ImberBoy Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 It's all over Casanova Coffee Casanova De-lite (1980) mega dance record, jazz funk?? Disco?? Northernsoul???? Can any one remember this? Was it ever played at Wigan Casino? I believe it's on the same label as Benny Troy "I want to give you tomorrow"? Both records where possibly cut around about the same time, I remember Benny Troy circa this time as a real biggie!

Petebangor Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) Most definitely a Sam spin in Wigan,he played it as a new release and it charted too. Edited September 19, 2008 by petebangor

Not that it has any bearing on the original post - but didn't this chart? Ironside

Ooops! Should have read your post first Mark! Doh! I've mentioned it on here before about Sam's sacking at Wigan. His last night was the night the big banner "Keep the faith not the funk" banner was hung over the balcony. Me and me mate from Boston got quite a hefty petition signed in support of Sam - didn't change anything, but proved Sam had plenty of supporters at the time. Edited September 19, 2008 by Peter99

Sad night for the cassino when they gave Sam the elbow. If it was for playing Coffee that is. He had a very good fan base up there but all the annal ''soul ceased to be made after 69'' brigade influenced the decision. Look what he made space for ...shit like Joe 90 and the like. I know he was upset but his freinds stood by him and look what he has achieved since....You can probably gather from this that I didnt agree with his sacking but like so many others we just payed to get in and our opinions didnt matter.

It was a sad night indeed. There were many people that night who signed our petition - we did give it to Sam. We got a bit of stick from some - I was only a young lad but didn't give a fook. I've always been a big fan of Sam - one of my favourite spinners and a nice guy to boot.
Cunnie Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Spun by Sam at the Casino & also by Searling at Clifton Hall & on his Soul Sauce show but not sure if RS played it at Wigan. Would he have been sacked too??? Think it was played by them both prior to it charting. If not mistaken originally recorded by Ruby Andrews on Zodiac.
Guest Brett F Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Yeah, you are in "nail on the head" territory Martino, i've got this by Ruby Andrews. Also got it by Loleatta Holloway on Aware. Brett

Peter99 Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) Just listened to that for the first time in years - it's not quite as bad as I remembered it. Lots of worse things been played over the years. I think this is one for Smiffy. Edited September 19, 2008 by Peter99

Pete S Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Just listened to that for the first time in years - it's not quite as bad as I remembered it. Lots of worse things been played over the years. I think this is one for Smiffy. I think if Sam had played that at Wigan when I was going I'd have thrown a shoe at him. Fortunately I packed it in about 8 months before he started there, thank goodness. I think he was sacked for not toning down his playlist which included too much modern. I remember my friend Richard who carried on going after us saying how good his first spot was and how it went downhill after that.
Pete S Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Joe 90 (original Barry Gray version) vs Casanova. God what a choice to have to make. I'd go with Joe.

Thank god ive got so many great memories of the place, i remember that night when he played that, all my mates were mr m`s regulars, but i allways stayed in the main hall, mainly due to the brilliance of richard searling, that was the only time i thought of walking out of that place
Peter99 Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Sam did play the odd questionable track - but so did most of the other jocks. For me he's always been a top, top dj and all round good geezer. Now - the thought of that night with the fookin banner has got me thinking - just who was it? I never knew on the night and don't until this day. But - in good old Ironside style I'm gonna track the fookers down! I'm gonna post up a new thread. So lets be aving yers!

Got to agree with you there pete, sam is an inspiration to us all, a lot of people forget just what great records he has played over the years and his enthusiasm for the music is still as strong today as ever, plus as you say a really nice guy as well
Soul Shrews Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Petty sure Joe 90 was played before "Casanova" dunno if Sam played it at Wigan but I remember him playing it at one of the Oak Hotel (Shrewsbury) " modern" nights and introducing it as his "favourite record of the year" Love it by Ms Andrews and Ms Holloway but.............. Coffee ?................... I'll "ave a cuppa tea please Cheers Paul

Neil Rushton Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Casanova composed by one of the Detroit greats George McGregor - top songwriter, drummer, producer and a&r man. Had the privilege of interviewing him whilst gathering info for The Precisions album on Joe Boy/Inferno - he tells great stories about Detroit in the 60's. And he's the reason "Sugar Ain't Sweet" - The Precisions is so rare (all revealed in sleeve notes to the album).

I happily signed it ridiculous desicion - great Dj and king rarities at the time too. Casanova was never his best but as Ian D will confirm quite common for new obscurities to get played then, and for them to get pressed in quantity and even chart.

Both records where possibly cut around about the same time, I remember Benny Troy circa this time as a real biggie! Sam was the spinner of this one, it was massive at the winter gardens Cleethorpes, hugh floor filler too, six weeks after him promoting it for what seemed like an age it hit the charts and was never played again ..... Ace tune in my opinion and have spun it out a couple of times recently.....
Guest john s Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Wow. I just think of 'Casanova' as being a frighteningly cheesy disco record, which I remember from the time. I can't imagine it ever being played on any rare soul scene.
paup-ine Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I can remember dancing to Casanova - but I think in a normal nightclub. And thank god they did play such as like in 'normal' night clubs which was a lot better than: sugar sugar - Archers New York New York Stars on 45 I need not go on..................... P
Barry Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 His last night was the night the big banner "Keep the faith not the funk" banner was hung over the balcony I was there that night, Searling came on, looked at the banner (the lettering was over a Scottish flag) which was hung over the balcony to his left and before playing his opening track, said: "The only good thing about that banner is that it's in Spurs colours."

Steve G Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 (edited) Wow. I just think of 'Casanova' as being a frighteningly cheesy disco record, which I remember from the time. I can't imagine it ever being played on any rare soul scene. Loads of new releases played John - look at the 76/ 77 period: Eddie Holman "This will be a night", Silvetti "Spring rain", Tavares "It only takes a minute" and "Heaven must be mising an angel", Anthony White on Salsoul, Brainstorm "Loving is really my game"......all massive at Wigan . What heady days they were. "Casanova" although was just another one in that line. Also Leon Bryant "hotsy Totsy" big at Wigan around the same time as Casanova, maybe a bit later. It wasn't just rare soul back then....Steve Edited September 20, 2008 by Steve G
Barry Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 The track knitted in quite well at the time as a lot of Modern stuff being played was from major labels, albums as well as 12" and was played at Leicester, Hinckley, Rotherham etc by many different jocks. It was a floor-filler.
Peter99 Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I was there that night, Searling came on, looked at the banner (the lettering was over a Scottish flag) which was hung over the balcony to his left and before playing his opening track, said: "The only good thing about that banner is that it's in Spurs colours." Yep bang on Barry - I forgot about old Dickie saying that!
