Some acts who were on while I was there but I didn't necessarily watch them were Martha & The Vandellas, The Marvelettes, Archie Bell & The Drells, Junior Walker (he was fantastic), Linda & The Funky Boys (!!! remember them?), The Chants (at the 3rd anniversary), can't remember any more but there definitely were more - this was the only time I ever went in M's, to keep the buzz going while the live acts were on

Seem to recall seeing Edwin Starr there, not sure whether 1974 or 1975.

never took much notice, used to go outside or into m,s...they never sounded owt like the records and personally was glad when we got back to the vinyl..(thats my view, most people will disagree no doubt) ...oh and the only act that sounded like a record playing to me were the detroit emeralds.

Never keen on the live acts myself as I felt they spoiled the flow but Detroit Emeralds were superb.

Tommy Hunt used to do my head in - always turning up on a 'normal' night.....Russ used to stop the music and announce 'Hey everybody, look who's come to see us' - Tommy Hunt would walk on stage to take a bow followed by rounds of applause etc etc whilst I paced up and down waiting for records to come back on  AAaaarghhh

Edwin Starr appeared a couple of times, I've got a tape of one of the nights somewhere, both Edwin and Searling's spot that night. As I recall Edwin was better the second time, first time a bit phased when someone near the front of the stage asked for Accident, backing band didn't have a clue. Got a tape of Jr Walker at Wigan too, must look those out.

On the whole I'm not a fan of live acts other than to show appreciation for the history, but I think both Edwin Starr and Jr Walker gave a good account of themselves. I remember running accross the stage at the end of Jr Walker to get the sleeve of a Roadrunner SOUL promo signed (still got that), he showed a real enthusiastic interest in the promo copy (not that hard I know) wanting to know where I'd got it from.

Just been looking through a few old diaries (how sad is that?) and came up with a few dates for acts I went to see at the Casino:

Edwin Starr Sun 8th December 1974

Jackie Wilson Sun 15th June 1975

Exciters Sun 31st August 1975

Seem to remember seeing Tommy Hunt but don't have a record of when.

Another date that I didn't attend was:

Martha Reeves Sun 12th February 1978.

According to Dave Shaw's 'Casino' book there were loads of acts that appeared at the Casino including:R.Dean Taylor, The Elgins, Junior Walker, The Marvelettes, Major Lance, Detroit Emeralds, Archie Bell & the Drells, Gloria Jones and Betty Wright.

And Tony fecking Blackburn wacko.gif ..........im sure no one really gave a shit about the live acts, I know I didnt watch one of them, I was there for the music, the friendships and (at that point in my life) the....... :) drugs

Alldayers were a totally different animal, live acts were a must.....mainly because we had been on our feet for a day or two solid so the rest from dancing was welcome  ....the best of which were Jnr Walker Major Lance and The Real Thing IMO.

Got a vague recollection that JJ Barnes performed at Wigan about late 76/early 77 - memories are a bit addled  .

Loved Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes at Stafford ('83?), seem to recall that the young(ish) lead singer (post Teddy Pendergrass) was something special.

Not sad at all mate, often trawl through mine to recharge the old memory cells & never surprised about what info I would write, I saw Martha Reeves at the Casino as well......she sang 'One Way Out' with no backing as the band didn't know it.....there was also a support, Detroit Emeralds? (maybe) they did some Jackson covers as I seem to remember, we went to see Martha Reeves a week later in Poole & she got one of our girls up on the stage to dance with her.

sure the velvelettes were on in the late seventies ,it used to be an extra 50p or £1.00 when live act was on [which most poeple dint care for, an they shut mr ms down while acts were performing luckily velvelettes did 3 songs and recieved raptuous applause when announcing their final song not sure if they were the original members i was only a kid sixteenish

My first ever visit to Wigan was for Gloria Jones - great night.

Spent some of it in a backstage party and could have sworn Marc Bolan was there!!!!

Also seem to remember Tavares???

A bit of topic but - didn't you give me a lift back to Chelt after Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes at Stafford?

I'm pretty sure I saw them too, I don't think any of them were the original members and I seem to think a lot of gold spandex was involved, maybe where my Sylvester confusion comes from.

Yep...piss poor performance...I felt a bit sorry for her to be honest...I had a lousy night too and she was the last straw...went even more downhill after that...was glad to get home on the Sunday

Trouble is it's such a long time ago that I have great difficulty in remembering where I actually went and when. Do know that I went to Yate on the night Martha Reeves was at the Casino which, in hindsight, was a big mistake.

Feel lucky to have seen Jackie Wilson just before he had his stroke in '75.

Hiya

Very likely - saw Harold Melvin and his Blue notes about three times for some reason (Essex, London and Stafford although I had forgotten that one!)

Really soulful stuff - even if it was a bit cabaret.

See you at the party ...

Billy,

didn't you perform on stage as part of the dancing competition? Heard you thought that everyone was cheering you on then you realised your belt had broke and your trousers were falling down

I always thought live acts broke up the allnighter so I didn't go much on them. I remember Tommy Hunt, the Exciters twice, Detroit Emeralds, Jnr Walker. at the 'nighters although I went into Ms to get away from it. I did go to one of the early Saturday sessions once to see Arthur Conley & got back to verbal all over him in his dressing room.

Judging by the autograph it must have been 1975, but I can't find a reference in any B&S. I'll have to check for '74. Who remembers the Burnley Cats Whiskers alldayers. I'm sure 100% pure poison were on once, but I was in the middle of a severe cracking up session :P , and everyone in Burnley was after me  , so I did a runner biggrin.gif . Happy memories :P . I did see the "The Javells" at the casino, but it was a Wednesday or Friday night early session.

Bettye Wright was a total sell out with a couple of hundred locked out, I was second to last one through door, just managed to drag get my misses in, a lot of my mates didn't make it and only got in hours later.

No one mentioned Doris Jones, James Wells and Barbara Pennington.

Used to catch all the Casino acts in North Wales on a Wednesday evening prior to the appearance at the Casino on the Saturday.
