Guest Beeks
You have no history and by the looks of some of your statements no idea at times about Northern Soul. I havn't been making comments about Northern Soul...I've been making comments on the bad attitudes of a minority of Know it alls on here Maybe you should be better off keeping your mouth closed a bit more and learning a bit more before getting involved in stupid arguments And why should I keep my mouth closed Chalky?.....ahhh...I see....just let them insult and belittle anyone they like? Not likely...especially 99 times out of a hundred...after following me around...the first wonderfully observed point comes from them in the first place...this thread being a prime example With people who have been there, done it, worn the t-shirt out, even had beer spilt down it There are so many more people on this forum Chalky...good people...who have done all of the above...Who don't feel the need to brag and belittle...to be honest...id rather learn from people like them than lower myself to associating with people who give this music a bad name Link to comment Social source share
Steve G
bloody SOUL POLICE amount to nothing more than elitise egotistical anal-retentives Are you Ian Levine in disguise? Actually in all seriousness I do not believe the origins of the soul police have anything to do with playing original vinyl versus pressings at clubs. Certainly not round these parts (Beds, Herts) where NO DJ would play anything other than original vinyl - the matter doesn't even come into the equation. The origins of the soul police from what I remember where more about taste of music as in "Don't play Dean Barlow, you'll be in trouble with the soul police" or "I'd take that copy of Mickey Moonshine off the decks mate, or the soul police will have a word" etc. References to vinyl and the soul police I think came much later, and the use of the term in that context came from those who were DJing without original vinyl as a kind of put down to those that had the vinyl. My job is to warn repeating offender DJs that many of the pizz poor quality illegal bootleg 45s they play are hurting music lovers sensitive hearing, and will lead on to destroying their souls. LOL I think most of us know who they are that plays Boots. I think it devalues a venue especially as what happened to me at the weekend. I was Dj'ing earlier in the evening and someone came on at a prime spot playing Bootlegs, whilst I had most of the originals in my box that he was playing. Worst of all he was playing as though he was the top man. He fooled no one but do not think any of the promoters at that gig will be inviting him to one of their venues. Not this one anyway. stomper45
That just smacks of exclusivety to me...Yes I agree...noone wants to hear their favourite record on a KFC advert but as far as playing a record out...whenever I DJ I want as many people as possible to hear great music...not just a small number of conneseurs...now in an ideal world everyone would have originals...and I suppose on the serious Northern scene that will ALWAYS be the case...but alot of DJs will play out various genres of music in bars/clubs in their catchment area...and I think in THIS environment it is perfectly acceptable to play reissues...saying that my reissues are now as we speak gathering cobwebs in the corner Exclusivity damn right it is, an underground scene that has refused attempts to go mainstream and doesnt care what outsiders think. Why do you and others cite original has to be expensive. If you "wannabe" a dj, get of your arse and find some original cheap tunes that have your stamp on them. Listening to some plonker play a load of thrashed out re releases or overplayed oldies that if i havnt got probably have on cd (horror) or on boot (naively as trainee soulie in some dodgy car park) at home isnt what got me into and kept me on this scene. Soul Police rules dont apply to non northern bars clubs other scenes can do what they want. Ayup Andy yep we wont agree, your view of the future is plausible. Wheres all the fun in discovering new tracks its all been done for you, who would decide who the djs are as all have the same gigantic collections. Think by then it would revert to a live scene as no buzz in same ole same ole. Edited August 28, 2008 by stomper45 Link to comment Social source share

So do we want younger people coming through to carry this music on or not?? Even though I have been llistening to this music since before some of you were born I must count as a wannabe DJ as my collection (started in 1964) was never bought to DJ with so I am buying things I like that mean something to me and replacing old scratched stuff. Most of my DJ experience was with house music and I have even been in the hallowed DJ box at BODY & Soul (well it will mean something to Beeks anyway). Being a DJ is about having decent tunes, reading the room and the mood and responding to that. If someone wants to develop in a new genre surely that's good thing? Isn't it????? Guest gordon russell
