Since you name me in person, allow me the courtesy of a brief response. Yes I am unashamedly a soul collector, it's a pursuit I have enjoyed for many years. I have thoroughly enjoyed amassing as many good records as I could, and hearing as much authentic black music as I can (from all eras not just the 60s and early 70s). My pursuit for records and hearing new music has taken me to many places, but I have enjoyed almost every minute of it. I have also enjoyed sharing it via numerous tapes and CDs for friends, endless articles in magazines, radio shows every week for 4 years and numerous DJ sets - so hardly "denying the music" as you put it. In fact I have forgotten more about soul music than many of the so called 'big guns' that spout off or get wheeled out every time the words "northern" and "soul" are put together in the same sentance. I remain very passionate about it all too.

Yes but no-one could ever accuse you of being open minded, not having read your past comments, Steve.

Sorry I missed your question to me, perhaps I should have cancelled my trip to the far east to wait for it.

I have just returned to the uk now, so please ask again.

Also the film crew have started filming under a tight schedule. I would tell them to stop until you have finished moaning, but I feel you might never stop.

Taking the piss for fun is ok by me, but I do worry why you and some others have such a chip on your shoulder ?

as someone who has been dancing to northern soul for the last 30 years [me , natch}. id be interested to know your opinion

q. at wigan did you notice any changes in the style of dancing over the years or did it more or less stay the same

Sorry, I don't mean to answer for Keb but by 1976 hardly anyone did acrobatic dancing except the people in the top right hand corner from Bolton - loads of people still did spins, but not much else. That was the main change. Also in 1976, the shuffling aka stomping dance was "invented", mainly for dancing to fast 70's records.

I'm a bit late to this thread but .....

It's a film. It apparently is set in 1974 with Northern Soul and Wigan Casino as a backdrop for the boy meets girl story.

Surely the only people who decide what music is used and in what context are the people who are being paid,to use their artistic discretion to determine what music / artists etc, by the people who have invested their MONEY in the project.

Let's not forget that films (just like the records we all love were) are in the main made to make money.

The fact is that we are in a time where someone with the required funds feels that Northern Soul has enough currency to make a viable project. I am sure it could just as easy be set against a Glam Rock background - mind you given Gary Glitter's current notoriety maybe not, as how could you make a movie with that background without featuring his music?

Anyway I digress. The point is, it's a movie. It's not real life, it's a movie. It's not a documentary, it's a movie.

Whether they use all original 60's & 70's tracks or not, it doesn't really matter. It's NOT a Northern Soul movie, it's a movie that uses NS as a backdop. Most people who see it won't even know what's original NS and what isn't.

And say they do use totally original tracks as a lot on here have advocated, then what? Will these only be acceptable if taken directly from original vinyl?

Someone (I forget who) said earlier it's all about the records. That is a whole other discussion that's been played out on here numerous times ad nauseam.

There's Northern Soul - which is about music with a particular beat (irrespective of recording format, era or colour of artists skin)

There's rare soul

and then there's record collecting

Sometimes they can get confused. And I think that's definiterly the case in some the posts on this topic.

As far as the movie goes. Go and see it (I will), don't go and see it. It's a movie, that's all.

I just don't like those CD's. Apart from the content of them which wasn't to my personal taste, I thought using the title Northern Soul 2007/8 was really a bit of a mis-description (if that's a word - it should be if it isn't) cos they didn't have anything to do with Northern Soul to my ears and didn't seem to be very representative in my opinion.

Now that makes me angry.

WHO ARE YOU to decide what qualifies as Northern Soul ????????

Get angry easily then doncha Ian, or is it because he doesn't like your product?

