Not at all, in the same way as it would p*ss you off if you turned up at a gallery and someone was selling illegal prints of one of your originals.

Or if you went to an art show and there were a load of prints hanging up

Actually Im not that sure why I made that original comment because personally I have nothing against covering records up. Used to be fun trying to find out what they were until I bought some of those X-Ray glasses advertised at the back of Superman comics which worked a treat. The next door neighbour had a nice pair of........ but anyway I mainly used them on C/U's. Especially after my arrest.

Probably a gut reaction against what I perceived as a mixture of elitism and over-reaction trying to point out that OVO is not beyond questioning when certain aspects are put under the microscope.

I can see slightly the analogy with the art gallery but I would have thought that the only person entitled to be a bit miffed turning up at a do and finding someone playing a bootleg would be a person involved in making the record. As Maak said he might be equally upset to see his efforts going out under a false name.

Whilst DJ Lazy with his carvers is a bit of a fraud any DJ worth his salt would not be phased by having a few of his playlist hi-jacked. Play something else, even if it's through gritted teeth and don't let DJ Lazy know he's got to you because that's what he wants. To be noticed.

Yeah but it's very RARE Cheese presumably?

Ian D :D

Not necessarily, Ian.

The 'essence' of 'Soul Essence' is that the DJ's play Quality over Rarity.

Sure some records played are rare but they only get played if they're really, really good!

What's more, the format is irrelevant and all legitimate media is recognised and utilised (stay with me.... I'm talking about CD's here!)

The reason for this acceptance is that the DJ's are playing Soul 'MUSIC'... not just Soul 'Records'.... the dancers want to dance to Soul 'MUSIC'... not just Soul 'Records' and people want to hear Soul 'MUSIC'... not just Soul 'Records'.

Reckon you'd love it, Ian.

Note, no oldies back then.

Can somebody explain to me the difference between a "revived item" and an oldie? perhaps has something to do with the DJ playing it...

However, the scene has changed a lot hasn't it? It's actually much more diverse in tempo then before so you can get away with beat ballads, early 60's and even slowies etc, etc.

And is better for it, IMVHO, judging from the RW Wigan playlists that pasted up so frequently on this site!

That's sort of where I'm coming from. Fair play to the dj's who have done the crate digging and bought over all these wonderful tunes and they get the respect they deserve. But at the end of the day, they own the record, not the music.

Sean

I would Sean. THAT sounds like a progressive venue with the correct philosophy for this day and age!

Truth be told, I like a bit of everything as some of the best pieces of 'MUSIC' I've heard in the last 5 years have been via several different formats OV, LP, CD or MP3 - I'm not particularly aware of the format when I first hear something out. If what comes out of the speakers slays me then I'm not even that bothered about the format to be honest. It's the music bit I like mostly.

And can you imagine never being allowed to hear this....

The Originals "Suspicion"

https://www.zshare.net/audio/19098538a565d8f5/

or even this

Freda Payne "Memories And Souvenirs"

https://www.zshare.net/audio/19098713fea3cf8e/

Doesn't bear thinking about for me. How much great music could effectively be censored simply because it's never actually been on vinyl through no fault of it's own?

Guess it all depends if you're a Soul 'Record' collector... or a Soul MUSIC collector (lover) Ian.

There are some who don't give a fig if they never get to hear new Soul MUSIC. They just collect the records (a bit like stamp collecting - and little to do with music).

I heard a DJ played an unreleased track off his mobile phone, at a do, recently.

Apparently the dancers just kept on dancin'

Yep, a revived item would be something which maybe had been played at an earlier time but which had never taken off before. A certain deejay might then decide that maybe the timing is better 2nd time around and hence start hammering it again and give it a new lease of life.

You could say that Lee Fields "Take Me Back" could be termed a 'revived item' in that it only received plays at select venues in the mid 70's and never became a classic first time around. 30 years later Butch starts playing it and lo and behold, finds a new appreciative audience 2nd time around.

Some examples of 'revived items' in the mid 70's include "Looking For You" - Garnett Mimms, "Better Use Your Head" - Little Anthony & The Imperials, "Girl Don't Make Me Wait" - Bunny Sigler, "Keep On" - Sterling Magee etc, etc - all were 'known' and played in a couple of places here and there, but didn't really establish themselves until the whole scene adopted 'em.

