Guest in town Mikey Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 This thread has a turn over quicker than the news tunes at Stafford. Can anyone think of an Instrumental that went big, post 1986? I cant think of any.
Garethx Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) Jimmie Reed Jr. may have got the odd spin far earlier than Stafford: it was quite a known collectors record. A few more to add: The Andantes That's A Funny Way Geater Davis My Love Is So Strong For You Lee McKinney I'll Keep Holding On The Ascots Just A Few Feet From The Gutter The Harmonics Can I Be Your Man James Lately Love, Friends and Money Darrell Banks The Harder You Love Melvin Brown Love Stormy Weather The Fantastcis Where There's A Will Theres A Way Wilson Love Funny Money Edited August 29, 2008 by garethx

Garethx Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) Seeing Greg Tormo lurking reminds me we musn't forget Two Plus Two on Velgo. Also has no-one mentioned the monstrous Vangards Good Times, Bad Times yet? Maybe the biggest non-covered-up nighter sound of the last decade. Also musn't forget Kenni Lewis The Marrying Kind. Guest Gavin Page Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Kings Of Soul-Is your love for me How could we forget that, what a record that is as well
Guest in town Mikey Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Seeing Gareth post has reminded me of the Exits, Money. Post Stafford? How about the other side of Harry Deal too?
Guest in town Mikey Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) Two Plus Two-I'm sure/Look around Sy Hightower-I know your leaving me Kings Of Soul-Is your love for me An unnamed mate bought this for £1 at that massive car boot outside Bristol a few years back. Didnt like it, and then sold it to another unnamed mate for £20!!! WHY oh WHY didnt he offer it to me Which reminds me Man O Man was stratospherically popular around 2000 wasnt it. Garethx Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) Both sides of the Exits had been played at various venues throughout the seventies and eighties I would guess, Mikey, although Another Sundown In Watts certainly became popular in the immediate post-Stafford period. Garethx Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Doc Peabody on Both Sides is a brilliant current spin that hardly registered in the past although it may have been in the odd collection.

Guest Netspeaky Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Let's get this right Dave. You ran the No.1 all-nighter in the 80's and you can't remember when it closed? I'd hate to do a Stafford comp with you mate! Ian D That's a personal opinion, to me Morecambe was by far the better niter in terms of numbers, and is totally overlooked as a venue for some reason, even though the likes of RS was a regular there, plus some great records were first played there, Stafford has been over hyped, people who went rate it 10/10 others rated as 5/10 all depends on your view.

Russ Understand Russ, it's just you think that only Stafford was running through the 80's it wasn't and lots of people on here had either stop going or were too young, so just adding some historical background, otherwise every record played discovered/played in the 80's was Stafford and that ain't true, not saying lots of great records didn't come out of there, but they all didn't.
Garethx Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 In the post-Ray Agee rhythm 'n' soul mould: Benny C. Oliver Make It Now Tony Matthews My Wish Hayes Cotton Black Wings Pretty sure all were played at Stafford but became bigger records later. Also Milton James on Dor, which I remember being covered up as Milton Haney on John Manship sales tapes in the late 1980s.

Guest in town Mikey Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Understand Russ, it's just you think that only Stafford was running through the 80's it wasn't and lots of people on here had either stop going or were too young, so just adding some historical background, otherwise every record played discovered/played in the 80's was Stafford and that ain't true, not saying lots of great records didn't come out of there, but they all didn't. I only went to Morecombe once, but always think back on it as an oldies venue that did play some big tunes of the day. Rather like Leicester and Hinckley. I may be wrong, but Stafford is correctly thought of as a venue intent on breaking new tunes, I dont think Morecombe is thought of the same way?? Not knocking it, just giving you a kind of outsiders view. As I said I only went once, and can only really remember guys like Brian Rae and Dave Evison playing oldies sets.
Dave Thorley Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Understand Russ, it's just you think that only Stafford was running through the 80's it wasn't and lots of people on here had either stop going or were too young, so just adding some historical background, otherwise every record played discovered/played in the 80's was Stafford and that ain't true, not saying lots of great records didn't come out of there, but they all didn't. I would agree, I have never thought of Stafford as the only club that should get props. Morcombe, 100 Club and Leicester all where great allnighter. The difference was that Stafford set out to run a totally newies room, which ran for four years, so shear logistics would say alot was played there. Also Shaun ran and advertised Morcombe as an oldies allnighter and with it's location in the North West it always was going to get big numbers. In fact I can remember several letters in mags of the time from attendees complaining about DJ's playing new stuff at an oldies allnighter. But as Russ say, positive note and this tread isn't about Stafford, but the great music played since
