I watched this for the first time last night after hearing loads about it!

Just wondered if anyone knew who the guy in the blue jumper with the beard was? Not for any particular reason....just out of intrest.

Dave Withers, DJ'd at Yate, Wigan and finally Stafford, before hanging up his gloves. He discovered, along with his buddy Rod Shard so many tunes we now love, also one of the first dj's to get all the un-released motown stuff. One of the nicest guys you gonna meet, now lives on the east coast of the U.S.

God the mention of that programme has just brought back some memories. I remember when it was going to be televised, I thought it would be a good idea for my parents to watch it with me in the hope that they would get a better understanding of why Wigan Casino had become my third home (first one being home and second one being home of "adoptive sis" and fellow Casino-ite) as, throughout my adolescence, I, like many others, was totally misunderstood by my elders (my big bruv's pet name for me was "the little Northern weirdo").

Well the three of us sat down to watch it and I was absolutely mortified because I didn't think the programme did the place justice. There was me trying to justify myself and there was them taking the piss with comments like "So you cause all this trouble at home just to a shithole like that eh", "What enjoyment can you possibly get in a place like that full of juvenile delinquents", "Are you sure they don't sell alcohol there because those kids are definitely not normal", "Are you right in the head", "Don't know how you can listen to that drivel, it's the devil's music", "Right that's the end of it, you'll definitely not be going there ever again, you can kiss that dump goodbye" (Yeah right, like I wasn't there the following Satdee and every other Satdee for God know's how long):thumbsup:

As for fellow Casino-ite, she was holed up in her bedroom practising her dancing (probably stomping with the record playing at 33) and forgot the programme was on! Oh how I wished I'd been with her

Happy days :D

Dave also had a very impressive knowledge of the scene too !! I used to use him as an oracle back in the day  , top geezer and lovely sheepskin coat

Dave used to also run a market stall in Aflecks Palace in Manchester city centre, used to havce some cracking tunes for sale and at a decent price, also sold his tapes full of stuff i'd never heard before. Bought Danny Moore off hima coupleof years back for $40. Great guy.

Wow, i really enjoyed watching the documentry. Mainly to see if i recognised anyone (i didn't! ) & i just generally wondered how many that were featured in it are still involved in the scene today. Daves beard was the main point of interest though i must admit!

Late 80s early 90s I was living in Manchester but had gotten into the live indie scene. I was in Afleks Palace and passed a stall selling records so broused through. I had hair halfway down my back, would heve been dressed in a weird but wopnderful way. I drew an occasional scowl so looked up. Dehind the guy (If it was Dave, I didnt recognise him if it was) were some records on the wall. One was a beautiful yellow Anne Sexton for about 330. I asked him if he could hand it over. he says

"What do you want it for?"

"Cos I want to buy it" came my reply.

Still got it. I nearly sold it earlier this year, but the label is so simple but captivating.

It was more likely to have been Rod.

are you thinking of "earwaves" ?

I can't remember the name but it was one of the shops at the front as you went in up the steps (trying to think back when it was the old corn exchange now)...used to get a lot of LPs there. He sold all kinds of stuff but a lot of Northern. Around the mid 80s?

Agreed, but a thing that I never quite understood, as back in the day me and all my fellow soul girls liked a clean shaven baby-faced slick soul boy...soul and beards just seemed so very wrong :D

Perhaps you would care to enlighten me as it still puzzles me to this day :lol:

Beards will never go out of fashion...and I never have any trouble with the opposite sex

I think Dave would be surprised to learn that he wasnt living in New Jersey anymore (about 20 minutes from me). He's actually DJing with Mr Fine Wine tonight at Botanica in New York City.

Ooh, could you tell him how impressed i am at his beard please when you see him next!

correct ! I was there , Steve Foreman , bus all the way up from Aldershot , one of many times , and I remember people boycotting the dance floor as this was still underground at the time . Ray Lyons and me kept away from the cameras for some reason (wish I didn't now) but I think I've seen myself in the out takes but the truth is I don't think I'd recognise me anyway really . I remember people saying that they didn't realise that the floor was white ? No one danced until they played the top tune at the time , was it Judy Street ??? God the memories faded
