Wot ! they are so wonderful to watch , if they really love soul music and the artist's who they claim they do god knows why criticize the video's , where else could we have watched Gwen Owens, Yvonne Vernee , Emanuel laskey .

There will be people who will dispute the above statements , but no one cannot give rightful acknowledgement to the hard work Ian has put in regarding the realisation of this project , by giving us an irreplaceable filmed testimony of / to talent of those still , or sadly , to those who are no longer with us ..........

I have a sneaking suspicion that critics of the DVDs will watch them out of curiousity , and will end up admitting - albeit it may be begrudgingly to themselves and under their breath - " that was not bad : I enjoyed so and so " .........

I won't for a couple of reasons, one i don't wish to put money in Ian's pocket after the disgraceful way he's acted on this thread & two because i don't think it'll be any good.

To be honest even if it had been done in a good way with the original recordings used & a decent video used i wouldn't be that interested, my main interest is in the records & how they sound, i'm not particularly bothered seeing what the artists look like who created them.

I don't agree with that, Simon. I think if it was well produced with good backing and instrumentation with tasteful presentation and not those weird S,A&W style 80s graphics it would be a great thing. Like the presentation of the Daptone videos for example. I don't really care that Levine is a cant, if he did a good job I'd appreciate it.

How it is though, it will probably put off anyone who doesn't know what vintage/northern soul music really sounds like.

It's just my opinion, I might be wrong :huh:

Anyone who has got the set; watch the Bobby Hebb clip "Love Love Love" - it's a great song and an enjoyable performance but then try and imagine it without the vocal and with the piano more to the fore - you would have one of the best Northern instrumentals ever, seriously.

I watched disc 1 last night and absolutely loved it, although there were bits i didn't like as much.

Being the sad person that i am i marked each track with a score based on video, music and personnal feelings

video and music could each score up to 1 at 0.1 intervals and personnal could score up to 0.5 at 0.1 intervals.Giving a total possible score of 100 for the 40 tracks.

Now i don't pretend to be any kind of expert in this field but i do know what i like and this disc i scored at 84.5 out of 100.

I would gladly have paid £26 for this disc alone but i got 5 discs and can't wait to watch the rest.

My copy of the DVD arrived this morning and I've just watched the first disc and it's fabulous. The videos are crisp and (almost) totally lacking in gimmicky effects which makes it totally watchable. Some tracks are obviously better than others but it is fantastic opportunity to see all the artists who, at one time, we could only dream of seeing and some, sadly, who we will never see again.

Ian, you've done a fantastic job - you have every reason to be proud you have created a unique historical (and highly entertaining) document which everyone who loves soul music should own.

As far as the Gwen Owens video being called an abomination - words fail me. Why? I don't care that it isn't the original backing track. I don't care that it isn't the original vocal. I don't care that Gwen Owens is getting older - we all are. It's just great to be able to see her on the screen. If I wanted to hear the original I'd dig out the CD (no I don't believe in spending megabucks on vinyl - I just like the music).

Now all I need is another few hours to watch the other four discs. Thanks again Ian - one of the best £25.98 I have ever spent.

My passion is vinyl & the music that comes out of it, just in the same way that i like the film 'Get Cater' or the paintings of Michelangelo, i'm not really interested in who's behind them i just enjoy the art & let my imagination do the rest.

Because it was horrible, dire backing, cheesy horrible backing visuals etc.

That record should just be left alone imho, it was perfect when it was recorded in the 6ts, this jazzed up new version just sullies the vision of it's original perfection for me, just like when someone tries to remake a classic film like 'Get Carter' & gets it badly wrong, some things should not be messed with unless you can pretty much guarantee it will be improved, i think even the most ardent supporters of the video on here will say this new version does not improve it.

I do like watching original performances from the 6ts that are interesting, i've bought a few dvds off you in the past & also some superb late 7ts new wave stuff also but let's say diplomatically this forthcoming dvd that we're debating is obviously not going to be for me.

Don't agree with that one little bit but 'chacun a son gout'.

I always felt that the mix of the original Gwen Owens was poor - great tune though it is. In fact, I like 'You Better Watch Out' much better but that's only my opinion and I wouldn't slag anybody off for thinking differently. I can certainly agree with remakes of classic films like 'Get Carter', 'Psycho', '39 Steps', etc., etc. - you can't better perfection. However, the case for Gwen Owens is not the same - Ian has stated on many occasions that he could not use the originals for contractual reasons. I'm sure we'd all like to see original footage in B&W from the 60s but it doesn't exist so we can't. I'm also sure that his intention was not to improve it but to complement the original.

I suggest if you don't like it don't bother watching it and leave it to those who do appreciate it.

I won't bother watching it, that's fairly obvious BUT i'm still entitled to an oppinion & this is a forum discussion after all, well at least it's meant to be.

But its you thats decides if its fair or not Ian. Thats not a democradic attitde.

