i guess in truth those of us who are "attacking ",there words not mine, this film are all a little scared of what might happen ,wether this film is good or bad

I think Sarah this film has already created more bad feeling than anything I've witnessed before and it wouldn't surprise me to see it spill over into the scene itself.

My Mom rang me up and she says "Pete, you'll never guess what, they want people to be in a Northern Soul film" and she was quite disappointed when I said I already knew about it. Wonder if she's still held on to a pair of my 26" waist baggies

Does anybody actually talk about what's been posted on here when they go out?

I know I don't.

I can honestly say the only times I recall this site ever being mentioned to me when I am out is if someone says they are 'so and so' off soul source.

sorry beeks but i was up against it today and YOU sided with THEM

Hey, this ain't a confessional Sarah. If you've got some issues to sort out with Beeks then nip round and see him. thumbsup.gif

We're talking about a film here - I'm watching "Motor City's Burning" for the third time on BB2 as we speak........

The "Souled Out" film's got almost no chance with the stalwart traditional N.S. audience I reckon. There's simply too many things that they'll slip up on with SS'ers. After all, this is the most critical Northern Soul forum in the world - most of the time we can't even agree with ourselves LOL......

For a film company to get every single last nuance of the scene right is frankly impossible. Take it with a large pinch of salt on your popcorn and it may be halfway enjoyable.

If it finds an audience and turns into a huge international hit, it will fuel interest in a scene which, frankly, could probably benefit from a massive injection of youthful energy. Which, after all, is what fueled the scene in the first place.

Great thread though! The advance PR machine certainly got it's money's worth here but probably much more than they bargained for methinks........ laugh.gif

That's the spirit Sarah! thumbup.gif

It's a serious thing this Northern Soul.....

This film thing is a bit like the old "irresistible force meets the immovable rock" scenario, i.e., very likely to throw up some fault-lines along the way LOL.....

The film better be halfway decent! That's all I can say LOL.....

OK, "Family Guy" time now........I need to get a bit of distance........

There is so much begrudgery towards a film that no one has seen

And that is what makes this 15 page strong thread all the funnier.

It got me that hot under my 'off-me-tits' collar last night that I rang Keb in The Phillipines (his views always grounds me) and spoke the biggest pile of hard-to-follow shite as regards to this thread that you could imagine.

This thread has revealed some for where they are, brought out some insane deluded views, made me feel a whole lot less psychotic and kept me (and no doubt many others) entertained....so....on the back of that, I suppose it's a belting thread.

Long live NS!!

Well I can't wait for part three of the video diary to be posted up, I have just been having a look at thier site, my young un is quite keen on the mosher looking lad, but became disgruntled when northern soul was mentioned!!!! :)

So all this then was Russ Winstanleys fault then for giving the chap a book about the casino when all the guy was doing was having a quiet pint.... wink.gif

It's a film with a back drop of northern soul.

I think it would be nice for those who were there 'back in the day' to have the music as accurate as possible, out of respect. But I'm nto sure it's really that important to have it spot on.

I think it would be really nice if the music used was authentic 60s soul music, proper northern soul. You know, Tomangoes, Salvadors, Eddie Parker, Gwen Owens, Lester Tipton, that kind of thing. Whether it was played at the Casino in the year the film is set or not.

I think it would be cool if Sharon Jones + Daptone got used in some way. I think that would be very exciting for folk who might want to explore the music having first heard it through the film. It woudl be cool for Sharon + the team to get as much exposure as possible as well. That can't be bad.

It's not a documentary, it's a film. I think that's a pretty important point.

I can't see any bad coming from it, unless the music was so wrong as to offend those who were there, or those who care about what northern soul is and don't want it misrepresented.

I think it could be good for the scene, but can see the point of view of those who are sceptical.

