Not sure if it counts as a ballad, but i'd say Barbara Lynn - This Is The Thanks I Get is one of my all time favourites.

The version of "someday we'll be free" from Donny's famous live lp is a particularly soulful version.

What a great artist he was , social commentary delivered in such an expressive and enlightening way.

Funnily enough this is my favourite record of the moment - although I'd classify it more as a beat ballad than a 'regular' one.

To my eternal shame I have owned a copy of "Double Life" for more than 30 years, and I only thought to turn it over recently while researching repertoire for the Jerry Fuller CD that I've just done for Ace. I can't believe that I'd been depriving myself of its brilliance for nearly four decades...

Also love Jerry's other beat ballads "I Get Carried Away" and "Whatever Happened To The Music", both of which I have known longer than a fortnight, of course....

I think you hit the nail on the head there Suz - A great ballad does just exactly that! If I was with my collection now I'd feel an evening of maudlin soul ... Hey is that a new genre??
