi" was found and never even got played cos it was white and even tho its DETROIT it aint exactly the right NS play. Thats the politics of the scene i believe. "HI" is a very powerful NS stomper and 10 times better than "wait". Plus "HI" is voc/ins so the loss to NS fans of a cracking inst side, Detroit to boot, well what can i say about that. Sure its all about personal taste but had "HI" been known about in '76, "Wait.." would have never seen the light of day.

We all thought it was Tiny Tim at the time - and it was awful - reckon that's why it got dropped.

Horrid record.

I can tell you for definite - first ever spin was march 11th 1978, day after my 18th birthday, and sadly I have it on tape because Minshull played it twice in his set, I think he actually played it as a joke to wind up his mate Lewie.

Just a few to add whilst my oil based undercoat paint dries,

Seven Souls, Jimmie Macfarlene, The Chandlers, Eddie Parker, Coral Anderson, Stemmon Express, Tony Middleton, Larry Houston, Herb Ward, Lester Tipton (memories of Nev Wherry), John Bowie, Eddie Holman -(Where Im Not Wanted), Frank Dell. All number one's in my ears at WC.

Thanks.

Nick

Sorry ken, it's all about opinions and those two are amongst the worst EVER

hi pete, i have an old tape from wigan which "lips to your heart" was played alongside other, now more popular records. there were far more people clapping along to "lips" than most of the others... proving how popular that particular track was.

as for me liking the track now... this is irrelevant to me. i have been loyal to most of the records played back then, and the people, who i considered my "other family". its certainly not one of the greatest but it serves up great memories, which are important to me. my top 5 in those days varied, but "i cant see him again"-twans, "where im not wanted"-eddie holman, "if thats what you wanted"-butlers, "tell me its just a rumour"-isley bros, "stick by me baby"-salvadors were there.

keep the faith

I don't know why I was bunging the miracles in the same sack then.

I attended all-nighters in the east anglia area from late 74 & throughout 75 & 76, with occasional visits up north to wigan. I just don't remember the miracles getting plays at the wirrina or st.ives. paul donnelly might be able to put me right on that front. I remember all the ian levine produced stuff, and things like barnaby bye, rodger collins, alpaca phase III etc, but NOT the miracles. maybe it's a case of selective memory. the mind is a funny old thing...

M

we used to play thre tracks of the Miracles album Adrian..

Love Machine was deffo played however pushing the boundries as we did at the Wirrina...Overture and Waldo Roderick? off the same album got more plays.

You must have been in the bogs with Trotter showing each other your loafers?

In the bogs with Trotter? Loafers?

I hope you're not referring to the ingestion of illegal substances old boy.

I've heard he's back in town.

& thanks for clearing up it for me, though I still don't remember 'love machine', 'overture' or 'waldo roderick'.

The mind is a strange thing. I obviously had a miracles filtering device surreptitiously installed in my frontal lobe.

Hi Steve,

The crack was certainly better at Yate - provided you made it inside.

I remember the night you drunk a bottle of Bacardi (mixed with orange squash - all there was at my mum's). When we came out in the morning you said "I ain't coming here again, I fell asleep in the car park and some bastard puked on me". PMSL

Hope everything's good with you.

Best

Mickey

Jimmy McFarland-Lonely Lover? A Wigan anthem? I dont think so. I was there when it was first played and it emptied the dance floor. The few who danced were from the WM who knew it. That disc was ahead of its time for wigwam.

i remember tony basel-breakaway being very big, was this a "no.1"?

i also remember the ohio players-love slipped through my fingers being played for the first time- blew me away. was i the only person in the late 70's who absolutely loved mike patto-cant stop talkin' 'bout my baby? "its waiting there for you" seems to be a track people on here would rather forget?

wasnt there another version of gwen owens-lies? also a female backing???

"find a quiet place"

"when your lonesome"

"tear stained face"

"mean it baby"

:)

Thank you for the complement NS101, did get a few out of the record bar onto the dance floor to stretch their legs. ........so was Sam Williams Love Slipped Through My Fingers ahead of its time, but like Jimmy Macfarlene after a few saturday nite spins was respected. :) .

maybe..I'd not been to wigan in a while..so upon my return pushed the boat out & got off my box..heard tim tam, thought it was fantastic, bought it that night, got home, played it & resold it straightaway, a lot of records sounded great whilst at Wigan, less so elsewhere.

Went right to the end of this thread, sorry! (so, if my thoughts have already been mentioned, ah, who really cares)

What about:

Gene Latter - Groove it - (Huge for about 2 weeks)

Johnny Jones & The King Casuals - Purple Haze (Top tune)

Skip Mahoney - Janice (Don't Be Blind To Love) - (Huge, but crap)

Larry Brown - Breaking Training - (Shite, but big)

Eddie Holman - I Surrender - (Serious soul)

Kenni Burke - Let Somebody Love You - (First serious crossover?)

So many others, but that was then, and this is now, right?

we absolutely loved ral doner - "dont let it slip" away, in scotland! and nightwatch- "lips to your heart" stop disrespecting the records we used to love or still do!

I still like the Nightwatch also (Long Long way - 'The Elingtons' was the cover IIRC)

Interesting thread TBH as some of the 'great' tracks listed above had me heading for M's..

A perfect example of 'each to his own' me thinks
