Harrogatesoul Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Not sure if this has been discussed before.. Just thinking of the recent Motown Cellarfull series etc with unissed Motown. Has there or (will there) be similar material from the likes of the Chess & Atlantic catalogue? There has to have been so much recorded during the 60s/70s etc. will any see the light of day? There has to be more surely from the sheer depth and variety labels such as the Chess group had? Jap releases only? Or long since deleted CD's? Also interested in the likes of Alston & Glades if anyone knows any info.

There are odd Chess tracks here and there like Kent's alternative version of Terry Callier 'Look At Me Now' but no specific reissue programme that I know of.
Harrogatesoul Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 Didn't know about the Atlantic fire Ady, Cheers for that. A crying shame considering the depth & breadth of artists the label had. I would have laid money on there being a ton of material in the can at the Chess group as well as major indies etc. Rich

Unfortunately, I don't think there's unreleased Raynard Miner stuff as his studio got broken into and all the masters / acetates stolen (this happened in the 60s).
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I've been through Michel Ruppli's Chess discographies quite thoroughly over the past year or so. I'd say that there are enough promising looking titles to make up maybe two or maybe three CDs worth of unissued 60s soul. Being an indie, Chess tended to release more of what they recorded than some of the majors did, even if they simply ended up bunging out session leftovers on the B-sides of much later records. And quite often they simply recorded two song sessions (so you can stop fantasising about unissued Joy Lovejoy recordings right now!) Mind you, promising looking titles might not necessarily equate to finished masters, or even good tracks for that matter....
Harrogatesoul Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 Thanks Tony - Knew you'd pick up on this! I guess from an indie point of view it makes sense to release the material financially. From your own point of view is there still material in cans from other big labels such as your Brunswicks etc? How strong is the market these days for this? Thanks for the info too Boba - What is it with fires & theft???!! Rich