I think Ian Levine should do an introduction like everyone else, the arrogant c***.

as someone who has been dancing to northern soul for the last 30 years [me , natch}. id be interested to know your opinion

q. at wigan did you notice any changes in the style of dancing over the years or did it more or less stay the same

Yes. In the early days the feet moved in a more shuffly style keeping more in time with the music. Then after a mass of newcomers arrived the "wigan walk" was developed, probably cause it was easier for the new people. Then after Quadrophenia the mods arrived and it all became a bit tip-toey and bouncy.

Must admit that I've only read a few posts, because it's not really entertaining me enough.

However, I was an extra in a film which was based around another scene (from the 60s  ).

After all the hoo-ha and 2 days and 1 night of filming, our bits were backdrop for less than 10mins of the movie - and that part focused so much on the central characters' drama in the club venues, that the background was superfluous.

'Normal' people who watched it, didn't even notice the things we wanted to get "right".

thanks , as i and many people have said so many times in this thread i wish the film luck and hope its a good one , if you read it through ,wich admittedly could take some time ,it isnt all "moaning" but actualy quite humorous in parts . i think everyone just wants it to be accurate thats all and show people dancing to original songs by original artists. its interesting what you say about the dancing cos in my humble opinion iv yet to see any two dancers with the same steps , wich i think makes the dancing all that much greater, whatever the era.

keb! this is rather sweeping. i never learnt to dance to "nobody but you" in my bedroom-to the detrement of my neighbours- to be classified with the "mods" or anybody else. i fell in love... :)

well ..... what a great day out, everyone had a ball, new friends ,superb atmosphere, fun ,but bloody tiring.......the film crew , director etc and all the actors were very friendly and mixed well with the crowd..... as for accurate? well not a bad try....for the most part....but then it could never be clinicly perfect..

the young "taught" dancers were very good and looked the part....and seemed to really enjoy what they were portraying....

overrall one in the eye yet again for the "soul police"..... you missed a cracking day with great people who seemed devoted to giving this difficult subject their all .... :)

What kind of a crap son are you? Like it would have hurt you to say "Gosh really mum? Thanks for that. You really are the world's greatest mum."

That would have earned you enough brownie points to forget mother's day and her next two birthdays.

Meanwhile, back on topic...

In my twin careers as an underpaid musician and overpaid computer geek I have upon many occasions become quite apoplectic as I watched actors pretending to play musical instruments or do impossible things with a computer. I suspect airline pilots scream at the screen "That's not how you pull off a 100 yard evasion roll from a UFO!", and psychotic cyborgs hurl large objects at the screen as they boom out "I will NOT be back!".

I think I'm witnessing the Northern Soul version of the syndrome right now. Listen people. It's a film. Good, bad, or deep brown and slighly twitchy, it will not split, slightly upset, or even tickle 'the scene' because none of us are stupid enough to let it.

...Unless you know differently of course...

There's a question I've wanted answering since the start of this thread, but I couldn't remember my password...

Did you all dance to music or is it being dubbed on afterwards? Or even worse, did you dance to music, but maybe not the music that will wind up in the film? I hate it when you see people doing stuff when they obviously aren't dancing to what we're hearing, even more 'specially when 'special moves' are involved...

tainted love

and one or two more.... mostly only in snippets.... they may or may not be part of the soundtrack , it was more over to get people dancing to set the scene...sometimes they cut the music and you would have to carry on in silence ... most odd :)

tainted love was used to get the clapping going etc...

the tracks they used were used more as "tools" to do the job .. more than the finished article...

it will be interesting to see what they produce from all the bits and pieces....

it is to be dubbed it would seem.....accurately i hope to the dance style and moves...

2 questions:

1.) is this the 1st time Mr. Darge and Mr. Levine agreed on something? It seems quite a positive thing that BOTH these gentlemen are supporting this film.

2.) a quote from the newspaper article - The boys would wear baggy trousers, usually about 28ins wide, with a four-inch waistband, made out of corduroy, or a light suit-like material.

How the hell would you dance all night with corduroy sticking to you? Would love to hear any info on pants.....why a 4 inch waistband, they must have come up quite high over the waist?

