No one is trying to stop this event on this thread, they are just voicing their opinion that it's bad news for the rest of the scene. I think there is a sub genre of "northern soul", like newies, upfront, crossover, oldies..... "Baggy Northern", which is not to be mistaken for "oldies". Fans of "baggie northern", are not to be mistake with oldies fans. There are of course good records in the "Baggy northern" genre and even some "Baggy Northern" tunes can be found being played by DJs on the upfront, oldies and even crossover scenes, and of course the fashion of baggies and vests, although often worn as a uniform by "baggies northern" fans, is not in itself a sign that a person is a "baggie northern fan". So it's important to not tar wearers of traditional 'northern soul' wear with the 'baggies northern fan' brush. So, "Baggy Northern", as a genre, is hard to understand. You either get it, or you don't. It's a way of life, a true underground scene only understood or talked about by those on the inside. And with the emergence of this scene there have been associated problems. Such as "northern soul" DJs being asked to play "northern soul" by a fan of 'Baggy' when the tunes being played are in fact 'northern soul'. This is because for a 'Baggy', "northern soul" is a hijacked term, a mutation of it's original meaning. A 'baggy's' use of the word 'northern soul' is not what most others call 'Northern Soul', which is a record which has been played on the "northern soul scene" at some point. So, where can "Baggy Northern fans" be found for those wanting to spot and take notes? They are difficult to spot as they are a master of disguise. But here are a few pointers... They can normally be found around local 'northern soul' events in sports halls or village function rooms comparing their latest patch, mug or coaster acquisitions with other "Baggy Northern" fans. And he's a useful tip for serious Baggy spotters, they can often be attracted towards you by saying "Soul Sam, he's so shit, yes he is". They are not nocturnal creatures, so don't expect to spot them in their natural habitat in the early hours of the morning. By midnight they tend to settle down for a long sleep after they have consumed their favorite alcoholic tipple in large quantities. 'BAGGY NORTHERN'....I totally get it and have indeed been asked to play 'northern' on several occasions , when , in fact, I HAVE been playing a 'northern' record! One of my fellow dj's got asked to "play some f--king Northern, when, in fact, she already was. The people asking obviously had a 'BAGGY' understanding of the term and probably went to Wigan a couple of times in the 70's.
