SteveM Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Guy was good, Russ said what you would expect, but while that Barry K. O'Barma bloke went of at a bit of a tangent he made a lot of sense, especially when he said 70's definitely had a place on the Northern scene and that Bill (?) Bush was sh*t.

Maark Posted September 10, 2008 Author Posted September 10, 2008 Take it the Rugby mention was your email Mark? Yeah..... not sure if it was a wise move in retrospect if the place fill up with tourists.... but I just wanted to hear a mention of a current nighter and not just yesteryear and as Rugby is on this Saturday........
Guest Simon Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Just listened to it, pretty much as i expected. Dustbin Stanley totally out of touch, thinks that all rare soul djs play rare cr*p to empty dancefloors! "There's some rubbish played these days" (erm yes Russ, if the cap fits)!! Mary Fox thinks Duffy is NS etc, totally clueless! "A lot of rubbish gets played just cause it's rare","You can't argue with Duffy she's a class act". Guy Hennigan spoke total sense, finger on the pulse mentioning the European scene etc. Simon

Guest in town Mikey Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 (edited) I thought it was Ok. usual stuff rushed in, and no chance for expanding on the oft repeated questions. More proof that northern soul doesnt need to be in the public eye. IMO of course Nice to hear Rob Holmes get the last word....no change there then heh heh. Edited September 10, 2008 by in town Mikey

Well, at the risk of sounding a total creep Sian ...... you've more than paid me and all the other Rugby regulars by sticking your financial neck on the block for so long in the early years so that we have a great night to attend. Ernie Andrews Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Thought the guy who has to do with the film was brain dead - Question -Is the film about Wigan casino/ Northern soul ? (cannot remember the exact words but along thos lines) Answer" Well its about life in the 70s - Typical politicians answer - So Why has it been called "Souled out" then you moron! And of course they have decided to to use KEB Darge as their musical expert! for the soundtrack - If it comes out on cd will it have the label description for each record EMI acetate / Acetate/acetate - Etc ETc As for Terry Christian NAh lets not go there! If they wanted a radio personality who was into it back then in abig way and still is then why not link to Stuart Cosgrove or someone like that! As for Mary Fox next she will be saying any bloody one who sings something uptempo and happens to sound and look like Dusty Springfield is a northern soul artist. Bye the way I actually quite enjoyed it! I thought Barak Obama was gonna sing Move on up or something!
Guest Brian Ellis Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Gotta agree with the Mary Fox Comment..My dog knows more about northern than she does..sheppards crook for her.... Heard this yesterday. The Mary Fox comment re Duffy was totally crass. My understanding was that when she started her Radio Stoke NS show she knew the square root of naff all about the music and had to have some local soulies to help her put together a playlist for the shows. Yet yesterday she was virtually saying she'd been into it since she was a schoolgirl! What's that all about?

Guest JJMMWGDuPree Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 I gave up listening to Mary Fox's show when she kept trying to educate us into 'Something a bit different'. Yeah, Mary, there's nothing wrong with something a bit different on a show called 'Northern Soul'. On Bizarro World. She gets two hours a week to play northern soul and she wastes time playing Duffy's 'Mercy' even though it's on saturation play on every radio station in Britain except for Classic FM (Probably). And then she tries to convince us that it's northen soul. If she can point to just one element of that record that bears any relationship whatsoever with any one element from any one of the myriad records that go to make up northern soul I'll buy her a cup of tea. My only problem was that I couldn't quite identify what kind of music Mercy actually was. Today I found out. I was ignoring the ads on telly as usual when I heard a tune and found myself singing Mercy to it. The tune was 'Falling' by Connie Francis, one of my favourite records from my infancy. It's official. Mercy isn't NS, it's Rock'n'Roll! Don't argue with me. I'm old.

Mary Fox is embarrassing - Delia Smith does Northern Soul Most of the records she plays that aren't obvious motown are picked out by local collectors from what I can gather..(oops just realised Brian just said that)...wonder if any of them are on SS and can verify this? Duffy isn't a soul singer by any stretch of the imagination. Its a catchy pop record and she's an average singer trying to sound like Dusty Springfield. Nothing special but not totally offensive. But if Mary Fox thinks Mercy is NS then she may as well play Lulu records on her show (and that would be preferable imo!!) Wonder if we see any extra bodies this weekend?

Oi - leave our Delia out of this, actually you're not far off coz there's a doo at Norwich City ground on 27th September. Nice plug for ya Chris - but why did you pull the Legion night? Mark C
Guest northernsoulboy6 Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 The celebs they spoke to have their own career advancement agenda and no nothing about the scene. I have never seen Terry at an alnighter and i have been to a few... .
Pete S Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Mary Fox's influences can be heard on a show she does on one of the local stations where they play 'youth club classics' - Fascinations, Showstoppers, Stax, Tamla Motown etc. Same as a lot of us who grew up at the same time, these were the records spun at our local discos, before we knew what Northern Soul was.
Guest Byrney Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Gotta agree with the Mary Fox Comment..My dog knows more about northern than she does..sheppards crook for her.... Kind of got the idea when she was asked about the Jades that she didn't really know it Again Guy made sense, always makes me laugh as well when you get people phoning into these kind of shows to say they went to Wigan, Torch etc and then the Kings Hall as if nowt happened in between
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 i will have to listen to this and see what all the fuss is about plus Duffy is no way Northern soul and as for Mary Fox i bet even i could do a better show then her and i am 27. I wouldn't need no expert to say play this and that when i can quite rightly dig out funk, northern, modern and so on for a nice soul show ok maybe cut the funk out but i could stick pick it. plus one question if you read this what is the best show on the radio for soul there seems to be so many on local radio and the net is there a really definitive one
