Guest Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Recently found this 45 in amongst my boxes of 45s: Men From Macon - Fire Lighter / Soul Of A Man - Charay 89 All the label discogs that I've found list release 89 with a different a side 'East Of Eden'. Anyone shed any light on this particular 45? Will post a sound clip up bit later on, it's a storming funk track! Adam.

Hi Bob, Yes the numbering for the label is somewhat strange, with about 6 different releases for Charay 60! Looked at a couple of discogs and they give the different variations on certain releases but this one isn't in any of them. Hopefully Sebastian will be able to shed some light on it. Cheers, Adam. PS. Not forgotten about the list of 45s for you...just not got round to it yet!

Hi Adam I tried to find out about a couple of releases as I had just bought a copy of C-89-A THE MEN FROM MACON When it arrived it was Vocal / Instrumental. This article suggests that there is a Salvation side too for C-89, unless I have read it wrong. >>> BOBBY SKEL <<< Certainly a strange Numbering System Edited July 1, 2011 by 45cellar

Hopefully Sebastian will be able to shed some light on it. Charay 89 was released at least 3 times, maybe even 4 (or more!). I've seen these three for sale on eBay and on sales lists: CHARAY 89 - Men From Macon - Soul Of A Man / East Of Eden CHARAY 89 - Men From Macon - Soul Of A Man / Fire Lighter CHARAY 89 - Men From Macon - Soul Of A Man (vocal) / Soul Of A Man (instrumental) I have only seen the following variation in a label listing and not "in the flesh", so don't know if it exists: CHARAY 89 - Men From Macon - Soul Of A Man / Salvation Such a mess of a discography! But it is possible to date (to some extent at least) the time of release for the different variations, as for example the "Fire Lighter" issue has got the 3032 Santa Fe Trail address and the later "Soul Of A Man" vocal/instr issue has got the PO Box 11152 address. It seems like they changed to the PO Box address during 1969 (for all Major Bill Smith label - Charay, Soft, LeCam etc.). Edited September 18, 2008 by Sebastian

Thanks Sebastian This is the reason I believe CHARAY 89 - Men From Macon - Soul Of A Man / Salvation May exist, as stated in the Bobby Skel article. Salvation Rita Lee Charay # 101Robert Thomas Charay #87Cresa Watson [AKA Carolyn Sullivan?] Charay #90Men From Macon [AKA Bobby Skel & The Red Ryders] Charay #89 Never seen one though. Possibly where the later Re-Issue came from. Edited September 18, 2008 by 45cellar

Guest Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 So,the white/purple text,Rita Lee's, are boots Ken.? No yellow Charay? Don't ask me but i would say no not a boot, the yellow one by Cressa is actualy R Lee and if i was her would have had all Cressa's destroyed thats why they are super rare but bogus, later Bill released R Lee to make up for it so proper orig, so there i didn't make any of this up much.
Rich B Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 As I have no credibilty to lose I thought I would add my two penneth. I didn't record serial numbers, but when I sold up, in my collection (on the yellow/green label design) was; Robert Thomas "Salvation" / "Soul of a man" - no mention of Six feet under as far as I can recall. Men from Macon "Salvation" / "Soul of a man" Cresa Watson "Salvation" / can't remember The Men from Macon and Cresa Watson still had the cover up damage and came from one of the Mecca dj's (though as an intermediary got them for me I'm not sure if it was Colin or Ian). The Robert Thomas was in a Record Corner soul pack. In the 70's the purple/white Rita Lee's were considered to be bootlegs as they only turned up en masse with lots of other Major Bill related cuts didn't they? So, is current opinion that all of those things were originals? i.e. Edie Robin etc? Or am I missing some irony here? Aound that time I also coveted a Pic & Bill "Talk about love" (?) on the yellow/green Charay label - anyone know whether that ever became cheap as chips? best, RB
