Guest Ste Brazil Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Rising Sun - Good Loving - Kingston https://www.raresoulman.co.uk/auction/all-auction ...'One night affair' or is it just me..?! Ste.
Garethx Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 The Rising Sun did a version of Gamble & Huff's One Night Affair on the Suncut label. It utilises pretty much the same backing track as the Good Lovin' track currently for auction (in fact Good Lovin' is an answer song to their version of One Night Affair: the current biggie is a bit punchier for the dancefloor). The Suncut 45 is much, much cheaper than the Kingston 45 and is well worth picking up. Their other 45s on Kingston (Let Me Into Your Heart, Gettin' Is Kinda Cool Now) are worthy of a listen as well. All good Miami soul featuring the great vocals of Simeon Taylor.

Garethx Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 For the Suncut 45 I'd say £40-50 for a mint copy. For the Kingston 45 who knows? Demand is pretty big at the moment and it will be interesting to see what it makes in John's auction.
Rick Scott Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 What is the going rate? Ste. Would be interested to know how much this goes for through Manship, Was a big spin for me back in the days of the Canal Tavern Modern nites at Thorne, Bought mine off Garry Smelt (Black Knight Records) probably for £8 (must check out his lists as i kept them all) Must say took a long time for it to catch on like a lot of others from those days so no change there then as they say, even Sam can be behind the times lol

I have one with it Don't Concern Us on one side and Funky Yolk on the other, but that is definitely the Rising Sun, its quite a different record, almost spoken word. Can't do sound clips but hopefully will try before weekend. I also have the LMIYH and, as always, Gareth good tip, forgot all about having that one

I was going to say that my experience was that the Suncut 45 was just as common or uncommon as the Kingston 45. I should have also stated that I think Rising Sun were an outgrowth of Arnold Albury & The Casuals. If memory serves The Casuals released Funky Yolk on Dade, did they not?

It is an outgrowth of arnold albury and the casuals but the funky yolk is not the same version and it's not exactly the same group (my friend found the info via his deep city / clarence reid stuff where he comped the material). He sent me a cool photo that is actually a COVER OF SHEET MUSIC for "getting is kind of cool now", I will post it later. Crazy that sheet music for that song exists.
Garethx Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 (edited) Wow... I look forward to seeing that Bob. I have three AA & The Casuals 45s on Dade now but don't have the Rising Sun version of Funky Yolk, so incorrectly assumed they were the same cut. My favourite Arnold Albury & The Casuals track is the sublime My Baby Don't Understand (which came out on two of the Dade 45s): a beautiful, summery, midtempo group sound. I agree with you, I played the "my baby" cut on one of my anniversary radio shows. Will post the photo when I get home.

boba Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 I saw that one as well, but didn't bid. It was on the TOE label. Check the scans below: I was the second bidder. I blow enough money on crappy records already because they are "interesting".
Guest Ste Brazil Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 I was the second bidder. I blow enough money on crappy records already because they are "interesting". I buy 'interesting' records too, the most 'interesting' is the alternative version to J.J.Cailler's 'Pusherman', a 1980 rap version by the man himself - Interesting but crap! Ste.
Tolbert Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I have a whole box of "interessting" records...

Bought it actually for the flip. Funky Yolk is known, but the flip... If it's crap I still have Funky Yolk Anybody who knows something about the obscure label "TOC"?? Sebastian, normally u have an answer Edited September 25, 2008 by JohnnyHitman
Sebastian Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Anybody who knows something about the obscure label "TOC"?? Sebastian, normally u have an answer Sorry, no not off the top of my head. Do you have any other info? Artists that have 45s on the label etc.?
Guest Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 I saw that one as well, but didn't bid. It was on the TOE label. Check the scans below: I've got this 45 somewhere, but it doesn't have Rising Sun on the flip but another track by Six Toe. Will try and find it later as it's been a long time since I had the 45 out. Possibly it had vocal/instrumental versions of the Six Toe track. Seem to remember it being a deep funk record....

If it's crap I still have Funky Yolk Anybody who knows something about the obscure label "TOC"?? Sebastian, normally u have an answer My guess is that the 'Toe' label is some kind of bootleg: two completely unconnected records back to back (the credits on the Six Toe side suggest Detroit and Atlanta connections). I couldn't speculate when it was made or which market it would have been aimed at.
Harrogatesoul Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Sorry, no not off the top of my head. Do you have any other info? Artists that have 45s on the label etc.? T.O.C Band - Hand It Over (TOC) One and only one I've seen on the label. Good tune - Might have a soundfile somewhere. Rich
Garethx Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Hi Rich this label is TOE rather than TOC.

Guest JohnnyHitman Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 (edited) Hi Rich this label is TOE rather than TOC. Mhh now that u said it I can see it myself. Could be an e at the end and not a c. Doesn't look like a bootleg but who knows. The seller has an excellent reputation, buy from him since years! Seems to be unknown so far. Can't find any info about the band, either!! Common Sebastian, normally you have something for us!? The only infos are on the label, that's it! Edited September 26, 2008 by JohnnyHitman

Well, I know somebody in Scandinavia who until very recently had three copies of the Suncut 45 Marc NB Awesome photo sheet !

The only infos are on the label, that's it! Well seeing as the band is called Six Toe and the logotype has an 'e' rather than a 'c' I think it's definitely the Toe label. I'm pretty convinced this is a boot: a rare boot maybe, but a boot nonetheless. Maybe one for the Dutch collectors of southern soul in the 1970s? Pure speculation on the latter point: I would be interested to know what genre the other side is in. Edited September 26, 2008 by garethx

Pure speculation on the latter point: I would be interested to know what genre the other side is in. it seems strange as a boot just because the label looks to be from about the same time that the rising sun actually came out. to the winner of this -- you could have gotten this for less as a much more common 'legit' release on kingston with another rising sun cut on the flip, then left this to me as a cheap oddity. We both lost out here.
Guest carl_p Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 I saw that one as well, but didn't bid. It was on the TOE label. Check the scans below: It was my record. I've seen it around for years but never liked the six toe side so i never bothered with it. but playing the funky yolk side i can see the appeal. Always thought it had something to do with the earl english 45 on six toe since i found them both about 20+ years ago. i may have even gotten them together in the same lot or something. the six toe side sounded almost slow country to me but it's been a number of years since i played it. i always liked the earl english record though.
