Guest SteveJohnston Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I'm just struggling with the Scottish flag bit - my spot at Wigan, under the staircase on the right hand side put me right underneath where it was hung, so I'm opting out now, I've put my two penneth in and I'll leave it to the real investigators. Barry your spot on with the placing of the banner SO you should know how it got took down?
Soul Shrews Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Sorry Paul, I wasn't paying enough attention... :-) No probs macca ............................now go to the back of the class and write out 1000 times "I must pay attention" Cheeers Paul

Holy Schmoly - We have to decipher what The Riddler says Robin Saying it was a Scotish flag is nearly right it was a tartan sheet with white lettering hung fron the balcony on the right as you looked at the stage, That is how it got riped down . The balcony at the Casino ran over the stage by about four or five feet as anyone that went knows, someone standing on the stage removed the banner as you would not have reached from the dance floor so if the banner had been any other place but near the stage it would of been up a lot longer that the twenty minutes or so it was there. Shouts of support for & against the banner went up from the dance floor in just about equal numbers. But i for one don't think it got Sam the bullet from the Casino more like the earache Russ was getting from a lot of 60's fans about the modern tracks Sam was playing and Russ himself had played one or two at the time so the banner was probable not just directed at Sam Steve J Edited September 21, 2008 by SteveJohnston

(blue & white) - unless Spurs had a tartan away kit that is. Now I maybe wrong but as my memory serves me - the flag/banner was a blue backround with a white x/cross on it (in my memory that is) with the lettering over the top. Am I wrong? Edited September 21, 2008 by Barry
Barry Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 And as for the positioning of the banner, in my memory it was at least 8-10 feet away from a position where anyone from the stage could have removed it - fair do's I could have fecked off to M's and in the meantime you/whoever could have shuffled it along, nearer the stage, whereby said person could have been in a position to drag it down....Christ, I feel like Columbo.....this version of vents don't ring true, for my recollections anyway. Apologies if I'm wrong, and I could be - I'm man enough to accept it.
Barry Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 so the banner was probable not just directed at Sam Hadn't we substantiated that it couldn't have been aimed at Sam? Do you know who placed the banner? If so, everything I remember, which one person has substantiated, is bobbins - as your version of events must be true. It could have been one of me 'Sodies' nights given and if I'm wrong, I'm wrong - but pleeeease tell me the truth.
Guest nomad Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Vaguely remember this Petr99 but only vaguely sorry dont know dates or 'out Rememeber my old mate Pip Smith making badges for us 'modern" fans from Shrewsbury to wear one weekend One read "Ian Levine Was Just Too Darn Soulful"............................mine read "Jazz Funk For Mr Ms" !!! I knew Pip...he often wore a smart suit to Wigan. The Wolverhampton crowed had badges with 'Join the anti Criss King League' on them so I seem to recall He had something to do with the hate of all things seventies. I know The Stokies were anti modern at the time and I found it quite funny selling the likes of Geoff and Atlas copies of Charles Johnson,Phillip Mitchel etc. Strange world!!
Peter99 Posted September 22, 2008 Author Posted September 22, 2008 Right - just to recap. Was the banner aimed at Sam? It may or may not have been entirely aimed at Sam - however, I think we agree that this was Sam's last night - me and my mate Mick Bradbury did the petition - fact. Did the banner get Sam the sack? Probably not - I think his fate was already sealed. The banner did stoke up quite a bit of emotion though and didn't help. Was it 1981 or 1980? My investigation has been unable to be specific about the year - cos everyone's memory is fooked. I think 1981 - but others have a different view. Was it the scottish lads? Definitely no - I have ruled them out. Fact. Were the lads from Stoke the guilty fookers? No - they are definitely innocent, this time anyway. What I can tell you is the guilty parties are from the North West and I have discovered that the said "banner" was home made. It does have a scottish connection. I have had some pm's telling to keep away from this piece of history. Allegedly, there are five people who know - and it's been kept a secret for many years. I will get to the bottom of it. Ironside

Barry Yes your right it was blue and white, it was different shades of blue and white tartan with white lettering, I don't know where Pete99 is geting the PM's from but he is getting a bit to close for comfort for me! I can tell you he is right saying it was a North West crew, that fully belived that some of the Casino main hall DJ's where starting to play to much modern and yes i know all the names but untill i have a chance to talk to one or two of them Steve J
Steve G Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Sam was sacked from Wigan at the beginning of 81 I think. If he wrote about it in the March 81 issue of Blackbeat, he would have written those words in mid February 1981 (it took nearly a month to get it printed those days). And it would have been a talking point of the few weeks before then (i.e a recent development). Still waiting to see his letter to Black Echoes, which he says sealed his fate along with a totally 70s playlist, and of course the bloody petition.

