Simon T Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 I am thinking of moving to New Zealand and wonder if any soulies know if there is much of a soul scene there? Will probably be near Wellington if I go. Any views? I don't think there much there, even in the conurbations. My mate moved there a couple of years ago and has only been interested into Northern recently, but seems to be even finding difficulty getting northern comp Cds! quote from a email from last week "How is the Northern Soul DVD thing coming on, we are all desperate for some soul down here in the southern ocean. It is very difficult to get here, though I have bought a few through ebay, which is a bit hit and miss, I have been lucky with hits mainly, The In Crowd and Connoisseurs Vol 1&2. Do you have any recommendations for other compilation CDs? I like tracks like Tony Clarke's Landslide, The Originals Suspicion and The Excitors Blowing up my mind".

Guest Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) Been itching to reply to this, only took 24hrs to get activated. I lived in Wellington for 20 years. I also presented a Soul program on Radio Active (student radio station) for close on 10 years. Wellington as most of NZ is Soulless. But you don't moved to NZ for the music, rather the life-style. The Reggae scene isn't too bad in Wellington, my mate from London is involved in a lot of gigs. When it comes to NS or rare groove it just isn't happening. Oz has a respectable number of NS followers (all ex-pats), I heard there was one couple just outside Wellington who occasionally fly over. There is a boss record shop in Cuba Street called slow boat, you will occasionally pick up some hard to find vinyl at very cheap prices. Also you could spend days going through Real Groovy records in Auckland, I used to make a regular pilgrim north to check out the bins. Once you get settled, Sydney is only a few hours away a rtn trip setting you back about £250, each State in Oz hold NS gigs. But as I say, you move down-under especially NZ for the out-door life style, weather, healthier food, friendly people. Obviously returning to the UK after 25 yrs is was a bit of a culture shock for me. The social issues down-under are miniscule compared to the UK, just my opinion. Living in Wellington won't stop you from enjoying or getting hold of the music. Edited August 29, 2008 by Nick2008

Guest bazabod_downunder Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 LOL.....well shows how much you know then doesn't it?......New Zealand had three of the four record pressing plants in the southern hemisphere at one time, there were many soul realeases both there & here in Australia by companies such as Festival owned by Decca who had rights to rather a lot of labels, to maintain there ability to release current (then) popular records they also had to release other records, obviously there wasn't any real interest in soul here then.....more interested in Slim Dusty & the like......so tracks like Larry Santos - You Got Me Where You Want Me, Miss DD Phillips, Patrick Bradley...the list goes on & on. In fact most of the Austalian/NZ realeases are much rarer than some UK or US issues because of the very limited run & comand big money, ask John Manship. There are regular soul nites in NZ run by Chae & here in Oz in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane & here on the Gold Coast.......some of our DJ's like Pete Fowler, Denny Johnson, John Phillips, Kev Core have record collections to die for & would put many a UK DJ to shame. So just because we're on the otherside of the world don't discount us for a bunch of rednecks, just ask people that have come down, Mike Ritson, Roy Burton (both attend our National Weekender & have done for the last six years) who give us coverage in Manifesto magazine to name a serious few, with people in the UK having relatives here is a double pleasure. So save your pennies to visit us, the most friendliest, dedicated, educated soulies you'd find anywhere guaranteed! KTF Baz Whatever it aint gonna' be as good as here........wellington....probberly play boots anyway good lukc tho'.
