soulfulsaint Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 In another thread Tony Smith has coined the phrase 'Dirty Northern' - my interpretation of this is gritty, hard, down home dance-music with none of the elegant orchestral production techniques of Philly etc. etc. Dirty Northern. Great term. I'll start with the old Detroit classic 'Sister Lee', by Singing Sammy Ward. His R&B plea to a departed girlfriend (his sister?) is a killer to this day. Sammy had been dumped by Motown and gone back to his bluesier roots. Your favourite 'Dirty Northern' classic please? (Tony I'll always acknowledge you when I shamelessly 'bootleg' this term)

Guest Matt Male Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 (edited) Jimmy Robins - I Can't Please You Good call, forgot about that one. If anyone asked what dirty and gritty was, i'd play Jimmy Robins 'wooo hey little girl.. what's wrong with you?' brilliant! To my mind most of the best down and dirty is mid-tempo and sadly neglected these days. Haven't heard Jimmy Robins out for a while. No one's mention Benny Spellman - This Is For You My Love have they? (yes uptempo i know) and of clourse Johnny McCall - You Can't Get Away. Edited August 30, 2008 by Matt Male

Soulie78 Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 (edited) aha this topic is great, could become better than the "post stafford classics". In fact most of this records are some of my favorite dance records... pure energy!!! forget this boring new produced stuff, if you know what i mean. But it musn't be too much on the r&b side of things for me. I mean "twinkel little star" or this great oldie CLIFFORD CURRY - AIN'T NO DANGER. How good is that? You just have to move your feet. i'd like to add: forris woods - stoned on love agro, uptempo 60s/early 70s soul, that's how i like it. cheers, martin Edited August 30, 2008 by soulie78

Guest bazabod_downunder Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 Great handle.....more raunchy R'n'B is something I lean towards & is always guranteed to get me on the floor.......soul in it's purest form, as it should be sounding like it's recorded in your aunties toliet with total passion, not like the total tripe being purported to be the 'new' northern soul on another thread...but that is another story. Vernon Garrett - Shine It On Otis Redding - Lovin' By The Pound Lorretta Williams - Baby Cakes Lee Garrett - I Can't Break This Habit Peggy paxton - It Ain't What I Do It's The Way I Do It Billy Gayles - I'm Hurtin' Jimmy Robins - I Can't Please You Lee Rogers - My One & Only Miss Lavell - Stop These Teardrops Barbara Lynn - I'm A Good Woman KTF Baz
