The Austin Record Convention, October 3/4/5, i quite fancy going over for this, never been before, still not sure if my budget will allow the trip but just wondered if anyone else is going. I've been to the States on record buying trips before, but this always seems to be the biggest "under one roof" event.

The Austin show's seen better days, Brett. A few years ago it moved from a big auditorium in the centre of the city to a location just out of town, and it's never been the same since. These days Allentown has more vinyl and particularly more 45s and 78s. And the Utrecht Record fair is considerably bigger if you're looking for the "All Under One Roof" experience...

There are a few dealers at Austin who don't price their records on their sleeves, wait to see what sort of accent is asking for them and then proce them accordingly. I generally go with a local mate and I always get him to buy anything I want from those dealers, having been burned in the past.

But I have to say that Austin's been good to my record collection in all sorts of ways and if you've never been before I'm sure you'll have a great time and come back with a few finds, at least.

Austin is also the greatest city on the planet and even if you don't buy a single record you'll have a fab time there!

There seems to be a bit of politics surrounding this Years event, but we're used to that are't we. Some dealers aren't going apparently, after a bit of falling out - but this is all information I've heard 2nd/3rd hand but before you commit to a flight you might want to contact the organiser and get a dealer list just to reassure yourself that it's gonna be busy - which I'm sure it will.

Hi Tony thanks for the info, when is the Utrecht fair ?, Holland would be a lot cheaper than the US.

Hi Tony thanks for the info, when is the Utrecht fair ?, Holland would be a lot cheaper than the US.

Utrecht is a twice a year thing, too - the winter one usually falls on the second or third weekend in November. You can get the details online - just type in Utrecht Record Fair or similar and you'll find the right link.

Obviously being a European fair the prices aren't going to be so cheap but the comepnsation is that there are always lots of lovely things like impossibly hard to get French EPs and stuff that you don't get in the States.

Utrecht's a fantastic city, too - especially where restaurants are concerned.

If you go, there are plenty of hotels within walking distance of Jaarbeurs, which is where the fair is held. I'd recommend the Park Plaza - it's not especially cheap but it's the nearest and quite a few of the visiting dealers stay there so there's always someone in the bar to have a chinwag with! There's also a fantastic antiques and bric-a-brac market that you have to go through to get to the record fair, and that's well worth allowing a bit of time for a look round.

Woth noting too that Easyjet have just announced their winter flights thsi weekend and have a bit of a sale on at the moment, so you might get a deal on that if you commit now...

If all goes to plan then I should be there. I'm booked to be working in Houston for three weeks so intend to spend that weekend in Austin. I've been to Austin before but not to the convention. Anyone up for a few beers?

Cheers Tony your the man, just been to the Utrecht site, thats the one for me, manalive it's huge, hopefully get a few mates onboard make a weekend of it.

Once again thanks for your insights, one of the great things about soul source is the chance to ask questions to folks who have been there and done it, great stuff. Still might do the spring 2009 Austin trip, almost like a Grail quest for me (plus chance to save some coin).

If you like Italian food, make sure you eat in the Il Pozzo, which is one of the many restaurants on the lower level of the Oudegracht, the main canal through Utrecht. The best Italian food I've had outside of Italy!

There's also a fantastic Moroccan restaurant almost opposte the Vredenburg, between two Indian restaurants - one of which is very good and the other of which is so-so, but I can't remember which is which!

There are a few collectors shops in town, too, but most of the dealers will have moved their good stuff over to Jaarbeurs for the Record Show and, indeed, the best one - Da Capo, which is also on the Oudegracht - doesn't even bother opening the collectors' basement over that weekend.

I had planned to go again myself this year, but it falls on the same weekend as "Rhythm Riot" which is a 'must go' event for me. Still more for you to buy in my absence, eh?

I've been toying with the idea of going to Utrecht. I Know a few people who go every year and eulogise about it being an Aladins cave of delights.

I might go and treat myself to a few early christmas presents.

Ive been going there for years now and although some fantastic records have been found there the pickings are few and far between the last few years. All the european dealers have the price guides and although the place is massive you'll find very few stalls with any rare soul stuff it's mainly pop stuff and cd's now plus most of the bargins go on the preveiw day[friday]

Hi Brett,

Spent 3 days at the show last year mate - & while I agree with what Tony has said in that it has obviously seen better days, I still came back with a great selection of stuff as I know Baz & Gaz did as well. It's the usual story - nothing big at a bargin price when you drop the English accent, out comes Manships guide & up goes the price. However, if you're looking for mid tempo & ballads then it's great. Take a player along & enjoy !

Good shout Brett as I'm hopefully going back over with Mark Houghton so I can feel a beer or two coming on ! There's also s'posed to be a really good place in San Antonio accoring to Gaz Simon - apparently both him & Baz spent about 3 days going through stuff & pulled out loads of things !

Holland is a better bet at the moment I would have thought & if Tony's advising you to try there then I certainly would.

Austin as a city is bloody incredible Brett,i am definetly going back next year and incorporating Memphis also on the trip!!! the fair is good imho for mid ranged mid priced stuff, the dealers like to haggle etc so no harm in that! I cant argue with Tony Rounces view as it was my first trip to this one, still came back with all sorts of stuff, but as you know i am not a hardcore northern soul COLLECTOR ,i got lots of sweet, deep and tons of crossover, right up your street imho!

We done really well in San Antonio still got the address somewhere, its a good 4 hours from Austin anda great night out also,All in all id recommend just for the experience of Austin, the record fair is a great add on,if your serious givE me buzz, just pm me!!!

Am amazed that people are reccomending Utrecht for 45s as the couple of times I've been its been albums (admitingly very good)albums, albums.

And the only 45s of any significance in the "rare soul' kinda thing were from English dealers.

Apart from the odd Euro picture sleeve and they weren"t cheap.

...almost unbeliveably, Rich, my copy of the National Anthem Of Football, 'Let 'Em Come' (or 'Let 'En Come' as it says on the label) was purchased at the Utrecht show, from a Dutch Skinhead who specialised in Footie-related records!

You'll all have a great time and I will be envious.

Don't forget to look in the excellent Plato Records while you're there - just a regular shop, and all CDs, but it'll remind you of the way record shops used to be - big selection of Blues/R & B/Soul/60s Beat etc Cds in the basement, 'staff picks' highlighted on the wall, nice people behind the counter, a great place to while away half an hour or so...

Posted

Baz/Brett I would be up for this as well possibly, and certainly now I have heard its albums as am buying almost exclusively albums at moment, due to great value out there.

And my fluent German will really help since the Dutch all speak such perfect English they will never understand both your regional twangs

I own a store in town here in Austin. I've dealt with a quite a few of you guys on this board. I wanted to offer the invition:

Anyone on the board that wants to come to my party on Saturday, please come and bring a friend.

Last year we had an impromptu performance from Johnny D from Phoenix on the decks, an appearance from local celebrity Mr. Big as well as a few other recognizable record collectors, and a lot of fun.

I'll buy 72 beers or so and have ice available, the rest is up to you. we'll get going after dinner, probably about 9:30 or 10pm.

here is the key for you guys who are fist timers:

the store number is 512-447-1000. a lot of you have my cell number and i'm happy to give it to almost anyone who asks, but i'm not going to publish it publicly. i'm happy to help any out of towners to food or answer any questions you might have.
