Guest Matt Male Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 On a previous comment, not one of your Steve, it is stupid to assume that all allnighters are OVO and all soulnights allow other formats, QoFxx Was that previous comment mine then Chrissie? I didn't say we should assume all soul nights allow other formats, i said we should only assume that if they don't say they are OVO. Personally i think it's stupid to think they are OVO if they don't advertise as such.
Guest andrew bin Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 i would be first to aggree i am a crap dj thats why i don't dj
Pete Eccles Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Very good but please do point me in the direction of the word ONLY, not saying for one second this isn't the case, just pointing out that we can all be pedantic and find the odd ad that does promote OVO, If a venue plays one original 45 they can then advertise 'plays original vinyl'
Pete Eccles Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Come on Peter, a venue that goes on until 6am is an allnighter and one that goes on until 2am is a soul night, they are not the same thing at all. It's wrong to assume a four hour difference is all there is. Yes i always assumed everyone thought nighters should always play OVO (even if they don't). Or is it just me then? I'm uneasy about the term CRAP actually, there are plenty of good soul nights that aren't original vinyl only, Nuneaton for one, but aren't 'Crap' by any stretch of the imagination in that sense. Maybe a different term for venues that don't play Original Vinyl Only? Makes no odds to me if venues don't want to advertise as OVO, it's the promotors choice and fair enough. Personally i have always and will continue to assume the DJs play boots/CDs and reissues if they don't advertise as OVO. Whats with the Peter when anyone slightly disagrees with me Matthew? All i'm saying theres soul nights that as far as they can (same as nighters) pride thereselves on OVO, without feeling the need to use it as an advertising tool, PETE

I must admit I never even considered that DJs on what is a specialist scene would play anything other than original vinyl.
Citizen P Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Here's one I've seen used-- Playing 100% Vinyl Tony

Pete Eccles Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 No styrene then? Recently heard a dj (won't say where or who) who opened their set with ' thanks to 'whoever' for the last hour you now have me for a hour of back to back vinyl' what's all that about?

For polite read patronising, not in an occupation that needs either a polite or patronisating approach, never have been, but apology accepted and no offence taken, we differ in opinions on this topic and that's cool, it's what it's all about, opinions Pete BTW i'm not your mate either

Cheltsoulnights Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Didn't the food thing used to be a way of getting round some of the old Licensing Laws, not always an act of benevolence on the part of the promoter. I think I remember going to a Sunday "All Dayer" in Gloucester in the 1980's where there was a "buffet" included. Des Parker I went to that one John manship was in attendance i believe
Cheltsoulnights Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Yep must agree. Crazy sometimes In the Cheltenham/Gloucester Area there are 3 main promoters putting on nights roughly every 2 months with rare clashes. But last month someone put an independant night on which clashed with the regular night and next month another one has done the same with my night. Totally stupid. The established night might lose a few but the other night is half empty everytime. With 5 spare Saturdays every 2 Months they only had to pick one. Both promoters could even have gone to the other venues and advertised there. Our next date has been advertised since April and our last one was a pretty full house.
Phil_H Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Just a small question from me, can we have a firm definition of what is classed as OVO? Studio acetate, first issue, first UK issue or first US issue, their could be some very quiet nights depending on where you choose to draw the line.

There's a seperate thread on that Phil - goes into many nuances out there

Chris L Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 I can honestly say that the soul scene of a few years ago is now well and truly dead and gone and is in complete freefall as far as I can see. The whole situation is quite pathetic: 37 on one night at the last count - I reckon thats a record! If there are too many venues then only the strong shall survive. All the weak poorly attended, will, eventually die off. So, having said that hold off that suicide attempt for a few months at least, with the current economic situation likely to get worse you'll see a much more discerning public. Lastly you as an indivual have no Gordon brown given right to say who's NS venue can or cannot operate, soul fans have and alaways will vote with their feet (probably dance too) so............... grow up and get a frecking life...........

Thanks for the `frecking` good piece of advice (Whatever that means) I do have a life and a pretty good one at that...And what exactly has Gordon Brown got to do with it...Do you seriously think he is in any position to be making any decisions about anything? Can`t see any evidence of anything he`s done lately that warrants any positive sort of comment by anyone ; I did think that the first part of your post was pretty good and made some sense but you obviously couldn`t keep it up to the very end of the post without resorting to the most ridiculous and childish comment `Grow up and get a life` is that the best you can do? Honestly if you want to get personal try a bit harder next time. Sharon I wasn`t going to post up on this thread again as I considered it closed and enough salient points had been made. I still stand by that as your point to me offered nothing new and was just blatantly ignorant.
Reg Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 I've lost it...what's this thread about? Sandwiches/Original Vinyl/Clashes??? Btw I have helped promote soul nights in the past and anybody who played anything over than OV at our nights would not have been asked back
Guest gordon russell Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Obviously following Russ then what ...holly? lol
