Ady Croasdell Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 The director's post was a bit of a blanket condemnation of SSers, I think you got all shades of opinions on this. But then again what's the Casino like without a little bit of paranoia?
pikeys dog Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Wasn't just me who thought he came across as bit of a c-o-c-k then?
Jellybean Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 My daughter Gemma, as not long got back from dance practise at Stoke, not that she needs it but it seems there is a hell of a lot of practising to be done for most of them that were there. JB xxxKTFxxx

Jumpinjoan Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 I don't understand how some of you can complain that we don't know our arse from our elbow, when, judging by this forum, so many of you are fighting amongst yourselves, contradicting each other, and find little to agree upon. The thing is Shimmy you DON'T know your arse from your elbow as far as the soul scene is concerned. And as for us fighting amongst ourselves, contradicting each other, and finding little to agree upon.... how the hell would you know? Next you'll be telling us you've been logging on here for years to help you get more 'insight' for your film.

Guest Salford soul boy Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 You moaning load of wingers, Good on you for caring.. I will be in stoke as I got the call, at sparrows fart if need be. I dont care what history proves in both the film and what Shimmy had to say. What I care about is that I will be keeping the faith in a way that may be unique. This coupled with the rumour that "so is the sun" maybe on the sound track, is enough to get my arse down to Stoke. I will be the one with the Hanbags at Dawn t Shirt on??? PS Shimmy for a fee ( record of my choice in the film) I will offer you some Salford Protection from the soul police. Mark Newton LH soul boy Hello all Today was our first day of shooting at Kings Hall. It's gone really well, everyone is hyped and equally mesmerized by the quantity of work we have to do over the next 5 weeks. The thread very recently has been full of mirth, and it's great to see that so many forum users will actually be on-set over the next two weeks. Fantastic! In response to those who have been less than pleased with the idea of us making the film, and to those who are angered by the film's presence on this forum, I have a message from director Shimmy Marcus... -------- A view from the trenches: My name is Shimmy Marcus and I am the Director of 'SOULED OUT' Following weeks of speculation, assumption, rumour, gossip, sniping, bitching, arguing, pleading, and some quite outrageous accusations, I have decided (against better advice) to break my silence and respond to some of the posts on this forum. Why? Because despite what some of you may think, we actually do care about this film. We're not a Hollywood machine only in it for the cash, we are a small, enthusiastic, bunch of independent artists, dedicated to our craft of making extraordinary films that move people on an emotional level. Obviously I'm a little too busy to respond to each individual post (we start filming today) so I'm posting this general message in hope that it will put an end to all the speculation, and set the record straight once and for all. Here are the FACTS: This is not a Documentary. It is a fictional drama. I am not interested in making money, I am interested in making the most amazing film I can. EXTRAS Extras are not being threatened at gun point to appear in the film. They have freedom of choice as to whether they want to be a part of it or not. Extras are not required only for the Casino Scenes, but for many other scenes in the film which take place away from the Casino. This includes babies, and pensioners. DANCING Our lead actors/dancers have been training 7 hours a day, 6 days a week, some of them for 6 weeks now. They have trained so hard we've had one in hospital, and another in physio, such is their dedication. They have two dance tutors (1 was a Casino regular) and two choreographers constantly putting them through their paces. RESEARCH In an effort to make sure all scenes or references to the Casino are completely authentic, we have consulted over 50 people who were regular Casino goer's as well as countless others from the scene. Russ Winstanley, Kev Roberts, Keb Darge, Elvis Davis (Costume Designer), David Barrow, Reg Stickings, Yogi, Anton Ludwig, Dave Evison, Eddie Pillar, to name but a few. Yes, we've seen all the out-takes from the This England documentary as well as plenty of other footage, as well as countless others sources for research. We have attended numerous all nighters, including the recent one in the Kings Hall featuring almost 1,000 people. MUSIC We are consulting countless people connected with the music side of the scene, and the soundtrack is not finalised. It is NEVER finalised until after the editing has been completed, and even then, further changes are often made. We have been in consultation with a major music clearence company for over 3 years, and are also working with various Major AND Independent labels sourcing and clearing music. We have a database of over 22,000 songs at present. Apologies if we've missed a few. This film is not about the Original Artists. It is not a film biography. These Artists will be credited in the film where their music appears, and they will receive plenty of royalties under the strictest copyright laws, unlike the money they lost from countless bootleggers. If the film proves to be a popular success, they will invariable encounter greater record sales. Hopefully all Northern Soul artists will get much greater recognition, and financial rewards which is the very least they deserve for giving the world such beautiful music. And they did give it to the world, for the whole world to hear. That's what artists do. PUBLICITY We haven't come on to this forum for publicity. You people are the first in the world to find us, we don't need to publicise with you. We joined the forum in the hope you could contribute positively. As crazy as it sounds we hoped you might even get behind us. Or at least wait until the film was out before baring your teeth! AUTHENTICITY If you believe that I shouldn't make this film because I wasn't at The Casino, then I guess Spielberg should never have made Schindlers List, Attenborough shouldn't have made Ghandi, and George Lucas should never have made Star Wars (I don't think he lived in the future.) I don't understand how some of you can complain that we don't know our arse from our elbow, when, judging by this forum, so many of you are fighting amongst yourselves, contradicting each other, and find little to agree upon. If this film takes off, it is you people the world will be coming to, to find out more. Show them some love. Isn't that what this is all about? AND FINALLY I want to thank those of you who have offered us good wishes, and are reserving judgement until you see the film. There are a great many genuine people out there who love this music and this scene, and believe only good things can come from sharing it with as many people as possible. Isn't that what we do when we hear a great song? Share it with others? We will continue to work as hard as we can to make an amazing film. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm required on the set. See y'all in 5 weeks. Shimmy.
Naughty Boy Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 just LMAO the mention of bootleggers ..... with a couple of those hes named OMFG .... Ah the 70s thank god for the music as the clothes were shocking. You can put your ballgown back in the closet cinderella
Guest Beeks Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Ah the 70s thank god for the music as the clothes were shocking. You think you had it hard Mark? Spare a thought for this teen of the 80s

