Im sure the Delites was much later...........78/79........Pete ????.

Russ

You might be right Russ but a local lad (Neil Donkin) down here had a copy @ 74 because all he ever brought was big Casino tunes/Cover ups. But like I said the years roll by & the mind wanders..................

I just got back, I left early cos that's exactly what happened...................NOTHING!!!

Went over yesterday already and spent 4 and half hours watching the same 30 seconds being shot over and over (without being used as an extra)! Went back today and watched the same 30 seconds again...........................and still no "extras dancing" action, just standing around watching or standing around in a crowd scene...............but no dancing whatsoever and no music, so was bored out my mind most of the time. The only good bit was watching the authentic old timers doing their moves at the back and wishing I was at a proper allniter/soulnite. Wont be going to the 'recall' tomorrow.

Oh well, one lives and learns..........

Perdita

Sorry Perdia but I said that would happen way back in this thread. When your doing dialogue you can't have music playing just doesn't work. Just wait until the extras have to Dance with NO music for hours on end. This thread will be on fire!

I've actually got the first ever spin of Bernie Williams on tape, Richard plays it and predicts it'll go massive, I think it's early 75 but it didn't take off massively til 76 - as far as I can remember

No the Gene Woodberry version didn't appear til 77, not unless Sam was playing it way before Richard, and I did hear Sam now and again at places like Newcastle Tiffs and I never heard him play it. Richard played it covered up as William Lucas.

I must be suffering from dementia then,

but I swear I remember the delites AND

gene woodbury in Sam's hands at st.ives

that year. definitely 1977. it's also a record

I associate with him for some reason.

OK well put it this way - if St Ives had it, Wigan would have eventually got it, however long it took - and I went every week in 1978 until september and to the best of my knowledge it was never played, I first heard it played by Sam at the lafayette in wolverhampton after march 79...

Pete, is it listed in Richards playlist in (I think) the first issue of Northern Noise ? When would that be ? Assuming you can put your hands on your copy.

Naah, I trust your memory more than mine. I attended very few all-nighters in 1979, due to teenage love & its pitfalls.

my 1978 experience boils down to the odd visit to the Casino & Peterborough's Fleet All-Nighters. I associate that venue not with The Delites, but with a lot of crud (to my ears) like Teddy Vann, Phil Coulter, Holly St.James, Barry St John, Helen Shapiro, Peggy March etc, etc; Pity's there's not any play lists out there to settle the matter.

I think that was 79 Steve.

Noticed the starter of this thread was looking earlier on - so was sort of looking forward to reading what they had to say.

Why am I not surprised to find they've said a big fat nothing!

r.e. Saturday Night Fever

I saw an article ages ago about it, cant seem to find it now but will keep searching

Wendy it was a piece of Russ Winstanley rubbish - he said the film Saturday Night Fever was based on Wigan - in his book I think.

But NEVER believe anything those hasbeen 70s big name DJs tell you.

On a more serious note glad the filming seems to be going well and those involved are having a good time. thumbup.gif

Dobie Gray not out of place - classic northern in the 70s. It was one of the first northern soul records I heard and bought.

Absolutely no way was it played in 77...I'd bet my tea on it

my memories a bit shit datewise Pete, but I did try to buy 'Lover' with one of my first pay packets after passing out of Cosford in early 77 - a Soul Bowl list. So I'd hazard a guess it was being played somewhere - up until then, Cleethorpes, St Ives and nights in the North Mids were my haunts.

Bizarre thing is, I remember what i bought when I failed on the Delites...

JJ's Humdinger on a WD

Mikki Farrow Set my heart at ease - label was a bit scabby but still treasure it

The Major's Investigate PS

Thing is, I can't remember last Thurs night at all... unsure.gif

They're making a film, not running a nightclub. If they're paying you for it then you put up with it, if they're not then you're free to walk any time that you like.

