Those that see it as a term for gritty down-home R&B style northern ('Dirty Northern' © Tony Smith) and those that have foccussed on the sexually explicit songs, which frankly I have always thought of as 'Horny Northern.' leev Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 In another thread Tony Smith has coined the phrase 'Dirty Northern' - my interpretation of this is gritty, hard, down home dance-music with none of the elegant orchestral production techniques of Philly etc. etc. Dirty Northern. Great term. I'll start with the old Detroit classic 'Sister Lee', by Singing Sammy Ward. His R&B plea to a departed girlfriend (his sister?) is a killer to this day. Sammy had been dumped by Motown and gone back to his bluesier roots. Your favourite 'Dirty Northern' classic please? (Tony I'll always acknowledge you when I shamelessly 'bootleg' this term) it's a term used on the house scene for about 15 years, as in deep down dirrrty house