And to be honest, the U.S. Politics analogy is tenuos to say the least. To compare yourself to someone who is being undermined by innuendo and smear in the U.S. simply because of the colour of his skin is, imo, a particularly tacky attempt to gain some sort of moral high ground.

If you believe in your project (and plenty of people agree with you), why not accept that some don't care for it and concentrate on the positives ?

So many of these fantastic soul singers are no longer with us. Anytime they opened their mouths it was gold imo, whatever the backing. Bless them and to be honest I'd feel a bit ashamed if they knew how we speak to each other about their music.

The soul music is king and ALL realizers of this are deserving of peaceful & soulful good vibies.

On Tuesday, two days ago, while working with Tommy Hunt, I tried to explain to him how much hurt and damage the purists are doing, and he kept asking "But why ??", and I kept trying to explain people like Simon Bridger to him, but he kept replying with "But why ??" I tried so hard to explain to this man who stood on stage at the Apollo in the 1950s with The Flamingos, and then on the same stage in the early 1960s, singing "Human" and "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", and he just could not get his head around why anyone who claimed to like soul music would be like that, and think like that, and be so disrespectful to great artists who care about their careers, and the only way I could finally explain it to him is to say "Tommy, the problem is there are just some awful people around who don't care", and put in those terms, I think he got a better idea of the problems we all face.

You like Northern Soul that sounds OVERPOWERINGLY lean, and cheap, off-key, sparse, and with slightly out of tune horns.

The great timeless Northern Soul classics weren't like that. They were Motownesque, full of strings and high smooth brass.

Your personal concept of Northern Soul 2008 style is more based on funk with a beat.

ALIEN to those of use who were there in the day.

And alien to everything I stand for.

The DVD is out no use crying over spilt milk, we all know these songs and can sing them backwards so if your going to do it just give us something to get our teeth into, something a bit different, something a bit clever, most of us would be happy with acapella versions.

and be so disrespectful to great artists who care about their careers, we are not being disrespectful to all these artist at all Ian we don't like your mix its a simple as that, you have even remixed and edited the video of these tracks your self because you were not happy with them.

I think its that simple, JT is saying he likes the sound of a live performance in a song and that's why he is trying to discredit you view on what you see counts as a 60ts original sounding song. should be.

I have NOT passed any comment on this latest release. Because I haven't seen it so cannot possibly have an opinion, even a general one. My only posts on this thread have been about you comparing yourself, laughably. to Barak Obama, and the racism he his suffering in the US. How big is your ego ?

I have not criticised the artists, the arrangements or anything, but as usual you deliberately miss the point and make out that I am, at best, unappreciative of the artists. Where have I suggested that they should have shut their mouths, where have I showed ANY artist disrespect ? Have I said they shouldn't have a career, that they shouldn't make another record?

You posted the Dem/Reps comparison, and I commented on it, and it alone. So don't try to twist the situation with regard to those posts by aiming an answer to a question I never asked. Do you understand irony ? You mention the smear campaign against Obama (incidentally its McCain not Bush) and then infer that I've said something when in fact I never mentioned the subject.

I adored it and always did from the very moment I heard it, but Russ Winstanley had banned all my productions from being played at The Casino by that point, after a row over "Twenty Four Hours A Day", and so there was no way, at that time, politically, I could have played it at Blackpool. Les still thought I should have done, and taken the moral high ground, but after all the Tony Cummings stuff in Black Music, I somehow couldn't bring myself to.

I even had a US copy on Private Stock, in case I ever did play it, so I wouldn't have to play it on the Spark label, and it was actually in my DJ box for a while.

I even had a US copy on Private Stock, in case I ever did play it, so I wouldn't have to play it on the Spark label, and it was actually in my DJ box for a while.

A very weak answer Ian - your RESPECT for the artist should have overcome your feud with Russ if you genuinely liked the record you should have played it & not some playground tit for tat over Barbara Pennington stopping you from doing so.

BTW Ian as I have side earlier - which you chose to ignore - I have supported you many times over the years when I think you are right - it does not mean I am a sycophant that agrees with everything you or anyone else on here has to say.

Then why did he cover the LJ Johnson Temperature as Barnaby By for a good 2 years if not longer.

I was told it was because someone played a trick on him, smeared out the name in black felt tip, and he hadn't got a clue that it was one of mine, especially as it was on US Mercury, and looked similar to Alfie Davison.

I predicted you would say that, and lo and behold you did. Glad you were so predictable.

I was talking about a person's right to choose an abortion or not, or indeed a couples' joint choice, not forced upon them by a state, behaving little better than fascists.

But if a person, male or female, goes out of their way to be obnoxious, and bump the camera on purpose, when I'm trying to film something important, and be a disgraceful nuisance, a dig with my elbow is far far milder than that scum deserved.

At least back on ANS, when people behaved as reprehensively and disgracefully as some of the posts in these last two pages, at least I could say FOAD without fear of getting myself banned.
