Phild
I think Soulbid's a great idea but most of the stuff on there has starting prices that are much higher than Ebay. The end prices are not usually much higher than Ebay but it just doesn't feel like you're going to get as much of a bargain. My opinion only. It'll never catch on whilst the reserves are there. Entrepreneur's take chances, it's too loaded against the buyer, too safe for you the seller Daz. You did ask. Entrepreneur's take chances, it's too loaded against the buyer, too safe for you the seller Daz. You did ask. I think that's true as well, sadly. If you've got something like The Arabians and bid 120 to make 20 or 30 quid on it, and still don't meet the reserve, it does make you think. If the reserve had been 50 then there would have been a dogfight with people trying to win it. Link to comment Social source share

Phil Hello Phil Thanks for your comments, I hear what you are saying my friend. In fact I'm painfully aware of the situation, however I would ask you to bear a few things in mind. Soulbid is very young, just a month old, in that short space of time I am staggered at the response, the hits to the site and the amount of people that have actually registered. Even eBay had to start somewhere and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have put your 'Lady in green' on there for $10 with no reserve in those days. There is no rule anywhere to say that you must get a bargain from an auction, after all who really gets anything half decent off eBay at a bargain price these days? unless you've scoured the C&W section People know that if they use eBay because of the perceived number of people who inhabit it they are pretty safe in starting their big record small, Soulbid does not have that surity yet. Plenty of people start their auctions on eBay at going rate, mainly because it's as cheap to do that as use a reserve. Soulbid doesn't charge a fee for a reserve, it could, I have coded all of the mechanics in to do so but Hey! why copy eBay completely. So Phil, I have given everybody 3 completely free of charge listings to use. Why don't you take advantage of that and try it out, I for one will look forward to bidding on your Magnetics that you have started for £10 no reserve I think you will see then what a difficult situation I am in. Perhaps I'm a bit too expensive but you or other sellers on Soulbid may not be. Everything has to start somewhere. Right I'm away now to write a tome for the appropriate Forum topic where I'll be glad to answer any questions, criticisms good or bad and generally fight my corner. Thanks for your comments Dave But that's the point I don't want to be the only seller, I've written it so that everybody can use it, if you don't want to use reserves it's up to you, you don't have to use them, again you can post 3 records completely free of charge, I'll be delighted to see what you post Dave and how much you start them at. I never understand why people use RESERVE ??? Surely the word reserve in any auction is the minimum you will accept for the said item I've lost count of the records i've tried to win on ebay and came away frustrated because there was a reserve.A reserve requires more than one person to push up the bid ,because of the bid increment system. Why not just set the starting price as the reserve ?? That way people know what your bottom price is .It's not like its a big secret anyway ,soon as the reserve is met we all know waht it was. Most people on here know current values and ,Yes ,we are trying to score a bargain. If your record ,for argument sake ,is £200 in manships guide ,it's safe to say your not gonna get that on ebay,so set it at £100 start and ,if people know it regularly goes for £150 then they will bid between £100 and the £150 mark. Ebay fees obviously dictate how we set our start price ,i:e the higher the start price the more they charge ,buy it now facility costs etc ,etc. Sure we all want a fair price for our records so why risk putting em on for 99p start price and risk losing a fortune. I must admit i took one look at this and the items for sale, saw the reserve prices and thought ,Naa im not bothered ,because theres not gonna be any bargains here. Might as well have put em on here with realistic"SET SALE " prices imho. best of luck with you sales Nev Link to comment Social source share

Starting price, as you say, makes far more sense. I don't think it's even a case of trying to get a bargain as such, auctions allow things to sell for what the current market and popularity allows, a reserve (or even a starting price sometimes) is more about what a seller thinks they should be getting for it. Two things aren't always the same. I've looked on SoulBid and i think it's a great idea and a nice alternative to ebay, but i couldn't help thinking i was looking thorugh someone's prized collection and they wouldn't part with anything except at top dollar. This isn't Daz's fault as such because i suppose if we start using it, as he says, things will chnage. I'll probably be using by free three slots at least in the future. Good luck with it. Dazz
Nev, Matt, Pete Dave et all I appreciate your comments. I'm in the middle of writing a tome for another thread at the moment so we can hopefully debate it in the correct place. Can someone close this tread or tell me how to and I can go somewhere else to talk about reserves. Link to comment Social source share
