Peter99 Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) Right had a bit of a chat about this on Simons Cassanova thread............... It's circa 1980 - Wigan casino. Modern Soul is taking a real foothold - Messrs Searling, Sam etc. There was a growing backlash from the die hards who hated all things modern which resulted in Soul Sam receiving his marching orders from the casino. So, do you remember the night when the banner "Keep the Faith not the Funk" was hung from the balcony? Were you there? Did you see any suspicious fookers prowling round the balcony, lurking in the darkness with intent? Did you hear any whispers on the grapevine? Just who did hang that fookin banner? If you do know anything you can post up here or pm Ironside99 in complete confidence. Edited September 19, 2008 by Peter99

Peter99 Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 There is a Stoke connection Peter. I thought it said "Keep the faith F*ck the Funk" Mm. Very interesting Steve. I assume you were there and saw it? I can't remember the exact year - was it 1980 or 81? Right - gonna go and check out the fookin Stoke connection!
Peter99 Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 Goin undercover for a while - I've had a few pms from some very, very odd and shady characters.

A guy I used to knock about with once confessed something very similar to me ... namely he'd hung a banner over the balcony facing the stage with Searling must go written on it, I believe it was about that period in time aswell ...he told me it was a protest at the amount of newer stuff being played at the time .. not sure if this is the same event but sounds mighty similar to me .. or was this type of thing common place in those days
Steve G Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Have found an old Blackbeat dated March 1981 in which Sam talks of his sacking from Wigan "for playing totally 70s and explaining my position in a letter to Black Echoes". The pieces are starting to fall into place.
Soul Shrews Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Vaguely remember this Petr99 but only vaguely sorry dont know dates or 'out Rememeber my old mate Pip Smith making badges for us 'modern" fans from Shrewsbury to wear one weekend One read "Ian Levine Was Just Too Darn Soulful"............................mine read "Jazz Funk For Mr Ms" !!! Happy days..................cheers Paul
macca Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 the levine campaign was much earlier, 1977, I'd say... I don't remember a searling campaign, & I was much more tuned to moses dillard than larry atkins back then. are we going to see some cap in hand apologies then? :-) M
Soul Shrews Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 macca, the badge read " I L was just too darn soulful" meant as a nod to the 1st "modern revolution" @ t'Mecca Cheers "cap on head not in hand" Paul

Guest SteveJohnston Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) There is a Stoke connection Peter. I thought it said "Keep the faith F*ck the Funk" "Keep the Faith not the Funk" that's what the banner said i remember it like it was yesterday, and it was instigated north of Stoke & thats all i'm saying for now! Mind you Pete S may be right saying a reward should have been given Steve J Edited September 19, 2008 by SteveJohnston

Anyone that was there will know whearebouts on the balcony the banner was hung how long it was up there, the time of night it was done and most important in this matter the Fookers that did it, So come on no need to be shy Pete somthing thats puzzled me about your investigation i can never remember any tents on the balcony ...........on second thoughts yes i can but not the kind you sleep in Steve J Edited September 19, 2008 by SteveJohnston
Barry Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I've just placed a post on the 'Casanova' thread about the particular night this banner was hurled over the balcony - the banner was basically a Scottish flag with lettering stitched over it. So start with the Scots lads.

We can moan about the Scots for a lot of things, but I am not so sure we can lay this one at their door.
Barry Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 We can moan about the Scots for a lot of things, but I am not so sure we can lay this one at their door. Aaaaaah, so the Scottish flag was just there to throw us off the scent that night then was it Steve? Got ya!!
Steve G Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Aaaaaah, so the Scottish flag was just there to throw us off the scent that night then was it Steve? Got ya!! Just didn't think the Scots were in the Stomper club. Maybe some of them on here can shed some light then
Guest Una Scot-Oz Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Just didn't think the Scots were in the Stomper club. Maybe some of them on here can shed some light then I was in the stomper club! But living in Southport at that time so that gets me out of it. The Dundee ones were most dodgy out of the Scots crowd

The pieces are starting to fall into place. So it looks lke it was 1981 then - I thought it was a bit later than 1980. Had some very interesting pms. A certain northern industrial city has been named by three seperate people.

I 've a few strong leads that I'm following up. Old Ironside is confident of nailing these fookers - it's just gonna take a little time.

Peter99 Posted September 20, 2008 Author Posted September 20, 2008 sorry i place the date at may /june 1980 as sam wasnt on in 1981 wasnt the naughty crew from wolvo/telford You could be right mate - I can't remember the actual year. My information to date is taking me north of the midlands. The truth is always out there - I'm gonna nail the fookers.
Barry Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 As I said earlier, I always had it in my mind that the banner was aimed at Richard not Sam as it, in my mind, was thrown over the balcony just before Richard came on. I remember it to be '81, which if it was, would prove it.
Barry Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Have I read this thread correctly or am I just going off on one?
Guest inspirations001 Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 it deffo wasn't the scots,it was more than likely from the potteries, not naming names but i do know em. members of the gary rushbrooke appreciation society(not him directly) and the guys who went to stafford. maybe it was russ who hung the banner, his spots were woeful by this time. remember his awful barnaby bye c/u "you sent my temp rising"?? his atempt at MODERN soul he was on radio recently playing buster jones like it was a new fooking record! not the telford crew cos they were into the modern stuff too. ironic really the folks who knocked wil collins, velvet hammer, king tutt etc, probably dance to em now.clock, faces, more, town ,than ,hall,a. rearange!!

Guest inspirations001 Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 so do YOU know who hung the banner! me thinks it came from the pottewries!
Peter99 Posted September 20, 2008 Author Posted September 20, 2008 As I said earlier, I always had it in my mind that the banner was aimed at Richard not Sam as it, in my mind, was thrown over the balcony just before Richard came on. I remember it to be '81, which if it was, would prove it. I'm as certain as my memory will allow that the banner appeared on Sams last night - I can't remember which year it was. I did think 81 - but someone said Sam went the year before? Anyway, the talk on the night was definitely aimed at Sam so it followed that the banner was aimed at him. Hence me and my mate Mick Bradbury from Boston at the time, doing the petition.
Barry Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 so do YOU know who hung the banner! me thinks it came from the pottewries! I'm just struggling with the Scottish flag bit - my spot at Wigan, under the staircase on the right hand side put me right underneath where it was hung, so I'm opting out now, I've put my two penneth in and I'll leave it to the real investigators.

Peter99 Posted September 20, 2008 Author Posted September 20, 2008 so do YOU know who hung the banner! me thinks it came from the pottewries! I have received three post code areas via pm - they are not from Stoke. I'm unable to say any more at the time.

I'm not saying it wasn;t a scottish flag Barry - far too early to rule that out! Just that the culprits were not the scotts lads.
Peter99 Posted September 20, 2008 Author Posted September 20, 2008 Christ! The tension! You're not being sarcastic are you Barry?
Barry Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 You're not being sarcastic are you Barry? God no Peter. I think you are doing a sterling job of tracking down a possibly lost moment in time mate - and nice for me that I remember that moment. Keep at it mate.
