I have had cds/tapes done for quite a few folk based on what kind of thing they said they liked when i have played them.. Some have liked the fast northern stuff and others the more bluesy RnB OR funk/soul.. Maybe a comp that you got from mates with a combination of all would do the trick..

Hi Karen, If you have an address you can pm me, I'd be happy to send you over copies of the stuff I got given that got me into it, ruined my life and nearly bankrupted me.. sorry... that should probably say the tunes I fell in love with shouldn't it.. ..I've got hundreds of millions of cd's folks have given me that would be suitable. A similar thread a few months ago brought up some crackin' lists of tunes. Jayne.x.
Spacehopper Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 not sure if its on cd but FOOTSTOMPERS on kent is by far my fave lp ....every tune is a classic...if i had to choose one record to own that would be it...
Guest Matt Male Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 One of the first compilations i heard (bought) was 'This Is Northern Soul' on Grapevine. It's still one of the best compilations ever in my opinion. I'd just play a newcomer that i reckon. If it was good enough for me etc....

Eddie Hubbard Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 The " Northern monsters " CD on Kent is a good one , as are the 2 " Twisted Wheel " comps on Goldmine . Or the recent Wigan , Blackpool Mecca , Torch , Wheel comps that Ian Dewhirst has compiled .Best ,Eddie
Sebastian Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 (edited) In the mid-90s a UK label called LIFE ON MARS ENTERTAINMENT issued a cheapo 3-CD BOX SET licensed from Goldmine Soul Supply called "The Cream Of Northern Soul" (in the same kind of packaging as the Trojan boxes). Its effect on me and my friends was devastating. When I see the tracklisting today I realise that it's 100% solid northern soul oldies, but neither me nor my friends had EVER heard ANY of these tunes prior to hearing the three CDs in this box-set. It was an amazing experience and probably the single most important factor that got me into the rarer end of soul music. I still think it's a fantastic tracklisting and I love almost all of these 36 tunes. I would reccomend it to anyone who's interested in finding out about northern soul. Check it out: 01. Bob Relf - Blowing My Mind To Pieces 02. J.J. Barnes - Our Love Is In The Pocket 03. Rose Batiste - Hit And Run 04. Darrell Banks - Angel Baby 05. Olympics - Same Old Thing 06. pikeys dog Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 Hardly rocket science putting together a collection of classic oldies though is it... bit like sticking a pin in a list. Couple of CDs that are good for non-northern fans are Up All Night vol1 and vol2.
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Well for me you could buy the best Northern album ever double cd for starters and then you have Northern soul conissors (spelling is bad) and they did a modern one all of which would showcase a start. But once you get into it. You start buying all the cd's you find to have as much music as you can

Guest mel brat Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 (edited) Why does it always have to be "Northern"?? There's much more to Soul music than that, surely? Edited August 17, 2008 by mel brat

Oh....and it can be any era. I`ve got a great idea for completing your CD collection: take them all outside and use them as improvised frisbees to attack the neighbours` cat who has just crapped on your lawn. Then go out and buy some worn-out scratched original `60s vinyl RECORDS. It won`t do much for your bank balance, but your soul will be so much purer for getting the real thing instead of some digitalised, sanitised and soul-less replica of what the real music (and the real artists) were all about. Oh dear I think I must have offended at least 50% of the current rare Soul scene with this email. Didn`t mean to have a go at you personally Karen, but this is one of my dyed-in-the-wool old fashioned Casino opinions. Good hunting (for vinyl of course!) Casinoboy x

Guest Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 (edited) Hi Karen The only cds imo are the for Millionaires only cds, quality all the way....never off my car cd player .... Id agree with this, the Millionaires Vol 1 to 3 are excellent, But also add that a good CD for new converts as a source of oldies and some new(ish) some rare and some cheap tracks (allbiet circa 1995) is Northern Soul Time - Goldmine. Its good value as its a two disk set with 60 tracks on it and sleeve notes explaining the label and artist - so the importance of vinyl is apparent! It kinda covers all bases without getting ultra cheezy, has some nice tracks as well as some fun classics. she will soon out-grow it but its good for igniting that flame! And its usually on ebay for less than a fiver! J Edited August 18, 2008 by jhsoulnotts

Casinoboy x So by not buying something that will actually put money in the artists pockets, these artists that you profess to love so much, you are purifying your soul! Hmm another opinion worthy of the loony bin, I would suggest the real artists were all about earning some money for their art!! How about you keep buying vinyl and also buy these wonderful Kent and Soulscape CD's and pay the artists back for their hard work, maybe a bit radical but............ PS Sorry Karen, I know I should just walk on by but its difficult.
Guest Netspeaky Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 As even non soulies know the Motown sound the easiest introduction to the rarer/northern side of our Music is THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL - THE MOTOWN SOUND Vol 1 + 2, that should do it.