It's his Personal opinion, which he states quite clearly on several occasions, and to which he is entitled, just as you are entitled to yours. he can decide what qualifies as Northern Soul, because, like everyone else on this scene, we have the right to decide for ourselves what tunes we like and what tunes we don't. There are plenty of tunes I wouldn't class as Northern, but others do. That's what it's all about, personal choice. To say "WHO ARE YOU to decide what qualifies as Northern Soul???" Is arogant and imperious, IMHO.

whilst i think keb is a great dancer, the question wasnt specifically directed at him anyway, if the film people could take 10 minutes from their busy schedues{yes we know} to read this thread, and the previuos one theyd see that its lively, passionate and often funny. i hardly recall any"moaning"at all .

the one thing everyone seems to have in common is that they want the setting for the film to be accurate.

thanks pete for answering my question

I was going to suggest that everyone who has posted a thread - or + on the film will watch it.

But there is no suggest about it. You all will out of curiosty, critical analysis or because you wont be able to help yourself.

Those of you who deny you will watch it are kidding no one.

As for the music its what was played in 74 apparentley, so whats all the beef about.?

Lets just say that I am far far far far far from his biggest fan, and find his holier-than-thou attitude insufferable.

i'm looking at launching a film about an internet forum in 2008 discussing another film, the catch being nobody has seen the script to the second film.

The main theme would be around how it's not authentic to be showing people throwing paracetamol around a town hall foyer, with the action revolving around some kind of duel outside the overflowing toilets involving maybe swords or muskets, or if I can get enough people in military costume then two opposing teams - one with a nintendo wii and the other with a chieftan tank, to define the different era's.

I'll hum the background music during the love scenes, then Gavin Page comes on as Telly Savalas ('commando' style of course) in the tank and fires a huge cannon of fire against a black and white portable TV containing a picture of Ian Levine with a northern soul cd in his hand, as Ian is claiming it's responsible for the largest ever number of tesco club card points ever amassed since the power cuts. Winner gets to leave the internet forum in a hillman imp and obviously the Javells would be mentioned at some point, possibly in the opening credits or during a jostling door-entry scene featuring an old woman and a bloke that looks like an audience member from an old episode of 'wheeltappers and shunters', and the film crew would all need to be tw*ts and dress in clown pants.

Without giving away too much of the plot or contents, it's in a long-forgotten northern town. We're talking about huge groups of people throwing themselves around in a disused warehouse to the latest Duffy album, the main couple snogging at a bus stop whilst several Michael Jackson look-a-likes with one white glove on each moonwalk in unison in the background across a zebra crossing, plus the reformation of the black and white minstrels for authenticity of the good old days - or possibly even 'the good old days' series itself being revived for the scene on the pier, where the main villian of the film rides off the end into the sea on a raleigh chopper, subtly expressing his disgust in the crass commercialisation of allowing Anne Diamond into the venue once for a mini-nighter.

In the closing credits, a huge fire starts and we're left with the lovers standing in a council car park eating a meat pie. i'm convinced this is a goer if anyone has access to a chieftan tank?

Of course it matters, surley some may ask themselves, on the scene or not "is this Amy Whinehouse coming out of the club's speakers?" It's 1974, she wasnt even born then laugh.gif .

Think back to Quadrophenia if you've seen it and the scene where Stings in the Brighton Club, if the Jam was coming out of the speakers playing Louie Louie instead of the Kingsmen it'd affect the continuity of the film breaking (in filmy type terms) the viewers suspension of disbelief.

My only issue with all of this is use original artists in the right context, vital IMO.

I'm racking my brains wondering if there's a precedent for this type of film?

I seem to recall "Velvet Goldmine" was about the Glam Rock era and loosely based on David Bowie's career and, in fact, the title of one of his songs. However, Bowie didn't like the script and vetoed the use of any of his songs in the film. The film took a dive at the box office and make just $1.5 million on a budget of $9 million:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velvet_Goldmine

Also there was a film called "Shag" which covered the Beach Music scene which similarly bombed at the time but I never saw that, so I can't comment if I thought it was any good or not.

The best film I've seen about the music scene was Michael Winterbottom's "24 Hour Party People" which documented the rise and fall of Factory Records and the Hacienda. If "Souled Out" gets anywhere near that, I'll applaud it!

