Guest MattB Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Anyone seen any of these for sale recently? Never seen one on ebay, think there may have been one or two on sales lists here, just wondering if anyone has bought one or seen one go recently and for what price? Are there a fair few about? Whats the condition like generally? Ta. Matt

Dean Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Not had time to look back through but I'm sure the Ellen and the Shandells one on JM only went for under £200, I can remember being disappointed I'd not gone for it thinking it would go too high for my wallet at the time. I got one (Dry Well) of ebay (Ex) a couple of years ago for £84. I did get another (Ex) about a year ago for under £40 and sold it on for £90. Played it at The Attic recently and someone was telling me about an album track version by The Hollies? I can't confirm that, and it was towards the end of the night so I could be remembering that wrong - anyone know? Dean

Dean Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Snap! Lesson learned Trevski, usually bid now just in case, even tho I don't expect to get them on my budget. Would have happily paid out for that one, great dancer . . . . . . . . if only I could dance!
Ste Henderson Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Good call, excellent record, paid a ton for mine mint off here I think about a year ago.. They are about though I have seen them on the bay. Steve
Sebastian Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Played it at The Attic recently and someone was telling me about an album track version by The Hollies? I can't confirm that, and it was towards the end of the night so I could be remembering that wrong - anyone know? I don't know of a version by The Hollies but... "Gypsy" is written by Justin Hayward, he was a member of The Moody Blues and their version entitled "Gypsy (Of A Strange And Distant Time)" is included on the "To Our Children's Children's Children" LP from 1969. That Dry Well version is an out-and-out psych tune to my ears.

That Dry Well version is an out-and-out psych tune to my ears. I came into Northern Soul from a psych direction and when I first heard Gypsy-Dry Well, I was amazed it was classed as a Soul spin. However, it's a great tune whichever pidgeon hole one cares to bung it into and I'd love to hear it played out.
Albert Petit Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Thats is northern soul????? sounds like a Jefferson Airplane...in my opinion... Cheers! Anyone seen any of these for sale recently? sister dawn Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Thats is northern soul????? sounds like a Jefferson Airplane...in my opinion... Cheers! an extremely powerful northern record through and through one that commanded a full floor as a fast and furious dancer that was a sight to behold.

Baz Atkinson Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 perfect example of Northern Soul record not being a soul record Id agree on that Padded cell springs to mind ,oh and alot of the stuff spun at the casino before Searling the messiah came on lol!! BAZ A
Albert Petit Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 an extremely powerful northern record through and through one that commanded a full floor as a fast and furious dancer that was a sight to behold. but where is the soul? Nice song for a furry psiquedelic people...l
Philippe Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 perfect example of Northern Soul record not being a soul record I'd say the same. That's one reason -also with the astronomical prices- why I'll never understand N.S.
Pete S Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Thats is northern soul????? sounds like a Jefferson Airplane...in my opinion... Cheers! It does actually - sounds very like Grace Slick singing. No way is this worth more than £50.

macca Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 (edited) Seen here on a list of Soul Sam spins for March 79 at St. Ives. https://martysbox.tripod.com/id30.htm He's also playing magnetics 'lady in green', sharpettes 'lost in a world of a dream' & don ray 'born a loser. A weird time to be on the Soul scene. Don't be suprised Albert. All part of this very oddball scene mate. :-) Edited September 4, 2008 by macca
Quinvy Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Karl Heard played it at the last Burnley...it does sound good played on a big system...when I heard the organ riff, I thought it was House of the rising sun...

Peter99 Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Anyone got a clip of the sharpettes? Julie Driscoll is awesome, indian rope man is a great record! Hi Matt The Sharpettes is posted in Refosoul - I can't do the link sorry. It's there though - I just played it. Memories of dancing to this whilst completely mashed up!
Guest MattB Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Haha, we all love a good flashback of being "Chonged" dancing to great records! Indian ropemans a hard 45, the Auger LP its on is great too!
Maark Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 It is indeed! Indian Rope Man...... nice one Trevski, never heard that one before Reminds me (the into at least) of 'I'm a man" by Chicago.
Pete S Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I like the Sharpettes. Sharpettes is brilliant Detroit soul but nothing to with psychedlia apart from having the word dream in the title!

22ndsoul Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Would love to here that tape, any chance I'll try to get it put on to cd for you and let you have a copy ,but it is live and sound quality reflects it's age. Also a young Soul Sam and Arthur fenn doing their stuff
Peter99 Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Sharpettes is brilliant Detroit soul but nothing to with psychedlia apart from having the word dream in the title! I used to be physco'd up to fook when I used to dance to this Pete!
Simsy Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 "Pushin too hard" by The Seeds....... there's another. Great dancer Dancer? The Seeds? Couldn't dance Northern style to that. Well maybe, but it'd be fookin funny to see! (Not you personally Maaaaaark btw) Fine record Dry Well. Zero soul content though and for that reason, I'm out. ps, Weather's a bit shite mate, ave a word.
Maark Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 (edited) Many a time in my kitchen Simsy! Lol. Edited September 5, 2008 by Maark

22ndsoul Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 How much would the Sharpettes fetch today? Got one of the boots with the very bad quality recording. An original on sound city went through ebay about three months ago, fetched around $200.

Guest MattB Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 That version has a certain charm but not a patch on Dry Well.
Guest MattB Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 That's the story i heard that it was a cover up at allnighters!