It was an amazing experience and probably the single most important factor that got me into the rarer end of soul music. it was the blue 'Cream of Vintage Soul' for 7 quid or something from Mr CD in Berwick St that was one of the things that did it for me (i then went back to get the Northern Soul one but they'd all gone) 1.: This Can't Be True - Holman, Eddie 2.: Try My Method - Lee, Jackie 3.: Human - Ad Libs 4.: I Wanna Testify - Parliaments 5.: You're Still In My Heart - Ruffin, David 6.: Harlem Shuffle '66 - Bob & Earl 7.: Never Alone - Ward, Robert 8.: Whirlpool - Mancha, Steve 9.: When A Man Loves A Woman - Banks, Darrell 10.: I Can't Break The Habit - Garrett, Lee 11.: Still Hungry - San Remo Strings 12.: Nothing No Sweeter Than Love - San Remo Strings 13.: Secret Agents - Olympics 14.: Another Dirty Deal - Incredibles 15.: We're In The Middle - Reynolds, L.J & The Relations 16.: I Wonder - Womack, Bobby 17.: I'll Never Forget You - O'Jays 18.: What Should I Do - Manhattans 19.: Hole In The Wall - Barnes, J.J. 20.: You Better Believe In Me - Reeder, Eskew 21.: First Time - Wills, Viola 22.: Settle Down - Flirtations 23.: Love - Beverly, Frankie 24.: He's Alright With Me - Mirrettes 25.: Gotta Right To Cry - Leavill, Otis 26.: I Thought You Were Mine - Natural Four 27.: Hit And Run - Reeves, Martha 28.: My Kind Of Woman - Starr, Edwin 29.: Just Tryin' To Please You - Thomas, Jimmy 30.: Gotta Draw The Line - Fletcher, Darrow 31.: If It's All The Same To You - Ingram, Luther 32.: Hiding In Your Heart - Wilson, Timothy 33.: Malnutrition - Fountain, James 34.: Bingo - Dynamics 35.: Stay Mine For Heaven's Sake - Holman, Eddie 36.: Look Into The Eyes Of A Fool - Banks, Darrell some really storming stuff on there and lots of tracks with vibraphone which i'd always loved as an instrument... also this 'Cooler Shakers' CD is a good one, despite the name: https://www.discogs.com/release/857051
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Well i would say DJ's guide to Soul allnighter has been released by DMC it has 28 tracks on each side so that's 56 songs for starters and has a nice mixture £20 but you can only buy it from DJ shops or such online places that deal with these type CD's. For us it has the obvious stuff like The Snake, I Get The Sweetest Feeling, Under My Thumb, 123, There's a Ghost In My House, Love On a Moutain Top and so on but there is some interesting choices like Why When Love Is Gone, If I Could Only Be Sure, Two Can Have a Party (Tammi's solo version), Soul Time, Am I The Same Girl, You've Been Cheating, Light My Fire (Stevue Wonder) and for some reason Mr Big Stuff only downside is for some reason Dobie Gray - The In Crowd is re-recorded version yet Out on the floor is original and 2 other re-recordings which are Barefooting, Be Young Be Foolish Be Happy

Guest posstot Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 not sure if its on cd but FOOTSTOMPERS on kent is by far my fave lp ....every tune is a classic...if i had to choose one record to own that would be it... Do you know,I, for one would totally agree with what this chap has said above. You don't have to compile one, It's already been done!! Kent footstompers, is juist about one of the best northern comps ever made!!

Couple of CDs that are good for non-northern fans are Up All Night vol1 and vol2. I helped Brian Rae decide on the final tracks for the up all night L.P. In particular i made sure he put the falcons on there, I'm a fool. Stood in hot waxx records in warrington!!. Which i am quite proud of, as back then i couldn't decide what day it was !!
Guest posstot Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 Karen, Here's a thought........And this goes to everyone who answered this thread. Why don't 10 of us ss's make a c.d of what we consider a good starter pack. Then perhaps put 4 or 5 more obscurer tracks at the end of said c.d.(rnb...northern....mod...modern...soulful garage..latin...etc) to give a TRUE opinion of sound/s. I'm up for it..anyone else?
Guest bazrico Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 Why does it always have to be "Northern"?? There's much more to Soul music than that, surely? northern or northern no other soul