dj's who play boots, these fellas do just for their ego,no other reason. It would be bad enough if you had been asked to dj at a venue some miles away (because you have some nice/expensive tunes) when you get there the fella before plays 3or 4 of your tunes, but if he had played those tunes on bootlegs, you'd have every right to walk out.People don't travel miles to see a certain dj,they go because that dj has certain tunes you know your gonna hear and certain dj's are linked with quality tunes and sets.If dj's at a venue are gonna play bootlegs and the promoter has no problem with this WHY DO THEY NEVER ADVERTISE THE FACT. Russ Vickers
I swear to God! honest govener! have a look on said site. the thread was something about acatates and a well know DJ actually contradites himself throughout saying that only orig vinyl should be allowed to be played out. five minutes later he is making the hypocritical statements that it was 'agreed' they could play carvers/boots so long as they had orig in box (this helped preserve the orig!!!! ) i was signed in as wiganjoker (and as a few guests) just to wind the situation up. he was going off his head each time his hypocrosy was pointed out. all bloody hypocritical and elitism in my opinion as boots/carvers have been around since the scene began. IMHO the soul police are born from those afraid that others will do better spots than them and their egos will be dented I played at one gig where i played all orig vinyl (and one re-issue) and tried to give the crowd something different from the same old top 500. have a guess which record had the floor PACKED I have also seen another thread on here where a well known venue that you would think the soul police would be out in full force (including helicopters) and an extremely well known DJ is photographed playing CD's bloody SOUL POLICE amount to nothing more than elitise egotistical anal-retentives there now, thats made me a few friends on here Mike Would this record not have packed the floor if it had been on its original format............or are we saying, that said tune packed the floor because it was a re-issue/boot what ever ..............its not the record, its the format. Some people use the phrase to ridicule those that speak out about certain things on the NS scene that they disagree with...........as with everything there are extremes, but if trying to do your best to promote & enjoy the music we love in the traditional manner, these traditions having been passed down through the years & is generally excepted as being the norm & the correct etiquette is being a Soul Copper then........ allo, allo, allo.............. instead of seeing it as a slur I wear my constabulary badge with honour !!!!!!!!!!!!. Russ Haha now that I dont mind...more like the local Bobby of Soul than the Soul Gestapo Link to comment Social source share
Guest SteveC
Not that I need to explain myself to you Jocko...just have fun watching you try to pick holes in me...deride me about Northern Soul if it makes you feel better...but in the world of deep house I am King He's actually making you look quite silly but there again I suppose you'd think you'd have a good chance of winning "Pop Idol" too Link to comment Social source share
jocko
Isn't it????? wtf are you on about, repeat it in English. If you read my post you might have twigged, I too have been to Body and Soul, as I was at the Shelter and most recently at Francis K monday night Space gig, I used to be pretty good friends with Dave Camacho and Victor Simonelli if we want to name drop, if you dont recognise these names I suspect you are on about a differing house scene, although exactly what it has to do with any of this I really don't know. Did you actually read what I said or as usual you look for the same argumentative point. Exactly what young person are you talking about, aint no young people on here, and exactly what new genre are you on about Link to comment Social source share
Guest Beeks
He's actually making you look quite silly but there again I suppose you'd think you'd have a good chance of winning "Pop Idol" too Ahhh...making me look silly is he? I think my replies as ever have been reasonably polite and articulate in the face of quite obvious provocation...and to be honest Jocko making me look silly is a bit of a contradiction in itself...but thanks for looking out for my welfare Link to comment Social source share

Russ Vickers
To be honest Im sitting here wondering why Im getting involved in all of this again.............but as I see it, certain issues on the NS scene are a matter of courtesy & tradition, yes, we should all question & push the boundaries, but as one of the only people to come out of the 'Police Box' on this thread, I dont see some of our traditions 'as the law' but just a guide line as how to conduct your self as a Promoter/DJ/Collector or punter, on the whole these have occured naturally almost, as a way of 'self policing'.........other wise we would have no ethical frame work or code as to what is excepted behaviour etc.....................f**k me, what am I on about ..........almost make it sound like a 'secret society' .........eeeeerrrrrrmmmmmmmm maybe we were once upon a time.
