Ian Dewhirst Posted July 17, 2010 Author Posted July 17, 2010 Blimey, it's been almost a month since my last show. In that period I've survived a couple of extreme traumas, several catastrophic incidents, a near death experience and a hospital visit which resulted in me being drenched in piss.......someone else's unfortunately......... so pretty much a normal month by and large. Anyway, I'm in a good mood and ready to lash down some serious tuneage before I take off for a week in the sun and hopefully a period of sober reflection and not much rest....... If anyone happens to be over in Ibiza next week then there's several GREAT gigs happening, namely Aura on Tuesday night (Kylie Minogue was down for the last one and she danced her ass off all night to some serious stuff), Wax Da Jam Beach Party @ Kumharas on Wednesday and what will the gig of the century @ Sands Beach Bar on Saturday where Paul Schofield will be joining me for another historic night of bliss if the first one was anything to go by! Oh and then the all-night shindig down at the Es Vive hotel which will truck-on to da break of dawn......and then I'll come back and sleep for a week...... So try and join me tomorrow for another LIVE Original Mastercuts show which will feature several brand new KILLER re-edits, an exclusive first play on an unreleased Northend tune from the 80's and the usual mixture of Soul music throughout all the eras. Ian Dewhirst Posted August 3, 2010 Author Posted August 3, 2010 OK, lovely show on Sunday with the minimum of cock-ups and joined by a forthcoming new face to Starpoint - Rob ????? (he's still deciding on his radio name) who basically interviewed me throughout the show and was filled with enthusiasm and joi d'vive! Will give the details as soon as he gets his first show under way but I have a feeling he'll be a great addition to the Starpoint team, so welcome Rob! And, as per usual, I gave out some totally erroneous information on the show LOL. I got my dates confused, so if anyone's out and about then try and join me at the following gigs:- Sat 7th August The Southend Wigan Casino @ The Kursaal, Southend (Northern gig with Russ Winstanley no less) Tues 10th August Aura, Ibiza (with Paul Schofield, E.A.S.E. and the Wax-On crew) Thurs 12th August, "The Record Players" Book Launch @ The Book Club, Hoxton, London (with Bill Brewster, Frank Broughton, Jeff Dexter, Andrew Weatherall, Terry Farley + others) I'll be playing a Northern into Modern type set following legendary Mod Jeff Dexter so should be fun. Saturday/Sunday 15th/16th August, The Goodwood Vintage Festival (Soul Casino, Sunday Night with Chris Bangs and Chris Hill and elsewhere throughout the weekend). Sunday 22nd August, Six Million Steps @ East Village, Hoxton (with Alan, JJ, Dave, Andrew, Lofty all playing out for the first time in YEARS!) And for all the mob in Ibiza, myself and Paul Schofield will be back @ Sat 28th August, The Sands Beach Bar Sat/Sun 28th/29th August, Es Vive Hotel Club Tues 31st August, Aura OK, that's enough gratuitous plugging. Ian Dewhirst Posted August 21, 2010 Author Posted August 21, 2010 (edited) Wow, what a whirlwind of a month. I'm knackered. The most rest I've had in the last 3 weeks has been putting this show together. Since the last show, I've shelled around everywhere like a man possessed. So some shout-outs are due..... A big yell to the GREAT crowd @ Southend who turned out for myself, Russ, Kev and Jim a couple of weeks back. Great fun and I met Tony Hayzer for the first time too, so hi Tony! A great weekend all round folks! Big love to George and all the Wax-On posse over in Ibiza for yet another great night @ Aura with Paul Schofield a week last Tuesday. We'll see you all next week @ The Sands (Sat 28th August), Es Vive (Sat/Sun 29th August all night) and Aura (Tues 31st August) for 4 more days of sunshine and music to die for...... Lovely to meet all the DJ History crew at The Book Club for the launch of Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton's new book, "The Record Players" a week last Thursday and great to meet Andrew Weatherall and Jeff Dexter too two legendary DJ's in their respective fields and two lovely blokes. There are perks to this job after all..... And then there was Vintage @ Goodwood. Quite simply the best festival of all time with a crowd to die for. Big ups to Wayne Hemmingway for his vision and hard work, Eddie Piller and Greg Wilson for being top-notch curators and all the DJ's and Artists for making it a once in a lifetime experience. And an absolute gas being sandwiched between Chris Bangs and Chris Hill despite the mental imagery. A pleasure playing with you gentlemen, if you 'scuse the expression. What a weekend. I'm still buzzing............. And coming up, directly after the show this Sunday, I'll be shelling down to the Six Million Steps session @ East Village in Hoxton with Alan, JJ, Dave, Andrew, Lofty and special guest Mark Roman manning the decks. I can't think of a better way to close the weekend. Anyway, down to business. What do we have in store on the show this week then........... Ian Dewhirst Posted August 24, 2010 Author Posted August 24, 2010 Wow. Sunday's show was stretching the systems to the limit! An unbelievable audience coming from everywhere. The streams were maxed out which is maybe why the download link sounds kinda thin. At least it does on this laptop. I need to whack the download link over a decent system and listen how it sounds. If anyone out there can tell me how it sounds over a decent system I'd appreciate it. Music