I THORT NO MATER WHO YOU ARE ON A FILM SET THATS WHAT YOU DO YOU SIT AROUND ALL DAY AND WAIT ?? . ANIWAY I LIKE MANY OTHERS ON HERE SPENT SOME OF THE BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE UP THE CASINO WHEN I WAS A YOUNG MAN FROM 74 TO 76 AND MANY MANY TIMES AFTER. IF SOME BODY WANTS TO MAKE A FILM ABOUT IT GOOD LUCK TO THEM AM REALY PLEASED SOME BODY HAS EVEN BOTHERD TO DO IT . AM ALSO GETING A LITTLE FED UP WITH THE NEGATIVE BITCHING . I WOULD THINK IT FAIR TO SAY THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE THAT USED TO GO TO THE CASINO BACK IN 74 DONT COME ON TO SOUL SOURCE AND THERFORE CANOT GIVE THERE OPINION BUT AM SURE THEY WOULD BE OVER THE MOON THAT THESE PEOPLE ARE MAKING A FILLM ABOUT THAT TIME IN THERE YOUNG LIVES WEATHER ITS SPOT ON OR NOT' THE OTHER THING IS THIS TO THE PEOPLE THAT ARE DOING THE COMPLAINING "WAS YOU EVEN THERE IN 74" COZ AM NOT SO SURE ?? AS REGARDING THE DANCING DO ME A FAVOUR YOU COULDENT SWING A CAT ROUND MOST OF THE TIME AND IF YOU RIMEMBER LIKE I DO THE SO CALLED TOP DANCERS ALL DANCED IN FRONT OF THE STAGE . SO ITS NOT GOING TO BE A PROBLEM FILMING AS THERE WASANT THAT MUTCH ROOM HALF THE TIME FOR ALL OF THEM SHOWING OFF AT THE SAME TIME . ALSO THERE WAS SOME TERIBLE DANCERS BACK THEN AND SOME EVEN WORSE NOW .SO LETS GET IT RIGHT IT WASANT 1000 SUPER DUPER DANCERS EVERY WEEK . YEAH WE ALL KNOW SINCE THEN LOADS OF SUPER DUPER DANCERS HAVE EVOLVED BUT BACK IN 74 THEY SURE AS HELL DIDANT FILL THE PLACE I CAN COUNT ON MY HANDS THE ONE'S IN FRONT OF THE STAGE . ALSO IF THE FILM IS GOING TO BE TRUE THERE WAS OVER 2000 KIDS IN THE CASINO BACK IN 74 ALL PACKED LIKE SARDINES ON THAT DANCE FLOOR I WAS LUCKY TO SHUFLE ME FEET NEVER MIND ANTHING MORE , AS OTHERS HAVE MENTIOND IF THE FILM IS GOOD AND TRUE TO LIFE I WILL SAY SO 'IF IT AINT YOU CAN SAY IT AINT. GOOD LUCK WITH THE FILM

Wow, the reality is finally sinking in...they dont care about YOU...just USING you..

of course they are using us...thats why we went....not for pay...just to be there and take part ....and do you know what? we had a great time doing it,

they came round so many times trying to keep us informed as to what was happening, they appologised so many times for running late etc....

pay does not come into the equation, it's the experience and meeting so many like minded people who just want to have fun and do something worthwhile, chatting to so many fellow casino members and soulies from far and wide.... sure it's not easy waiting to get up and do something, it's hot, dry and tiring......but to be honest never boring , just interesting as to how much these people care about getting the scenes as accurate as possible, this takes time....i do not think anyone who attended would be so dim as not to realise that running behind with the shooting was a possibility..

too many people are so negative on here .... paul, sadly you for one...these people are trying so bloody hard with this film...and on a budget too...the film crew and actors are so friendly and fun...we wish them luck with the film, we really really do....

Well when asked about it, they said that they weren't sure that you do get paid for it  and they would have to look in to it. Yet its stated on the website that although you do not get paid to be an extra in the film, you will get travel expenses paid for.

Film making is a long, drawn out, boring process.

Anybody that's seen a 'the making of' programme knows that.

I'd like to think they'll get their cash in the end, especially if it's a small, right on, independent film company, which it appears to be.

At the end of the day there are those who are going to more or less enjoy the end product and those who are going to reject it for all the reasons we've been debating.

Andy, don't feel too traumatised about the flat cap ban mate.

The wardrobe chap was right about the beret though, plenty of those about, but later on, with badges sewn onto them. Riding the gauntlet of Betty taunts in town centres at chucking out time was an integral part of being an all-nighter goer. :-)

Are you for real?

"These people are trying so bloody hard... and on a budget..."

I'd like to bet the people who turned up are trying hard too... and you can be sure the majority of them are on a tighter bloody budget than this film company.

Ipsofacto should at least honour their promises and pay these people their expenses.

Jeez, you can't be thinking I'm out of order saying that surely?

f*** em !!!! some of them sound like they enjoy being miserable.

Or......... as I said before they cannot confirm tunes until the liscence is sorted, it is against the law.

We got Lou Pride already, so I can confirm that. Ady is sorting out some mirwood and other stuff for us.

Guy is sorting out Popcorn Wylie stuff, and the Scullsnaps should be easy as it just got re-issued.

Somehow I still think the "look at me, I really care about the scene" brigade will still not be happy though.
