been playing some tunes for Ray's dance night at the Robin Hood to find a thirteen year old wanting to do some dancing. playing some soul music after 10 min this little chap was dancing, then he went straight into a one handed hand stand with a twist with floor work got to be good for Northern Soul.

Save all that acrobatic stuff for the Olympic gymnastics, and try dancing instead kid!

(Although if you keep practising you could win one of those 'Forrest Town' gym badges to sew on your tracksuit! :sleep3:)

Dancing is not always about the hand stands and stuff as you do. But like said he sould learn about the music before he can dance to it.

I think that goes to anyone wanting to get into Northern soul and one way to get younger people into this is why not play Modern tunes that are done by modern stars today like mix it with the Northern

John Legend, Mary J Blige, R Kelly, Brian McKnight, Amy Winehouse even Duffy have all been played out with one of there modern tunes.

Oh boll**ks! Lets not turn this into one of them 'Attracting new blood' arguments again! :D

I don't care how old he is 13 or 31 I don't like acrobatics and floorwork, never have, never will. I like dancing and dancers, not gymnasts, most of whom can't actually dance worth a s**t inbetween 'tricks'!

'nuff said.

Don't get into any discussion regarding new blood

You and I are to old, believe me. To do the floor work

& Give credit when it dooooooooooooooo lots of bottle

And he wants to learn, he loves the music we are playing and his

floor work Is good as it gets.

read it and weep thats what I say

Good on him hopefully he will enjoy dancing to the music after all thats what music is about.. they never actually made 45's for people to collect ...and hopefully he will never buy a 45 in his life like a few soulies out there who just go out to socialise and have a good time... and god forbid he ever comes on soul source where he will be dictated to... its not what you like its what fits in....

Good on him.. thats what I say.. if he wants to handstand on one hand ... who are we to judge... oh yeh forgot Soul Sorce Police Squad... :D

I don't think anyone on here is judging anyone, simply expressing ones opionion, either for or against acrobatics. Its called debate, not dictation or judgement, when one takes an opposing view. If he want's to do handstands, cartwheels or pull a rabbit out of a hat while balancing a chair on his nose, fine, but I still have the right to say "I think acrobatics are s**t" just as you have to say "Good on him" :D Agreed?

Paul , you're right about appreciating the music first, then the dancing will follow :D

But as for:

John Legend, Mary J Blige, R Kelly, Brian McKnight, Amy Winehouse even Duffy have all been played out with one of there modern tunes.

No "soul" singers in that group of 6 I'm afraid , the first four are Americans who happen to be black but are in reality nothing more than "pop" singers, and the last two are white pop singers who desperately try to sound black ... but fail miserably.

don't be daft, has nothing to do with soul or the love of it.People dance however they FEEL,thats the point.Don't dance to look good, dance to feel good.Lastly it's this sort of stuff that has always given the soul scene that kind of "it's a big joke" eliment :D .

such a shame so many negative comments already...hardly gonna make him attend one of those half empty gigs we all moan about !.....yes it could be called hip pop or whatever but at least hes dancin and not out on the streets up to no good...and what if his love for dancin came before his knowledge of soul we all came into this different ways and if the bug bites thats all that matters...

as for this style of dancin...it was a big thing back in the glory days,it did make northern dancin different(better) than most and i wish i could do it !...as long as it goes with the music....nothin better than watching some one flip about in the musical breaks and then back to he 'dancin' in perfect time ....and personally (as at stoke on a few occasions) even better when its a young lad who wasnt even around in the wigan days !!...BUT ..nothin worse than someone just randomly kickin and jumpin about all through a tune (as in last years dance off at blackpool !)

good on him.....lets spread the faith...not keep it !!!

Yes agreed... :D

I just think a 13 year old kid having to learn about the music before he can dance to it, is going a bit to far... in fact anyone having to learn about music before they can enjoy it is going to far...

but this is only my view, I just think you enjoy it, then if your intrested you start following it up :D

Yeah ive never been into the flipping/kicking aspect of dancing but must admit it looks great in moderation...I just tend to shuffle with the odd spin thrown in haha :D

Its not negative,its an opinion.

My opinion is the chances of this young lad still doing that and being into soul music oops sorry 100% northern in about 5-6 years time are very slim i think

I disagree...I think if his old man or mum is into it there is a strong chance of him at least retaining a bit of interest in the music

I know your toungue was formly in your cheek JMYTG and this is not aimed at you in particular... but I feel the need to stick up for Notts here  were not all throwbacks... (although you are right about there being a lot of em in Notts) there are just as many progressive establishments in notts, to balance out the school disco/Handbag/Bowling shirt/talc/Baggies venues... Just cause an events not in greater manchester does not make it shit!

live and let live man. Let them have the talc and bags and badges and baggies - If your truely into your music, It shouldnt make the slightest difference to you!

Heres Mand!!!

And I too live in Notts ( it's big place you know)

I feel the need to stick up for our county

I dont wear a circle skirt anymore I wear whats comfy to me usually modern styled clothing

(usually soaked in sweat by the end of the night)

folks can wear what the hell they want so long as they're enjoying what they do

I do dance to my chosen oldies genre of music this is why I choose oldies playing venues

I make no apoloiges fior this

We have a very very varied scene in notts there are oldies venues ...

Im sure there are elsewhere too ..stoke for one!

We have modern venues and across the board venues rarities venues and also a very good underplayed n/s venue that attracts folks from all over the country

back on topic

Let the boy do what ever "he feels" to what ever music he enjoys

I thought that your own interpretation is what we all do when we hit the floor to a n/s tune

Peace out!!

this also is true and these always get bad press from certain people in the said area. I would like to hear from certain people as to what Wigan was really like. Was it just full of these circus performers or did people go there to dance. Just to add i dont have anything against it,funny but true but i do hate it when folks are doing it throughout a whole record, does it go back to the fact that they cant actually dance

and the so called play something different events get slagged off and some idiots go and put an event on the same night as events that are well established because a few odd bods what to throw themselves around like a demented clown.

I agree with you about the acrobatics, 90% of the time, its kinda a macho thing, it reminds me of a mating ritual, little to do with the music, it justs masks no sense of rythm, and its done to draw attention to themselves...

There are so few people that can actually do it properly, that like you I wonder what actually passed for dancing at some past venues?

But when its done well, and its right in time and respectful of the music, its a very impressive expression of the "soul" thing...

Has to come from the music first though surely, otherwise you just get everything in the wrong place?
