chrissie Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 (edited) If you think that this C.P. Spencer record, with its wonderful mood and lyrics, so soulful vocal, and wonderful backing vocals by all four original Andantes, is disco, then there's really no hope for you where my stuff is concerned. Thank god for that Give me Friday Brown, Liz Verdi, Fontella Bass, Jackie Ross, Peggy March, Little Ann, Joy Lovejoy, Dusty, Pearlean Gray, Chi Chi, Halos, Lydia Pense and of course the best record ever made in the 70s Rozetta Johnson etc etc etc anyday, True MP sounds ..................anyway at my age I would look shite in spandex QoFxx Edited August 23, 2008 by chrissie

Davetay Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Maybe I did do a second spot then, in November 1973. My first spot was the first week of October, but Russ has always maintained I did two diferent spots a month apart, not just one. If this date in November is correct, you may have just proved this. And my memory of only doing one is wrong this time. I think this is quite fascinating. Yes Ian, as i said in a earlier post the last time you were on the decks at Wigan Nov 73. I remember because it was my old mate Dave Ellson 1st night at the Casino. He did a tape on the night, i don,t know if he has still got it? Dave.
KevH Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Ian,looking back now,how do you think records which were played late on at the Mecca, like "Nine times"- Moments, "Do what you feel" - Rimshots, and "Fifth of Beethoven" - Walter Murphy have stood up?
chrissie Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 (edited) This still scares the sh*t out of me every time I see it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KTF. Drew. Dave Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 just trying to get this topic away from handbags and onto somthing soulful! Just woundering how Ian went from Mecca DJ to producing records in the USA as i find this time 74 to 76 at Blackpool Mecca intresting you got a problem with that? Steve J Problem? Hell no, why should I have a problem? I find this thread quite entertaining. It puts me in mind of a TV programme: An Audience With Dame Edna.

Guest KEN-SOUL Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Thank f*** for that i got to the end or did i tedsoul! there is no begining and there is no end. you should read my book! when i was a youngster, i honestly thought that ian levine was selling the northern soul jersey, if you like. now, i dont think that way. there cant be anything wrong with capturing the original artists for posterity... i still remember hearing al williams- i am nothing for the first time, at an all-nighter in edinburgh when i was 14! you can't ever go back...at least as far as a personal experiance is concerned.
Guest Netspeaky Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 whhoooah...........didn't suddenly dislike it or any other record that was out to make money. Some records can appear to be a bit too contrived/twee ie; manufactured for the scene. The general ethos of the scene is the Underdog syndrome, whether it be 60's or modern. We all like to think we're the first to acknowledge a record,to hear it for what it is,to lift it from obscurity,to make it our own. Is the scene not built on records that sold f -all.? Recorded by artists who generally made nothing out of their talent. I don't like being told ,"this is soul, buy it". ps- no need to vent you anger on me in your "bold" font. It all depends when you joined the SCENE as the majority of records played first on the Scene were by established artist who did make a good living out of their music (Geno Washington, Jimmy James, Impressions, O'Jays, Motown Acts, Stax acts etc and even some of the BIG bombers out there, went on to earn a living in the Music industry, generally any artist that had multiple releases must have had varying degrees of success in some capacity or else they wouldn't have got the chance to record again and again. Some of these obscure artist had careers of ten+ years, so of course they made a living from it, they may have been third or fourth division but that doesn't mean they didn't pay the rent out of the work, no one does anything for nothing, they may have had high hopes of reaching big time, but we all don't get there, it's a fact of life. By your account, the northern/rare soul scene needs to Burn any record that sold more than 100 copies and shoot any DJ who plays one.
Steve Plumb Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 No-one's accidentally going to stumble in here if they want to discuss The Orwell, now are they ??? Just logged on at 4pm today and it's taken me best part of 4 hours to get thru the thread! Very interesting stuff but we shouldn't be surprised at it's popularity should we? Love him or loathe him BUT you can't ignore him! Surely a shot in the arm for Soul-Source! Good evening Ian - hope you're well mate - thanks for the mention above, can we discuss The Orwell then As it happens, yer good mate Mr Curtis did an authentic 'Last Hour of The Mecca' set at our last one and it was superb Cheers Steve
Guest Netspeaky Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 He was the lead singer on "Suspicion", he was a lovely bloke, a super talented singer, Sylvia's lyrics are the best and most heart wrenching she ever wrote, and it distresses me to hear you dismiss a record I hold sacred as being "disco". Sounds good to me, uplifting happy tune not heard it before is it available as a 45?
Guest Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 The one about Soulful House. I answered loads of questions about Soulful House. Just not my personal music. Sorry.

Well as I know for a fact I did the third one ever, that means I definitely did two. No wonder Bill Pye threatened to fire me from the Mecca.

Some have some haven't. We NEVER EVER played A Fifth Of Beethoven - SACRILIGE !!!!! We played the other side, "California Strut". Here is my favourite Mecca memory from that period, and no it's not my record and has nothing whatsoever to do with me. ">

Guest Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Sounds good to me, uplifting happy tune not heard it before is it available as a 45? No, it was released on a Kev Roberts Goldsoul CD called "Solid Ground", but it's deleted now and actually quite hard to find. I keep getting asked for copies and I have one left which is my own copy and that's it.
Guest alison Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 How's life ?? Remember the rugby shorts threads ??? Hello babycakes God how can we forget that ! Guest Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Lovely song . You should be proud of that one . Great melody and proper chord changes . Way better than the 'collector' type sounds one has to endure at soul nights these days . Thankyou. I am more proud of that particular one than I can put into words. Your post made this whole entire thread worthwhile for me. If just one new person appreciates that wonderful song, then I am happy. I thank you for restoring my faith
Ian Dewhirst Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 To pretend as Ian D does that we are sat at the feet of Plato as pearls of wisdom spill from his lips is disingenious to say the least. ROD LOL, that's funny Rod, but as poetically as you've put it, I don't really think that was the image I was trying to get across. Ian D
Guest Simon Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Simon, you have been a friend of mine on MySpace for a year and a half. I think you're also a friend on facebook. Are you being a hypocrite here to make yourself look like the big man ??? Hi Ian, Why am i being a hypocrite, you can be friends & still have views on someone. I'm not trying to or interested in looking like the big man, that's not my style at all, i'm just writing it as i see it. I've seen you come & go on many NS internet forums over the years, i'm sure this one will pan out the same way the others went. For the record as i said in my previous thread, there's a side to you i quite like & i am happy to acknowledge the large amount you have contributed in the past to Northern Soul music. Simon

Simon I do still like you. I just wish that someone who I thought of as a friend didn't slag me off. There are more than enough enemies to do that, and talking of that, how long can it be before your dear old friend and my nemesis Stuart Tyler comes along to wind me up ???

I was an early member on the original Soul Source but got banned in December 2000. It was all over a derisory comment about Billy Ocean as I remember. I founded A.N.S. on January 2nd 2001, and it's still going and thriving to this day. Small and compact but thriving and a hive of interesting postings. Now I have rejoined Soul Source, that's the sum total of my internet NS forums, so I don't think your comment was particularly fair.

Ok, fair dos Ian, but i have seen this sequence played out on the web a few times though. Billy Ocean, ah those were the days, remember it well, sounds sorta funny now getting banned from an internet forum for an argument over Billy Ocean! Simon