Thanks

That's dead right Wendy. But they were thin 'needle-cord' 28 inch baggies with a 4 inch waistband which were much more practical. And yes they did come quite high up the waist. I think we were obsessed with buttons at the time. I also seem to remember 'Kickers' coming in at the time and they worked quite well with the needlecord baggies.....

At least, we thought they did back then........... :)

I had a pair of corduroy denim baggies at one time, they were really heavy when sweaty but you tended to just ignore the weight and got on with dancing. As for the 4inch waistband, usually with 4 or more buttons was actually pretty comfy and held you in like a girdle, not thta we had much to hold in  . Kept you upright as well, which now i think of it is probably reflected in that sort of prancing upright stiffness of style you see in all those old Wigan videos.

When i first went to Wigan i borrowed a pair of gray felt Pegs off a mate. Now they really stuck when sweaty.

I just got back in the door at 1.30 in the morning from Stoke after a seven hour bus journey.

The day itself was absolutely brilliant. Here is why. First of there were so many friendly and genuine people there who just love Soul music and wanted to be part of something that pays homage to a scene they love.

Second of all I got talking to lots of people in their early twenties and some even younger who are is in to their Soul music as any oldtimer. I got a real buzz from talking to a young girl who was only about 18 or 19 and got in to Northern through her Auntie. To listen to her talk about tunes she absolutely loved reminded me of when I was a teenager and first heard this music. It was so refreshing to talk to somebody about the music and how much they love it as oppossed to talking to someone about matrix numbers, run out grooves and the legitimacy of playing re-issues :)

There was no snobbery just a love of the music. If she stays on the scene long enough she will have some people sneer at her for the 'oldies' she loves such is the fickleness of this scene. Hopefully it wont dissuade her from attending do's it never has with me. I love it all oldies newies the lot. A good tune is a good tune.

I have to say a big thank you to all the actors and crew and production staff who were extremely nice people and very down to earth and very repsectful to all of us.I had a few drinks with some of them on Friday night and they were a great bunch of folk. During the shoot the director acknowledged how much and how important the Casino was to a some of the veterans that turned up which was quite respectful I thought.

The day itself on set was very long but the time went quick. There was only one period of about 15 mins where we were allowed dance to a succesion of records relatively uninterrupted. The rest of the time it was dance for a half minute, cut, wait and go again.

There was even a period where we had to dance to a few seconds of Tainted Love over and over and then they would cut the sound and you would have to keep dancing. It looked a bit mad but I started playing tunes in my head and had a good imaginary bop to TON OF DYNAMITE and FRED HUGHES- I KEEP TRYIN' (one of my all time fave records) and a few more.

I was well chuffed when I was asked to come back for the week and they would pay my accomodation and have me as one of the main dancers. Unfortunately due to other committments I was unable to do it. However all in all a great day and hope to hear some more positive threads from those that were there.

My only complaint is that I wasn't allowed wear my flat cap as the costume guy said "they werent wearing those in 74 in Wigan". As I was only 1 at the time and wasn't there who was I too argue. He swapped my fine cap for a tawdry beret and I felt like a right Frank Spencer I can tell you.

Anyway off to bed now as need to recharge the battery for the Brighton Allnighter tomorrow.

G'Night everyone

Nothing wrong with 'Out on the Floor'. It has its place. I like oldies I dont get why so many people are down on oldies they are the foundation of our scene.

What would have pissed me of would have been if they were playing obscure beat ballads Romance Watson or some pile of turd like that.(Beat ballads have their place and I like some of them but only at the end of a nighter or chilling in my gaff)

Andy

Steady on mate, that reads a bit like an Oscar speech :D

:D:lol::lol:

Joking aside, there has been so much begrudgery, bad mindedness and negativity towards a project no one knows anything about and assertions made against the people involved in it I was just giving my experience which was all positive.

Im still holding out for the oscar all the same.