Whereas an oldie would be an established monster from first time around, if you see what I mean.

'A venue's only as good as it's deejays tastes' is a mantra worth remembering.

I pretty much stopped going when I emigrated in '76 but in those early years it was pretty magical. Everyone played a part, but Richard Searling and Kev Roberts made the trips worthwhile for me primarily and both of 'em had phenomenally rare OV LOL.

And let's not forget that it was Russ who championed "Put Your Arms Around Me" - The Sherry's on OV and had the 2nd copy of "Cool Off" amongst other things.

I'm kinda glad that my last trip was in '75/'76 as I only remember the good times. I started losing interest when the Joey Dee's, "Hawaii Five 0"'s, Joe 90's and Gary Lewis & The Playboys started getting aired.......

I realised the gig was up a few years ago, when I staggered into Madame Jo-Jo's with two crates of 12" vinyl. I finally managed to manouver my way to the stage, dumped my crates and stood there panting to get my breath back. The kid who was deejaying had no records. Just two I-Pods.

He even had an I-Pod 'gunbelt' which held his I-Pods like a western gunslinger.

I said to him somewhat snottily, "Don't You Have ANY records then"?

He said, "What For"?

I said, "To give you plenty of choice and variety in what you play!"

He said, "How may tunes do you have there mate"?

I said, "about 300"

He said, "I've got 20,000 right here" he said patting his holsters.

He then proceeded to click to the next track and watched the floor swell to 200 people dancing completely unaware of the format.

To add salt to the wound, I lined up my first record to play and SOME PRICK bumped the deck knocking the stylus onto the mat, so all the 200 dancers heard was the noise of a stylus scraping the deck!

He looked at me with a smirk and said, "You do it your way and I'll do it my way mate, OK"?

My ideal gig would be OV and Laptop. Even though the quality from the laptop would be far superior to the quality of the vinyl, I guess you'd have to have vinyl for certain gigs wouldn't you?

OVO is often an excuse for the dullards to get behind the decks and play the most unimaginative boring sets of dross made up of tunes they dreamed of owning when they were teens after their 3 trips to the casino and now they have their mortgage and divorce paid off they can afford a 200 count full of Wonky Northern and of course they want to DJ. And when they can't they set up their own Wonky night in a village hall.

An OVO policy, although very important to the fabric of everything that this "thing" is, should not be an excuse to allow dullards to undermine the most important thing, the excitement and the buzz of the party. When that is gone, the "thing" is gone.

It's a serious problem at the moment, in my opinion.

hey WONKY is better than dllard.....top word used in this context anyway lol

not true Ian, there's 100's if not 1000's of vinyl records that are affordable, by that I mean under 50 quid with many around the £25 mark. The trouble with this scene is rarity is the be all and end all for too many, if it's expensive it's good, if it's cheap its, well not good enough.

Maybe if promoters got away from the big money DJ syndrome and booked those that use some imagination and played records that don't have to cost a fortune but do not suffer quality wise then the scene maybe a better place for it.

Must admit i agree with every thing you say, it has worked for us at the Railway Club in Bournemouth playing lots of under 50 pounders even though we are quite capable of playing big money tunes between us, we still get more of a buzz finding these under played and sometimes never played cheapies, biggrin.gif and the crowd seems to appreciate it as well, which makes it easier for us

Thank you Sean.

You're very welcome Gavin.

I don't have a problem with rare (or not particularly rare) original vinyl. As you know, as a collector, I've got tons of it. Just think it's a great shame that other media is given a wide berth in some quarters - and that in itself excludes many fabulous Soul tracks from being played.

After all, if we are Soul Music fans, why should it really matter that much?

The music policy at Essence speaks for itself. The quality is unmatched and that's why Soul fans from all over the UK and Europe make it the first date in the Diary each year.

Much kudos to you and your team... hopefully for many years to come.

drax does apparantly laugh.gif In all seriousness yes most northern nights do not have such technology as CD players for the unreleased stuff. ANyway you don't have to justify it Russ. My unissued stuff is on carver, just I don't play them that often.

d 2

While it is true Drax did have a CD player in the rig up, its no longer used and Drax is a vinyl only venue and has been for some time now. With regard to whether boots are played I cannot say, My recent spot at Drax consisted of original vinyl only the only exception being 2 "Carvers" of unreleased stuff.

