Mark R Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Just wanted to thank Mick for asking me down to the studio to play a few tunes and chew the fat about the music and the "scene" in the UK. Was great also to meet Mark & Steve after conversing with them before through a combination of internet and telephone!! In this age of technology it's nice to actually meet people!! Pity Roger couldn't make it through.....maybe next time. Hopefully Mick can come up with a playlist for you all, and thanks for the mails re the music..........always a pleasure playing some quality new music. It was interesting to share some thoughts on the state of the scene/events etc. I think it will need a round 2 though to get it all out of the brain...........so much to cover, so much to say............it's good to get it discussed though I think, particularly at the moment. The new music's never been so plentiful/accessible, and there's plenty of good quality there, and yet, notable exceptions aside, struggles to fill venues. Cheers, Mark R

Soul Discovery Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 (edited) For those that are interested in such things i drew the short straw on sunday and was on playlist duty unfortunately not having the incredibly clever gouch on hand to help me meant that i had to soldier on alone so hense here we are at thursday with me only just putting up the playlist i take full responsibility and apologise profusely to mick for my inability to listen or use a pen. Anyways that aside of got to say what a pleasure it was meeting mark randle an unbelieveably nice fella and honest too boot the discussion on the current scene and the housier side of our music was great and ive got too say as the neanderthal that i am i actually enjoyed those housier tunes the vocals were excellent and ive got too say i see how they go down so well with the dancers on our scene, that doesnt mean i,m going to rush out and buy them but i do see where they fit in thats for sure because after all most of those that go to gigs that play the more newer and upfront tunes go to dance as well as socialize i still kinda struggle to see where they all fit in in one night under one roof but i know they do at both soul purpose and soul underground i think where i struggle is that i dont think the kind of newer soul i like would fit in but the upside to that is that it is very much more suited to the radio.I think if i kept wanting to hear my kind of soul music played out i would be banging my head against the wall forever i think i have to accept that radio is its best medium and if even a small amount of it crosses over to the club environment then that would be great. Mark really made me think on sunday about my passion for the music and how i continually beat myself up and others for not liking it,I think soul discovery is testament to the fact that the music i love does have an audience it may not be in a club environment but radio is the medium for us and long may it continue. "Its about the music" just about says it all Well onto the playlist 21.9.08 Maze - Too many games (Capitol) - MOD Chantel - It's Over - (Mo philly) - MOD Brother Tyrone - Ain't No Love - (Mindbender) - MOD Rene Andre - Maybe In Another life - MM Wayne Brady - FWB - (Peak) - MR Wil Easley - Hell On Your Hands - (CDS) - SD Heston - Easy - (Storyteller) - MM Common Knowledge - Just Friends - (Common Knowledge Prods) - MR Rany Brown - Bedroom Eyes - (Locobop) - MM Eric Benet - Your The Only One - (Reprise) - MR The Controllers - In to your heart - (Malaco) - SD Roy Hightower - Dont feel sorry for yourself - (CDS) - MOD Linda Jones - Can i dig it - (Philerzy Prods) - MM Raphael Saddiq - Never give you up - (Columbia) - MR The Pentagons - Thats all over baby - (True Gems) - SD Frankie - Lets go to the edge together - (The Rabitt Factory Inc) - MOD Willie Collins - Righteous Man - (Basic Image) - MM Adrian Brown & Friends - Free - (Nikab Productions) - MR Jay I Bee - Your Love - (Jayibee) - MOD Gregg Rose - Greatest inspiration - (GLR entertainment) - SD Vernon Williams - If - (Artistic soul entertainment) - MM Mary Wynn - 12 Years - (Mary Wynn) - SD Crystal Motion - Love is on it's way - (Demo) - MOD Kindred - As Of Yet - (Hidden Beach) - MR Jafrosax - Grow - (Konami) - MR Chris Herbert & Asaph Womack - Shelter Me - (Easy street records) - MR Solaris - Change the world - (Sunsource) - MR Isiah - The Truth - (12 tribe records) - MM Perfection - 24 Hours - (Jea Records) - SD Ms Nicole Jackson - Can We Go There - (Gouch) - MM Chester Gregory - Dreamin - (Chester Gregory) - MR Greg Rose - I still get off on you - (GLR entertainment) - SD Blue Mist Band - Valentine Lady - (Robert Kelley) - MM Anyway mick thanks again for the opportunity and a future show with your good self and both Mark Randle & Roger Williams would be a great idea so you can expand on some of the ideas and music discussed on the show as for the rest of us reprobates and that includes you Mr Dolan i think Mick may have something special lined up for christmas along the lines of "how many elephants can you get in a mini" with that thought i betta do some work catch u all later Best Mark Merry Edited September 25, 2008 by Soul Discovery

Just FABULOUS! Cheers Sean
Sean Hampsey Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Just thought I'd re-post the show playlist with Sean's list ammended as there were quite a few typos amongst it - probably Mick was struggling to read Sean's handwriting? ( ) *********************** By the way, that Carla Thomas track "Same thing" - is it the same song as done by Margie Joseph on Stax?... Or just the same title? Yes John... you've seen enough of my old tape lists to know that illegibility is wot keeps 'em guessing As for Carla... its a different song by Margie, in itself a nice Jazzy fingersnapper, but not in same league as Carla baby (IMO). Will respond to your pm Re Samuel later. Got to get some Zzzz off to the Lake District early in the morning! Really appreciate your typing up the tracklisting mate. As ever, you are Soul Perfection! Sean
Djmelismo Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 Thanks Mel, Think you and me have got the EU monopoly on Lyfe Jennings! A Best kept secret mate! Sean Hi Sean! Chester "Lyfe" Jennings is a great talent. With 1 EP and 3 full albums below his belt he ought to crossover to the mainstrean. Has been accepted by the urban crowd, but I think he has the kind of rough soulfulness that we associate with the Bobby Womacks and Johnnie Taylors so he should appeal to most soulies. He ought to be a major star. I like his first album, do not rate his second effort that highly, but think he´s back to form with his third album which is currently available via all the usual sources: https://www.amazon.com/Lyfe-Change-Jennings...1745&sr=1-1 And what a life story. At the age of 15 he was sentenced to 10 years of prison (for Arson!), and when he got out he started recording music, the first album got its name from his prison number 268-192! Cheers, Melismo

Cheers, Melismo Agree Mel. As I said on the show, to me Lyfe Jennings is Womack for the 21st Century. Get past the Rap and some great storylines and vocalising on all his albums. "Smile" "Keep Your Head Up" "Must Be Nice" and the WONDERFUL "Cry" are all personal faves! Anyone unaware of this tremendous artist, check out the awesome 'Cry' here.... ...and tell me Soul Music aint made no more! https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sf0rm6YJP1E Sean A more Audible clip of 'Cry' here: https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=x_eU7dsbUks&...feature=related His Latest single here.... OMG! Hey.... When did you last go in a club with a vibe as good as this :-) Hearing this on the Car Radio one night in downtown Memphis is a memory that will stay with me forever. https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=m3787j_3eaE Edited October 24, 2008 by Sean Hampsey
