Yes I was there for a few years when I was 19, then later in my 20's. Shared a flat with Margaret first time then Liz Ryan who married Tony Cox in '81 when I went off travelling. Also Gill Hickson, Sally Halliday, Tony Monaghan. And the more naughty ones like Los (Dave Lonsdale), Mo and Chris McGrain. Link to comment Social source share

I was living in Burscough, but originally from Southport. Used to knock about with Loz, Gozzy, Mel, Pete Simpson etc, and also knew Dave Hazeldon, John Powell & Herman. Gill Hicksons dad was the Boys Brigade leader in Marshside, when I was in the BB as a far younger kid . remember she used to go out with Herman around 1975 when they used to go to the Mecca. I bottled out & joined the Navy in 76, closely followed by Dave & then Herman. When you say Hermans( partner ), does that mean he is batting for the other side so to speak? if so, that's submariners for you . I got a load of DVDs of all the TV footage like This England etc. & Tony Cox was one of the only people I recognise from it. He is shown going into the Casino, he went out with Julie Marshall for a long time, she eventually married Garry Rushbrook I think. She was one of the people I met on one of my rare returns to the allnighter scene at Stafford in 84 for the Gene Chandler night. Also had a good chat to Pete Lawson then. The last time I saw him. I don't know if you remember me, but some of those people mentioned will, I'm Paul Rimmer, or you may remember my sister Christine Rimmer. Do you remember Tony Monaghan? I think he is probably living down South too ( )I don't know why I never realised that at the time. I spoke to Liz , (who married Tony Cox) and I know he died. When you see John Powell, tell him I see Fiona and Andy Nevin alot, I know he was a friend of theirs. Andy can also be seen at the door going in on the This England clips. I also used to go to The Scarsbrick Hotel which was more Funk. But Tiffanies was good on a Sunday night after a litre of Bulls Blood wine at the wine bar! So who runs the soul nights now? The photos of the weekender, the largest percentage of the soulies in Oz - the Northern die-hards that is, are ex-pats. We had lots from interstate at our weekender, we see each other quite a bit and wander around to various soul nights and weekends. Just huge distances to travel! There are some Aussies and my husband is Austrian, he is a complete convert. There are some Australian Mods and scooter boys who come along to our local nights. Although some of them are also ex-pats. I'll post some photos from this year's weekender. Link to comment Social source share

Paul I have a vague recollection of you, but I can remember Christine more. Gill and I went off travelling to Holland and then Greece, I went back to Holland and haven't seen her since. She was going out with Herman when we went to Wigan. Loz had lost the plot for a while, but when I went back to Southport the last time, he was doing well, married and had a good job. I hear from Mel quite a bit through Facebook etc. I'll have to mention you to him. Does anyone remember Malcolm Hegarty? Link to comment Social source share

I remember him from Wigan & Mecca. Did someone say Tony Cox died? Paul Yes, sadly, Tony committed suicide, I don't know the full story, but Liz told me when I spoke to her on the phone when I was home in Jan. I think quite a while ago. It would be great to hear from Malcolm, we set him up on a date with our boss where we worked at the time, (she was about the same age as us) and she ended up coming to Wigan with us. Not a good idea, once we got in tow with Kev O'Brien. There was another guy from Burscough who used to meet up with us on the train who was a friend of Malcs. Malc was quite friendly with Richard Searling and we used to go on a Monday night to Wigan and "hang out' on the stage. Did your sister used to go out with that guy Roy? Sad to hear about Tony, he was a really nice guy. MY sister didn't go out with Roy. If it's Roy Gostello you mean, he really lost the plot apparently, but he married? Margaret from Wrexham. I don't know what happened to them. As for loosing the plot, that's why after 3 years of overindulgence of the fast things in life, I decided to join the navy. I did go back to Wigan a few times, but I had been busted just before I joined, and my summons didn't turn up until I was in the navy & nearly got Kicked out. It took a lot of waffleing to convince them that it was a one off and I had been a good boy since . I did do a bit of DJing round the Plymouth area in the Late 70s/early 80s, but didn't regularly do any 'nighters. Paul Link to comment Social source share

The other one from that crowd was Mo Hazeldon, Mel told me he died as well. At one point Loz and Mo had completely lost the plot together, they were a shady looking twosome! So you did well escaping to the Navy. Australia has alot of escapees I remember seeing Dave Hazeldon in his Navy uniform, but not Herman. There was also a guy called Gareth Evans? He was a scream. He hitched a lift up to Scotland for New Years Eve once, in the snow and made it in time for the parties(all week) Good memories of Southport, I loved it there.