Half way into my spot a policeman decided to walk around the dancefloor (no kidding it really happened, ask anyone who was there) Why he did this I dont know, was it the soul police checking for CD's or was he looking for somone. It remains a mystery, I did however play Martha Reeves "No one there" as the next record.

This old chestnut of Original Vinyl Only V other means seems to go round in circles, fact of the matter is on this scene the only way to do the DJ thing is with OVO in terms of gaining a solid reputation as a DJ, respect from fellow DJ's and collectors and doing it the right and proper way, the very nature and backbone of the scene is it's fed and based on in the main by obscure, hard to find rare soul records, no matter how you dress it up or use the excuse of it's 'what comes out of the speaker' that counts I think everyone knows in their heart of hearts that there is no short cuts in becoming a DJ on this scene, big difference of being someone who plays music and a true rare soul DJ, having been part of this DJ thing for a number of years it has always been important to me to do it the right way with OVO, head held high knowing that my efforts are at least authentic and I'm not talking about how rare or how much the records cost or are worth.

I can name many people on here who sport the corner of OVO thats just how it is, old school, keeping it real and doing the very best they can, there are hundreds of records I've never owned but would not dream of using a bootleg or carver just to play a popular or big tune it's simply not in the rule book, leave it to the DJ's with the real deal to play, dig deep, move on and develop what you do within your means and try and create your own style rather than cutting corners and cheating basically yourself.

Those comments don't apply at Yarmouth Sean. At Yarmouth it's a case of what hasn't been played already and I am normally on after Uncle Sammy who keeps the floor very busy.

Does remind me of a story Jo told me once. Some misery at These old shoes, so she goes up to him and the conversation goes:

Jo "What's up, you look really miserable?"

Misery: "I paid £3 to come in here"

Jo: "Oh really, well here's your £3 back, now drink up and F8ck off"

Punter: 'Come on you lot, the DJ's an alien, drink up, we're going somewhere else where we can dance to the same fifty odd records we've danced to for the last 30 years, we don't care about hearing anything new do we lads, in fact i'm not even sure i like soul music..'.

I rest my f**king case.

That's a good point, it is another form of dumbing down. yes.gif

How about this instead:

Punter: 'Excuse me Mister DJ, would you perhaps have (insert random tune name here) that you could play for me and my friends, it's one of our favourites and we'd love to hear it, it would really add to the enjoyment of our night, for which we've paid seven pounds entrance fee'?

DJ Warwick Hunt: No, sorry.

Or this even:

Punter: 'Excuse me Mister DJ, would you perhaps have (insert random tune name here) that you could play for me and my friends, it's one of our favourites and we'd love to hear it. I realise that there's only one known copy in the world and that's in Japan, but I was wondering if you could play it off the CD which is legitimate and supplies royalties to the artist and in fact, has earnt him far more in royalties than the one-off copy in Japan ever did. It would really add to the enjoyment of our night, for which we've paid seven pounds entrance fee'?

DJ Warwick Hunt: "No, sorry mate, original vinyl only. If you wanna hear that you'll have to go to Japan'.

I know what will help sort this out, i'm gonna find a venue, start a monthly night, charge peeps 3,4, 5, quid entry, and along with 2 or 3 mates play our bedroom/front room top 20's, if by chance the punters (dreadful term) don't have the same taste as me and my mates and don't instantly 'switch on' to the tunes i have listened to countless times in my 'bubble' i can always label them buffoons, come on here and preach that the minnions out there need educating (the worst term ever) and wonder why my/our music isn't appreciated by the ignorant masses, then we can all have a group hug and console each other in the knowledge we know best,

That's if this hasn't already been tried?

Do/dance/listen to and enjoy whatever it is that floats ya boat, and don't be dismayed/bewildered if it ain't anyone elses cup o tea,

OVO or otherwise lifes too short,

I'm a hypocrit on these matters I suppose. I totally agree with the above yet run an ovo venue, although I admit, I dont stand by the door and vigourously check all vinyl brought in by guest Dj's BUT Neil wouldn't book a DJ who doesn't have the tunes to play and it's well known that when Neil, Dolly or I buy vinyl it's been ovo and all our residents play ovo.

You'd never get an equal view on here because the kind of people who attend or run the venue's that are badly termed CRaP would not be interested in a thread like this in the first place and many of them dont even bother with the internet!.

Good points earlier in thread too from Soulsorts.
