Thought might be of interest to other freaks like me. https://electronics.howstuffworks.com/question487.htm Brett link Theres more to it as well, on normal CD the frequency spectrum is rolled off at 20-22.5kHz which is the peak sound that most people can hear (gets lower when you get older) but what that fails to recognise is that people can also perceive sound outside that frequency range (both up and down) and that the presence of those frequencies leads to a different perception of the music being played (although on systems most people use the difference won't be that obvious). I won't put up the link on super frequency perception though, its too geeky by half and has algebra in it. No idea what it was on about. New CD formats have accepted this and include the broader frequency range. Ultimately CD was a great big bloody rip off as it wasn't fully developed when it was bought to market. Yet another almight con on the general public by the faceless corporations who got to resell their back catalogue on a new format. DAT recorder anyone? What next? Oh, digital broadcasting of course. Same problems. As to this bit: "But there is a downside, any specks of dust or damage to the disc can be heard as noise or static. During quiet spots in songs this noise may be heard over the music. Digital recordings don't degrade over time, and if the digital recording contains silence, then there will be no noise" Clean the bloody record. Get an anti-static gun if you're having that much of a problem with static (does anyone?). As for digital recordings not deteriorating, cobblers, a lot of early CDs have now become tarnished, although they are still playable, and nobody has established what CDs actual longevity might be.
