Just a wondering... shades.gif

Do you think in this day and age, with the scene as we have it now that a venue can survive without a licenced bar?..

If its the right venue, perfect in every way except without a bar (but you could bring your own)...could it work?..

Thoughts appreciated, either by pm or by reply...

Gary Todd runs a do in the Southampton area without a bar that seems to run perfectly fine, peeps just bring their own booze along.

Thanks Simon,

Didn't know that. I dont think we've got any around Manchester, which aren't licenced.

I'm not sure either. Probably be a 50/50 split. People generally like taking their own booze to places don't they? Often cheaper & no queues at the bar! wink.gif It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, i'd go! :D

It'd work for me , but then i don't drink lol

I'm not that bothered personally about drinking at dos, i only like decent red wine & real ale & you rarely get either of these at venues.

I normally just drink if the music's a bit dull other than that i hope to either be on the dancefloor, looking at records or chatting.

Thanks y'all...

Nope, the conversation surrounding this 'fantasy venue' definately included the fact that alcohol wouldn't be banned but wouldn't be sold..

Personally, I'd put up with slightly warmer beer if it meant I was paying £1 a bottle in the supermarket beforehand rather than £3 a bottle,as in most clubs.

I'd be happy wrapping them in a damp towel or something..

Its a tough one Jane... If the crowd i was after was a younger crowd then yes a bring your own would be ok but the older crowd would be lazy i guess and want to comfort of knowing there is a bar.... They are not the kind to sit around with carry out bags of warm beer i guess..

The good point of a place with no bar though is that it can have the feel of the real underground/seedy and lawless, thats what the crowd wanted back in the day but now they are all grown up and want some creature comforts..

I used to take my own tipple when i was on jobseekers, oh that's right i still am. I'ts not a bad idea (to BYO not sign on). We had one of the American Drifters living in our village near Scarborough and he used to put a show on in the school hall to raise money for the school, candle lit tables and all. Either BYO or bottles of wine at a reasonable price for sale. I hate being ripped off at venues, that just sucks.

I always quite liked those empty bottles of wine with candles inserted in them to provide some demure lighting - very romantic!

You see the B&Q toolboxes with the middle's drilled out and sold as record boxes so why the heck not!..

Or freeze them before you went. :D

Personally it wouldn't bother me in the slightest cos very rarely I drink. Even when I do then it's no more than one or two.

I would love to say it wouldn't matter, but in all honesty, it probably would.

The only way to find out is to do go ahead and do it. Because as you know yourself Jayne, what people say on here and what they do are two completely different things.

It will be the second and third nights that will tell what people really think imo.

yeh, you're probably right, although every woman I know has a bottle of vodka in her bag on a saturday night.. lol.. (or maybe it's just the company I keep) unsure.gif

I agree about the real underground feel too, especially if it's an alniter rather than a soul night.

Hi Joan,

Good idea, (unless you're me)..I did that before Prestwich recently, I put some cans of lager in the freezer to take out with me and forgot about them, came home and one had exploded in the freezer....

Thanks

That's a great idea with the food, people from different counties or even countries could bring their regions specialty.

Yorkshire folk could bring some Yorkshire puddings, what a treat.

I'd imagine it would be harder to get a decent venue without the venue insisting on a full bar, the venue would want to make money somehow.

No expert on these matters though rolleyes.gif

Wouldnt even need a run venue...could be like the late 80s Blackburn Raves...have secret location Soul Nights in deserted warehouses!! :D

Drink red wine, no need for chilling.....and that way I won't be the only one sporting a vimtoesque tach :D

Sounds great to me compared to the prices in some venues...although the places I generally tend to be on the cheaper sider...like Broughton where they almost pay you for a pint :lol:laugh.gif

oh yes! warehouse soul... that would shake things up a bit...

Very easy to organise seeing as the communications systems are already in place (oh what some like DIY would have been able to do with mobile phones and the internet int early 90s)

In that special circumstance alcohol will not even cross the punters minds :D

Although, it wont be the soul police you will have to watch out for ph34r.gif

Think you might have something there, only problem being, not sure 40 plus year olds with families will be wanting to get arrested that often.

I dont think, with the general age group we have that the police would give us much grief though?.. :g:

(without too much digging about of course!)

Shame the 80's & 90's warehouse parties have gained the reputation they did with the media etc.

Very easy to organise?.. I reckon it'd be a nightmare. The beauty of function rooms is that they have event manager's to do everything for you. The effort that must have gone in behind the scene's of decent warehouse parties must have been pretty great.

Maybe I'm wrong though.. I dont know anything about them generally..
