Guest angf Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Gordon Covey in Fort William is promoting the only Scottish date on the Wigan Casino 35th Anniversary Tour on Sat, Oct 18, in Fort William's Nevis Centre with DJs Russ Winstanley, Alan King and Steve Whittle. £15, 7pm-1.30am. Full details are available, together with ticket information, by clicking here . Gordon is also running a soul night every Wednesday in the BA Club, Fort William, fom 8pm till midnight - admission £3. We were discussing this on Paul Clarke's Soul City Radio Show on Sunday (Leith FM 98.8) as it has just suddenly popped up and no one seems to have heard about it up here North of the Border (which is unusual). It is quite outwith the "central belt" area and it does not seem to have been heavily promoted up here in Scotland so do not how well attended it will be with the Scottish Soulies - perhaps it has been promoted down South though? Anyone going or aware of it?
Guest Roddy Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Gordon lived in Edinburgh years ago attended edinburgh ym clouds etc mid to late seventies then disapeared of the radar. it seams just like another crass attempt to cash in on the poularity of the Casino from back in the day. I have heard the venue is good but to fill it it would need around 15 full buses from all over Scotlland in this day and age I cant see that happening. Please please please let the memory of the Casino rest in peace.
Haydn Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 I used to work in Fort William and there was little Soul action there unless I took a few tunes down to Gregory's. The local DJ would play them for me while onlookers watched me doin kicks an spins to Johnny Wyatt.( on my own)lol. That was about 1985. Full of bikers and Ceilidh's. Poor promotion, Clutching at straws springs to mind. H
Little-stevie Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 £15 for a ticket from 7.30 to 1.30am ... Like the song says. Cashin in
Steve G Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 (edited) But why would you cash in there - unless to make a tax loss? :phoar: I mean it's one of the remotest places in the UK isn't it. Full of bikers and Bagpipe nights.....Is there a colony of ex Casino-goers living on the Highland Islands or sumething? We should be told, as on it's face this is the most ridiculous location for an event. Edited September 24, 2008 by Steve G
Guest angf Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 In my humble opinion I agree. It is far too remote and has not been well promoted at all. The last I looked it was not even in the events diary on this site. They must have done their homework though and perhaps there is a colony of ex-casino-goers in their catchment area - LOL. The general consensus is that it is yet another businessman trying to cash in and make a quick buck, I mean £15 quid a ticket for a soul night?
Guest 2648 W Grand Boulevard Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 I lived in Fort William from 1967 until I left aged 17 in 1976, trust me there aint no soul in any shoes up there. The tourist season is effectively over in October so the promoter is kinda out of touch. The locals would think that Wigan Casino was some upmarket gambling arena, mind you going for a p**s in the Casino toilets was a gamble in itself !! It would be interesting to go and show some of my former schoolmates just what sounds they missed by not leaving the Fort but I feel that the records played would not cover the wide, varied and interesting spectrum that is Soul music. I would be interested to hear what happened. Soul in Fort William, I never thought I'd live to see the day or indeed the two words together Dave
Guest ben Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Soul in the Highlands?....there are a few of us There is a fella called Dave originally from Birstall , Leicester who lives 2 miles down the road from me in Forres (which is bizare as i'm a mountsorrel boy) and another Dave this time from Manchester who used to DJ, but is now a preacher in Dingwall! There must be more hiding away, but perhaps not enough for a regular night and perhaps not on a Saturday if Dingwall Dave needs to work on Sundays . Fort William, nah i'll still be recovering from Aberdeen Nighter on the 4th October to consider attending, if someone fancies organising a Highland weekender though ...

Catch your great show on Listen Again every week.Going to be a full house of 1500 Soul Fans awaiting you at Fort William on October 18th.Massive thanks for you,Steve and Alan for making the long trip.Country Girl or Angel Baby please. KTF. Well according to the above article and comment there is going to be a "full house of 1500 Soul Fans" at this one - well done to the promoters for selling such a large volume of tickets for an event which has gone seemingly unheard of in Scotland I still have not heard of anyone going - has anyone?

My second guess........It's a virtual event in Virtual world. Go to the Second Life website and you can buy tickets at 35 Linden dollars. There will be 1500 virtual soulies there, virtually dancing, to virtually Vickie Baines.
Jill Bayles Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Agree just a money-making racket/gimmick that hopefully isn't likely to make much money...where these people get their ideas from I'll never know...and I thought my head was cabbaged ..oh and not forgetting that it's impossible to celebrate the 35th anniversary of a club that is no more and has not been for many a long year...let it go and move on ffs...it aint never rising from the ashes and I for one wouldn't want it to
Steve G Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 (edited) Shute I have just unwittingly realised that I have given Stef and Russ a new marketing opportunity......Wigan Casino Virtual anniversary. I mean who needs a shopping centre when you can have your event in second life with a real life "Virtual Wigan Casino". Drat! Edited October 8, 2008 by Steve G
Guest mickeyb Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Will virtual gear be available? (Only to 5% of the punters, of course.)

Guest KEN-SOUL Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 the amigo's are going.....can't wait its a shame that this was not promoted properly... as for a "casino colony" all over scotland... this is correct, and were proud of it!

Surprisingly enough this event has been CANCELLED...................no doubt the 1500 Soul Fans who hold tickets will be disappointed! Never mind I have heard you can use the tickets again at the other events on this tour i.e. (as previously quoted): Its only the first stop for this road show - they are going on to the "Outer Hebredies" and then on to "Iceland" (where the tickets are going to be cheaper!) I can imagine Duncan Ballatyne on Dragons Den "Who gave you the rights? It's well worth clicking on the link above to see how many howlers can be spotted e g quote "In 1978 Billboard magazine gave the Casino the accolade "The Heart of Soul" over Studio 54". There are at least 10 more !