this great deserves to be heard LOUD and CLEAR...... Anyway, a lovely vibe everywhere this Sunday folks. As per usual the show was the best part of the last couple of weeks against some strong competition on the gig side. Vintage @ Goodwood was just unbelievable (book NOW for next year - don't say I didn't warn ya) and ANY gig in Ibiza is an obvious no-brainer, but despite all these advantages, my fave time is the 4 hours of LIVE Original Mastercuts shows I get to do twice a month, 'cos it's like some kind of personal therapy to me. Shit. I should PAYING you to listen.......... Errrr. Maybe that's going a tad too far come to think about it LOL. The point is I LOVE this show and get a big kick out of doing it. So thanks for listening 'cos that makes it so much sweeter. And we rocked it this week......... Ian Dewhirst Posted October 16, 2010 Author Posted October 16, 2010 (edited) Well, generally around this time of the year I'd normally be careering around the Prestatyn Weekender dipping my toe into all the different rooms. However, once again I've managed to come down with my usual bi-annual dose of killer flu due to 80% of London coughing and spluttering in my face every 3 minutes! So I flirted with the idea but I think it was the prospect of a 12 hour return drive, 48 hours of no sleep and 2 days of dining at the Beachcomber which put paid to this year's excursion. So I put a show together instead. Plus, this week, another one of our heroes, Norman 'General' Johnson from the Showmen and Chairmen Of The Board passed away so naturally I'll be doing my level best to do a 'lil Original Mastercuts tribute to one of the most distinctive and enduring voices in Soul Music history. If you have a dry eye by the end of the show you won't be the only one 'cos this guy was one of the soundtracks to my youth. R.I.P. Norman. We love ya. Anyway, an absolutely BELTING show this week folks with the usual pick of the best new releases, killer re-edits, creative remixes, 80's gems, Northern classics, some undersung and relatively unknown beautiful mellow gems, an alternative Charles Drain take on a classic and both the A and B sides of the unbelievable Otis Williams release from 1979 - the best 70's double-sider I think I've ever heard and totally unknown until J. Soulsmith dug it up! This is what we live for innit? The Original Mastercuts Show with Ian Dewhirst LIVE this Sunday 17th October 2010 between 2.00-4.00pm on everyone's favourite Soul station www.starpointradio.com. Featuring......... Ian Dewhirst Posted November 13, 2010 Author Posted November 13, 2010 (edited) Well this time of year is really head down no nonsense slog for me and this show is kinda like the only time I get to actually relax and listen to music I actually want to listen to, so it's like therapy really. So I look forward to every show. It's the only time I get to actually relax lately. So as per usual, we'll be listening to what I've been listening to over the last couple of weeks which includes an affectionate look back to some undervalued soulful House beauties which are all fundamentally brilliant tunes, some absolutely wonderful creative new re-edits on tunes we love (some of which surprise some folk), some 60's gems that never get played enough, a slew of vintage Northern killers, some wonderfully atmospheric slabs of mellow soul brilliance and a trio of beauties to close the proceedings to round things off just nicely. Yep, looking forward to this. To think they pay me the big bucks to listen to my favourite music for 2 hours on a Sunday afternoon with a bunch of like-minded people around the world tuning in is just brilliant. Shit. I should be paying them! Hope you can join me LIVE tomorrow at 2.00pm UK time. It's been 6 weeks since I've done a radio show what with Xmas stuff and then the BRILLIANT Luxury Soul Weekender with Jean Carn, Michael Henderson, Cool Million and a brilliant crowd and vibe for the first weekend of 2011. Ian Dewhirst Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 (edited) Never any rest for the wicked. Been a busy week as usual so as part of my three-step recovery from a ridiculous lifestyle, welcome to another 2 hours in the Soul Music Sunday afternoon comfort zone otherwise known as the Original Mastercuts Show! This week the emphasis is on GREAT, GREAT productions all the way through our usual trawl through 5 decades of breath-taking Soul music. Ian Dewhirst Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 (edited) Lovely crowd for the show this week, so many thanks for everyone who joined in the Sunday afternoon banter in the Starpoint chatroom. Also great to have a truly international audience which stretches from Melbourne, Australia to Dallas in Texas via Crystal Palace in Sarf London and all other points of the UK. The power of the internet is truly staggering and we're lucky to have such a fantastic tool at our disposal, so many thanks to Sir Tim Berners-Lee from London for inventing it! Good on ya Tim! Also many thanks to the new listeners who have joined us this year and to all the re-edit and remix enthusiasts, especially to those that are sending me stuff directly. There's some truly awesome stuff coming through, many of which leave the originals in the shade, so thanks once again, This week, a show full of much-loved goodies and long-term show faves, some killer re-edits, some wonderful Philly gems, some underplayed Soul goodies and a final 30 minutes of mellow-groove bliss. Hey, that's what we do on grey winter Sunday afternoons in the UK. Gotta get some sunshine somehow!