Sorry but this is where the confusion is. They have stated that this is a movie about a lad who discovers the Northern Soul scene in the 70's and falls in love with a girl whilst being in that scene. This is there explanation that they posted on northern-soul.com. When you question them about any part of the movie they then say it is a love story with Northern as a 'back drop' to the main theme. We all know it's Movie & not a documentory so can people stop repeating the same old statement. READ what they have said themselves and you will understand why this is so contraversial.

If you did a movie on elvis would you get Bono to sing the songs? NO. Footsie, Top of the pops, wigans chosen few...... yes.gif

Now that makes me angry.

WHO ARE YOU to decide what qualifies as Northern Soul ????????

You seem to always be angry

If you would stop spitting venom for a moment and read the posts, you'll see that I voiced an opinion (or two) which I'm quite entitled to do to be honest. I think I've said "in my opinion" in every post I've made on this thread. frusty2.gif

I'm not sure who decides what Northern Soul is as there are many different views. Maybe its you? Maybe its Russ Winstanley? Maybe its Butch? Maybe its KFC? Maybe its Beeks?

One of the reasons forums like this exist is to discuss that and other topics and heaven forbid that we all agree, that would be dull.

I know what I like when I hear it and so that's Northern Soul to me. Whatever is Northern Soul to you may differ from my view of it but I bet our views overlap somewhere.

Do you know what I think would be really good?

(Takes deep breath)

IMVHO it would be really good if you contributed to the discussions here instead of just blasting away at all around you. Please don't take that as an insult it isn't meant to be. I honestly think your views would be appreciated by most here despite what you think of the forum members in general.

Mods: Sorry if none of this is on-topic, I'll try and think of something in a minute or two.

[Edit] Just read Trevski's post (hat tipped again) sorry for repetition.

[Edit2] On-topic bit: I apologise for saying I hope the film projects fail, that really was a bit strong and wasn't what I meant, shouldn't wish failure on anyone. I meant that I would rather they didn't go ahead cos I can't see any good in it and I think it is a bit tacky, also the souled out one sounds crap from what the film makers have posted here. I hope they are as good as Quadraphenia and prove me completely wrong and that we celebrate them for the next 50 years and (cont on pg 94).

I would fully endorse this project and living in the north east may be able to help witha chieftan tank, the local police used them very often at the peak of the north east ram raid fad!Cant help with Ann Diamond however think shes had enough mince pies for all of us to be honest! Gavin is usually busy on the media threads but he would make a top Kojack type,I would be very intersted in the A team getting into this film at some point perhaps blowing the pier up would be awesome, and please include some greek wrestlers those boys are always up for it. thumbup.gif

i'm looking at launching a film about an internet forum in 2008 discussing another film, the catch being nobody has seen the script to the second film.

I can't comment as I've not seen any of the films you've mentioned, but I am curious about the last one - 24 Hour Party People.

The music?

Did they use cover versions in the film?

No they didn't Joan. But they did have live scenes with actors pretending to sing. ALthough that was actually more of a biography of the Manchester music scene to be fair. I probably wouldn't have compared it to Souled Out.

Although I am with you Joan, got to be original artists for the Casino dancing scenes if its to be authentic wink.gif

i think the clue is that they keep using the words 'back drop' when describing the northern content of the film, if you can understand that then you have your answer really

Yet they say this here : https://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/news/...il/article.html

TALENT-SPOTTERS will be at the Kings Hall tonight on the hunt for extras to appear in a film. They are working on the film Souled Out, which will chart the rise of the Northern Soul scene in Stoke-on-Trent during the 1970s.

This bit makes me feel a bit Tom Dick.

Mr Roberts, who was one of the original DJs at Wigan Casino, said: "Northern Soul is bigger now than ever. It is the accepted face of music for over 35s. Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson have all helped to introduce Northern Soul to a new generation".

I would fully endorse this project and living in the north east may be able to help witha chieftan tank, the local police used them very often at the peak of the north east ram raid fad!Cant help with Ann Diamond however think shes had enough mince pies for all of us to be honest! Gavin is usually busy on the media threads but he would make a top Kojack type,I would be very intersted in the A team getting into this film at some point perhaps blowing the pier up would be awesome, and please include some greek wrestlers those boys are always up for it. thumbup.gif
