I agree Tony, but there is a tendency to forget the dark side of WC & RW is guilty of glossing over this, as is the local authorities who all now seem to court the Casino myth, that was my real point really.....hope your well BTW.

Russ

Well yes it's a tourist thingy I guess for WBC. I mean there's not exactly much else in the town to see is there?

As for WC, yes you are right - a total dump - but great for music. Many younger members (or those that drifted away in the late 70s) won't know what happened in the end either when there were only 300-500 going on a sat night. Do you remember when it was closing? "We're closing - One final nighter" - cost a fortune to go as they hiked the prices up - but it meant we could be part of the "last ever" nighter. A few friends went. Then on the night Russ or someone announces "Just one more all nighter" next week, pay through the nose again you mug punters. Friends were shocked "we've been had" etc. Then 3 months later when Richard has got another allnighter in the town up they pop again "Oh we've managed to secure the Casino....for "just one more all nighter". F*ck that was not only embarrassing even then, it was a disgrace. I wrote about it at the time and never forgave the "powers that be" for taking everyone for idiots with these extra "last ever" allnighters. By now WIgan was well and truly buried, and all credibility had been lost.

spot on russ, part of the appeal of these early clubs was they're dodgey eliment......If you look back how many of em were shut for the same reason.........suppose it now suits the council to big up a place they once would have loved to close down, anyway if WC meant so much to em why didn't they have it totally refurbished and used for lots of civic events?

Cost Chris Burton about 34K to bring them over a few years ago. They were still massive in the late 90s aqnd could fill a hall anywehere in the USA.

Yeah and money well spent in my opinion---------- Incredible to see them perform. It cost Man city 34 million for Robinho so the Dells were a bargain wink.gif:thumbsup:

Don't know if Chris Burton made or lost on that venture but it was certainly a chance of a lifetime for fans in the UK to see them live

He actually lost a bit he told me after you add in DJs, Wales Wallace, venue hire, advertising etc , and it was a brave gamble on his part. But agree my favourite ever live soul night - just amazing.

Well if i told an 'outsider' i am into 'northern soul' or 'rare soul' or 'soul' and they instantly connected it to 'Wigans Ovation' or the northern soul dance or whatever else they percieve it to be, i could either be embarrassed, annoyed, irritated by their perception, or i could just smile agree with their ill informed ideas and just get on with living whats left of my life and let them get on with theirs, its too short to be harbouring lots of bitterness, and i always ask myself the same question, in the scheme of things 'does it really matter,? and i always come up with the same answer - not a jot!

Perhaps we can invite RW on here and do a IL now wouldnt that be fun

Part of me says bring it on......and I will be as polite to him as I have been to Ian - what is it with 70's big name DJ's and me??? laugh.gif But why would Russ want to come on here? He is not really part of the scene anymore - he just does his Wigan Casino memory nights. He's about as relevant to today's scene as the guy that makes Adidas Bags or the lady that sells Milkshakes at Kings Hall.

I never went to Wigan cause i wasn;t born and wish i had the chance. I would have gone to a shopping center for Northern soul night so i can hear the musc and see what it is like before i say what it really is.

As for overplayed i don't mind hearing some stuff that has been over played but also new stuff i don't know. I guess i could be one of those punters you moan at for always wanting the same request played but if it makes me happy and i hear it i ain't complaining. A lot of what i didn't know in Northern soul i heard at venues in Peterborough (to you lot likely over played) but for me at the first time of hearing (about 6 years ago or so) i didn't know the song one being Sugar Dumpling which i always want played out now.

Also what is wrong with a cafe with soul memorabillia in it. Stef in Peterborough has a Pizza place with glass tables which has records in it and pics and flyers on wall etc of soul music nothing wrong to me.

Why the venom?

Ok, I have been guilty, if thats the word,of pouring scorn on this event, and other 'oldie orientated' do's

So as to why? here goes...

I got into soul aged 13, with motown. I wanted to hear all I could as I thought it was the best music I had ever heard, so I learnt all I could. Hooked up with some older guys who took me to local clubs where I heard stuff I'd not heard before. Still not satisfied, I graduated to Leeds Central soul nites then onto niters at 15, still wanting to hear all I could, because to me, if you love the music, you want to hear everything you possibly can. Then onto Wigan, Cleethorpes, allways for the new sounds. That didn't mean I didn't like the stuff I had already heard, how could I, it was brilliant! But..there was still so much more I hadn't heard. After Wigan, local do's plus Sheffield niters, Rotherham. Bradford etc, missed Stafford, as I was married then and money was tight, but still attended local do's and got to Morcambe, Stafford once, 100 club, etc. late 80's/90's saw Allanton, 100club, Drolylesden and lots of others I can't be bothered to list. Always tho' listening out for something new. 2000 onwards 100, club, Wilton, Middleton, etc etc.

