Most Expensive?

I had 3 John and the wierdest and left two more at the same shop because the bloke was a nutter.

I don't think I've ever been to shop where the owner wasn't a nutter. This record collecting thing seems to attract some very odd characters.

There's rumoured to be one in this country with a Motown collector, again rumours. Reg Bartlett was acknowledged as having one of if not the best collection of Motown, he may well have had one, who knows. I was told Berry Gordy bought his collection, dunno how true that is????

Pretty sure when Ron Murphy got his collection, through one of the pressing plant employees I believe, he said just six were pressed and later ordered to be destroyed with one copy foir Motown's files. Two are definitely known to have not been destroyed so it stands to reason that others could be out there.

Think I've mentioned this before on here but can confirm 100% that there is a Motown collector in London who owns a copy of FW as I've seen it.

Guy who owns it has got no interest in the Northern/Rare Soul scene whatsoever & he also said he knows of a guy in the States who also has a copy. Can't confirm this but can't see why he would lie about it.

Did he play it to confirm its the record, if you have every Motown record except one would you fake it?

I wonder how the FW sounds, yes you have the master tape but what's the mix on the single and how much factory noise has the disc got. Druel tongue.gif .

Is that Tom credon the detroit collector

I believe it was Berry Gordy who bought Reg bartlett's collection. I'm fairly certain he didn't have the frank wilson.

I might add the Soul Incorporated 45 as being pretty pricey. I remember i Sold mine for $100 maybe 20 years ago thinking i could find another copy thinking it might be common.

viwed as quite a tough record in the UK - you sitting on copies?

no but I've had it twice, which is two more copies than most of the 30 records on the list. I guess it could just be a coincidence though. There are a lot of very tough records that aren't in the "top" most valuable list -- e.g. records that are both very rare and very well known, in demand, creating the high value.

Wasn't meant to be a top 30. But I can't seem to copy and paste a list from Excel into this forum because it all ends up jumbled together. I had to pick the "insert list" option which automatically numbered each line.

This was just a list of records that I think are hard to come by. I purposely chose some that I have seen for sale but don't own, and others that I personally own but have never seen for sale.

yeah, I knew it wasn't a total "top 30" as it didn't include don gardner, frank wilson, etc., I just meant I felt it was a hard record but not as hard as some of the other titles in the "top" list. At least the last couple of times I've seen it on ebay it's gone maybe ~$1000-$1500, most of the other titles would go much higher, plus I've seen it for sale more often than most of the other titles.

Malcolm Baumgart had a pretty comprehensive collection of US Motown with amazing regional and promo/release variations of most of the various logos' output. If there had been a copy of Frank Wilson in a collection in London he would have known about it I'm sure but he was adamant that the only copies in collections were those we've already mentioned here.

How many copies of Johnny Honeycutt are out there I've only ever seen 1 for sale and I bought it, just wondering as Dennis Edwards is mentioned as mega rare, Ive had 2 of these over the last 20 years and have seen at least 3 on ebay and Jm had a issue copy on his auction a couple of years ago which I think he owns himself, so I would say more than 10 easy but im not sure on the Johnny Honeycutt I know Mick H has one as he played it not so long back.

While i'm on a record I've been after for years is Wendell Watts - Kiss agood thing goodbye on reforee Ive only seen one about 6 mths back on Johns auction but I couldn't afford it as it got a bit out of control at the end. Anyone know if theres any more about.

Cheers Darren

Good call on the Johnny Honeycut: this was first played from the studio disc was it not. Actual release has got to be in the realm of less than five copies.

Going back to my earlier mention of The Inspirations on Breakthrough can anyone state how many copies of that are known to exist? Single figures again surely?

Maybe I sold mine too cheap then. But to be honest, very few people inquired about it when I had it for sale.

I know the lovely Mr & Mrs Willingham have got one. Or at least did have.

What about Terry Goodnight?

The more I learn about these rare records, the more I'm convinced that most of them aren't as rare as we once thought....the internet has opened up a window on the world. Money talks...and it seems that everytime a biggie goes for a large sum on one of the auctions....more copies suddenly appear.... ohmy.gif

Anyway, as far as my very limited knowledge is aware, the rarest record of them all is....THE CONTESSA - NEED YOUR LOVE - LAZ BAR.....one copy only....Guy Hennigan spin I think, and sold to Tim Brown....then sold on Tim's list.. :D ...but he can't remember who bought it. :)

Anyone know who owns it now? I would love to get my hands on it.... :D

Don't know the record myself - but I'm curious.

You'd love to get your hands on it because you really love the record?

Or because there's only one copy?

Because I love it Joan. Most of the records talked about in this thread are not my cup of tea. I would never buy a record I didn't love myself....I can send you a sound file if you like...live at Tony's Blackburn. Got it off Cliff.... :)

Like I said - just curious, especially after your 'Indication' comment :)

Yes please, I would love to hear it!

In fact, I would love to hear the whole tape if possible. Cheeky aren't I :D

There was a sound file on soul source Joan. Either Pat Brady or Guy spin, think it was a Pat spin. I'll dig the sound file out when I get the chance.

Sorry but I didn't record the whole tape, just the Contessa track, as I knew the other tunes. I'll pm it now...

Great record. Proper Norven. Not heard it out in years.

It's not the same group as on E surely?

just a thought, itsn't this thread about the most EXPENSIVE discs? and not about the rarest ones?

You're absolutely right Benji, my appologies for taking the thread off topic, sorry.

Where have you gone off topic Phil? Contessa must be one of the most expensive too if it came on the market so you've no need to apologise. Most of the records mentioned are the rarest on the scene, just happens that they are expensive too.

Little bit of topic but Mark Linton bought it from Pat and was playing covered as the The Twans from the days of Morecambe Pier til he sold it to Tim when he sold up to go to Los Angeles at the time of Shotts