Someone also said won't say anything for legal reasons? Is it any different really to voicing your opinions on an internet forum in this day and age????? There's been far worse said on here about some DJ's and venues, including Sam.

Not saying anything yet but I will once I'm sure. I've also been told to fcuk off and leave it alone - bloody hell it was nearly 30 years ago. Silly threats don't bother me. Ironside

Steve G Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 I'm not sure what you mean about the petition Steve? You want to see it? I don't think Sam would have kept it? There was a petition to try and get him OFF Peter. Not one to reinstate him - that was seperate.

Prophonics 2029 Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 I am wondering if Sam was really sacked for playing 80ts sounds or for some other reason (the mate who uncovered an RS spin) I still cant think of a bad record but that Sound & Light orch sounds a bit strained now something Shadows.

Steve G Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 So has the scent gone cold then? Sam reckoned at the time that he was sacked for playing totally 70s and his letter to Black Echoes (as yet unre-printed). He would of course know as presumably he'd have been called in to an office at the Casino to see Russ for a "chat" and to have the reasoning explained. Sounds like the banner and the petitions are red herrings, though they may have added fuel to the fire.

The banner didn't really have much, if anything to do with it.

Did he do the hiring and firing? Could you imagine Sam arguing with him about the ins and outs of rare soul 70s and 60s drying up? I thought Harry Green was more interested in race horses?
Barry Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Yes your right it was blue and white, it was different shades of blue and white tartan with white lettering THAT! Is by far the funniest reply I have read on this forum . I have at one point in this whole sorry (but funny, I'm laughing here, not moaning) thread asked if anyone was actually reading anything that I wrote about this subject, as the conversations seemed to go on disregarding the information I had quoted on many separate occassions. Said in a Father Dougal accent: "Ted - I'm goin' mad!" IT WAS A FUCKING SCOTTISH FLAG - not part tartan, lemon, turquoise or magenta - just a scottish flag. I don't know if they liked kilns or knives or clogs or whatever. Could the quiet majority please pipe up and settle my mind? My main career in life was as a Psychiatric Assessment Officer - after this task of a thread I now know how the lads I assessed felt. Anyway, this a thread to be cherished, I thank you all for your input. I'll speak to Richard about this and square it up once and for all. (Btw does Sam still live in that small Welsh town? His phone number in the late 80's was summat like Builth Wells 593 - a three digit phone number???) The strange world of Welsh teachers.
Barry Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Steve, don't take my post the wrong way mate - I do find the whole thread a work of genius and in no way do I see you in any other way than a passionate Soulie, there should be more threads like this. (I will take payments not to get involved btw)
Peter99 Posted September 24, 2008 Author Posted September 24, 2008 Right - this thread was simply about trying to find out who actually hung the fookin banner - nothing else really. I did not suggest that the banner was responsible for Sam's sacking - I did say it may well have fanned the flames of animosity in some quarters. So. I now have old addresses in the Manchester area. I know where the "banner" was made - I even know who made it. There was a group of four or five individuals involved. I have two names. One of them has admitted it - the other one is being contacted this morning. There are three others. I will post up the two names this afternoon - I'm in meetings most of the day. At least two of em are members on here. Ironside.
Guest Roddy Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Were they also involved in stealing the stone of destiny from westminster abbey as this was also wrapped up in a blue and white tartan shawl !
Guest SteveJohnston Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Have found an old Blackbeat dated March 1981 in which Sam talks of his sacking from Wigan "for playing totally 70s and explaining my position in a letter to Black Echoes". The pieces are starting to fall into place. I have found Sam's letter in No 324 Feb 24- March 9 1981, i will try and get it onto my PC so i can post it later, So it would put the date of Sam leaving the casino at very early 81 for them that are intrested! Steve J