Now, where were these oldies loving 'right on keep the faith' baggie wearers in the dark times of the 80's?

where were they in the 90's? where were they up 'til a few years ago, when suddenly they spring up in numbers at oldies venues all over the place? They don't seem to care that the scene kept going after Wigan, they don't seem to care that 100's of brilliant tunes were discovered in the intervening years, they just want to hear the same oldies they did back in the day and act as tho' they are so fervent and passionate about the music. To me that's shit, sorry but it is. It's dragging the scene backwards without a second thought for those that kept it going. It's like undoing all the hard work people put in over the intervening years. They don't know, don't want to know, as if the 35 years after Wigan never happened.

That's what pisses me off, closed minds, backward attitudes, "look at me i'm into Northern Soul See.. I have badges and mugs and clocks and coasters and underpants and baggy trousers" As if they need these things to prove it.

And you ask, "Why the venom?" The scene was doing very nicely, thank you very much, before they re-appeared, as it had done for the last 35 years. Yet now we have the oldies brigade, in probably greater numbers than those who carried on for years, dragging it back, and those that see a quick buck to be made, cashing in on them for all they are worth.

Venom? I wish I had a nuke!

Oh and as for the post,

Could I just point out a few hypocrisies and contradictions here!

You want the 'oldies' to 'clear off' and start their own nostalgia scene!

Shouldn't that be the other way round? They've been there since day one, the rare scene hasn't. Why should a well established 'brand' make way for a less popular one?

What rubbish!

No they havn't been there since day one, they f**ked off and left us to it thru the '80's and 90's

And yes, the rare scene has always been there! That's what the scene has always been about! Rare records that no-one else has, cover-ups, exclusives, one-offs, being the first of your gang to get the latest tune! If it wasn't about rare records why the f**k did we travel hundreds of miles to hear 'em if we could have just switched on the radio?

I despair, I really do! :)

Oh dear, very bitter, have you ever stopped to think that those you so bitterly criticise don't give a flyin fukc how you feel?

So is it not better to enjoy what you enjoy? leave whoever to get on with it, theres no medals for service to be awarded, just a very short life to make the most of,

Look where you're going not where you have been, theres no pecking order for history,

Chill Trev, you can't change what folk enjoy, and why should you?

Just do your thing and let everyone else do theirs :)

I will, don't you worry, but when you love a scene, and the music for the best part of 38ish years, it's hard not to try and protect it from the 'nostalgia virus' that seems to be eating it alive!

So by your view, if you pop round another Soulies house for a brew and they stick your brew on a Mel Britt coaster then they obviously appreciate soul music less than yourself?

That actually says it all, on the whole they're fricking clueless & Peter, if you dont care, live n let live blah, blah, blah why are you being sooooooooo defensive.

People have a passion for the 'true' scene, it wont go away, Im in this for the long haul & when the souless have all f*cked off again, I/we will be still here, still dancing, still listening, still searching for new & exciting tunes, supporting promoters & DJ's who make a difference & living the life. Trev great post mate, maybe one day these buffoons will realise what its actually all about, but Im not holding my breath............in fact the sooner the bubble bursts again, the sooner we can get on with it, without being lambasted constantly about NS ethics by the neandathol contingent, living thier one night at Wigan Casino in 1976 over & over again & being a constant source of embarrassment.

And Peter, by doing 'their thing', it reflects on us all, we all get tarred with the same brush mate.............I know that I really shouldnt bother about any of this, Im not nasty or malicious & Im sure most that know me would describe me as friendly & personable............, but Im passionate about this & hurts me, that this part of the scene trivialise & degrade the scene in the eye of the casual observer from outside of our world.

Agree 100% Russ. I really hope the attendance is very poor and that we can bury this Wigan Casino revival bandwagon for once and for all - these days it is just an embarrasment and a poor parody of anything whatsoever to do with northern soul. I know that will upset the "live and let live" brigade but there you go.

Russell, i'm not being defensive, i have nothing to defend, and i don't really care what brush i get tarred with, i don't really care what you or anyone else thinks of me, what i do care about is that i am allowed to carry on doing what i enjoy, and everyone else can do their thing too,

I havn't got time Russell to worry about observers from the outside world, i'm to busy getting on with making the most of the time i have, my social life is for pleasure, i'm not going to spend any of it fretting about things that can't be changed, ive been around a while (not that it matters) and i will be around for the duration, in the meantime i intend having a jolly good time,

I can't really get me head round the way RW is being battered on the other thread.

If anybody has the RIGHT to hold an Anniversery, Re-Union, call it what you will, it's him.

Unfortunately, however well intentioned, he does seem to do it so Spectaculary badly.

Had he got a decent sized venue, in the Wigan area- Monaco say or similar, I would have probably gone for a bit nostaglia, a bit like I went to Blackpool for The Mecca thing I wouldn't want it every week, but then who would?

How many events over the next month or two will be calling themselves "Wigan Memories or ReUnions or whatever.

How many oldies nights( ) are there that will not play Wigan Tunes???????????

Anyway, RW is not the only former "Big" DJ to use CD's now is he?

Still living on his reputation?, Am I bovvered?

Don't suppose many folk talk to Geoff Hurst without mentioning 1966

I will not be going, and those that are going will not change my life one way or the other.

I do wish he could get it right though.

Tony

P.S.(post script, before the paranoia sets in)

I wonder how "One Night in the Padham Pigeon Fanciers Club" would have gone down?

RW is a consumer and nothing else. He consumes and attaches himself to ANYTHING to do with Wigan Casino. The guy hasn't contributed to the scene since 81! He knows nothing about the music (ive had first hand experience djing next to him with his cd's and bootlegs!), in fact he has NO interest in it! ALL the time that the play was on he was calling for free tickets and guest passes etc, yet when push came to shove and we needed money to go into rehearsal (2nd tour) he was no where to be seen and Wigan Council wanted nothing to do with it. Unfortunately he has managed to persuade the writer of OUTIW (who never even went! :D and who isn't even into the music!)) to make it into a film! Russ, of course will be advising, so we are in for a treat  . RW has managed to turn running a club for 8yrs, into a lifelong career and he seems willing to compromise ANYTHING in order to maintain that career. He wanted me to produce memorabilia etc to make more money from the play and im sure the film already has a t shirt and a mug (apart from Mr Martin! ) REALLY, what has he got to do with 'soul', the scene or 'life' in the 21st century?

Yeah but like paul s & you yourself have said theres no denying that it was a great place with great sounds, its just that there are certain unsrupulous people who just cant grasp its the past gone finished, & cant be recaptured, & to cap it off end up making desperate sorry sad ptiyfull attempts at trying to go back 30 yrs trying to recapture 1978 when they were at the sharp end

The guy that is running the gig regardless of your posts couldn't give a monkies toss what you think, say or do. So why waist time on giving him some much needed publicity? They came for the R&Bers, and i did nothing... They came for the rare soulers, and i did nothing... They came for the modern soulers and the Y2Kers and still i did nothing... then started turning up at my soul night and moaning that no one plays the 'classics oldies anymore' and there was no one left to defend me... :)

I just don't understand this 'do nothing', 'say nothing', 'why waste your time', 'why even bother' attitude. No one is trying to stop this event on this thread, they are just voicing their opinion that it's bad news for the rest of the scene.

You walk away if you want mate, i'll stay and argue for what i believe in. Some people just don't give a toss

Hmmmm .I know lets line them all up up against the wall and shoot the fockers! No better still lets snipe them from the rooftops---you'll know which ones they are--they wear baggy trousers

:wicked:

your right.....but we travelled hundreds of miles......for lots of reasons...not just the music....how about the whole cool and underground package.......do get your point though. yes.gif

Unfortunately he has managed to persuade the writer of OUTIW (who never even went! unsure.gif and who isn't even into the music!)) to make it into a film! Russ, of course will be advising, so we are in for a treat  . RW has managed to turn running a club for 8yrs, into a lifelong career and he seems willing to compromise ANYTHING in order to maintain that career. He wanted me to produce memorabilia etc to make more money from the play and im sure the film already has a t shirt and a mug (apart from Mr Martin! ) REALLY, what has he got to do with 'soul', the scene or 'life' in the 21st century?

you can't pretend wigan never happened,it was a great nighter playing great soul sounds or at least it was when i went, like everything else all good things come to an end,

tell you what lets pretend it's still open.......how about that!......see you there sat night :wicked:

You know what, i'd have more respect for someone holding a soul night at Sandbach services than a shopping centre in Wigan.

At least Sandbach is still there! :wicked:

It IS still open. that's why there's the 35th anniversary on the original site of the hallowed Casino toilets. It lives on in my soul and you soul police anorak anal types cannot stop me and thousands of others from enjoying it. It will live forever in our hearts. Long live Russ - the original soul pioneer. Just because you don't dress like a proper soulie don't belittle those of us that do. Live and let live, northern soul - it's "A way of life", so stop digging us out with your elitist jibes "Keep the faith" Tezza - and get up to the "Heart of Soul" - you know you want to!

Pass the booze back - hick :wicked:

Part of me says bring it on......and I will be as polite to him as I have been to Ian - what is it with 70's big name DJ's and me??? But why would Russ want to come on here? He is not really part of the scene anymore - he just does his Wigan Casino memory nights. He's about as relevant to today's scene as the guy that makes Adidas Bags or the lady that sells Milkshakes at Kings Hall.

Ok but it would be good to read the grilling James T would give him :wicked:

They came for the R&Bers, and i did nothing... They came for the rare soulers, and i did nothing... They came for the modern soulers and the Y2Kers and still i did nothing... then started turning up at my soul night and moaning that no one plays the 'classics oldies anymore' and there was no one left to defend me... :wicked:

i may be wrong but i reckon the shopping centre fans are the people who maybe went once towards the end of the casinos life or never made it at all, but think they did :wicked: ..............not folk like me who gave up the ghost in 75 and had a break ,or stayed in the real scene but moved on . i have no wish to relive something i can no longer remember biggrin.gif ezzie