Bet the design bloke 'Elvis' couldnt recreate mine for that authentic look .....
Guest kebdarge Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Ok so what you're saying is........the people who can dance are too old to appear in the film, and the people who are young enough to appear can't dance. Sounds like a bit of a stalemate to me. If the dance scenes are authentic they will be shot in semi darkness which will allow some licence as regards age.......keep them in the background and thirty to forty younger dancers in the forefront - sorted. This film could be a wigmakers dream Can I just say I have been teaching Martin Compston to dance like I used to for about 6 weeks. He now pisses on me, and I like to think of myself as still being passable as a dancer at Wigan. His drive and persona fairly remind me of all my old mates from those days. Had he been around back then he would have been one of the best there. On the music question, I am helping Shimmy source tunes that were big around 74 for the scenes at the Casino with emphasis on publishing that is still owned by the artists instead of giant labels. Lou Pride, and Popcorn Wylie being the fist two we are chasing. I am sure those will work out, but the production company cannot legally say until it is all signed and sealed. I also remember taking a fancy to many girls back then, and attempting chat up lines. It wasn't my main reason for being there, but I did still manage to respond to my natural instincts. I ain't seen the film yet, but what I have seen has made me happy to be involved. Wait a moment, the reason I first went was because I met a girl up in Elgin on holiday who was into northern, and she invited me down to Wigan to meet her again...so there... a similar thread to the movie.
Guest sarahleen Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 You can put your ballgown back in the closet cinderella violins play as a lowly dancer shuffles{pardon the pun} and exits stages left

Guest Salford soul boy Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Keb I was always told that an unwritten rule at any Northern event was no kopping off. Its reassuring to know that I am not the only one that bent that rule and continues to do so. I am to young to know what was hot and not in 74 in wigan, give us a hint mate. Guest sarahleen Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 got question , been wondering about this for a few days . i only went to wigan for he last 18 months . did the style of dancing change over the years, and how or did it stay more or less the same ?

Prophonics 2029 Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 (edited) What have you got against romance??? The film isn't about the northern soul scene. That would be far too sleazy. Best regards, Paul Mooney Speak for yourself, I met and had a few good relationships at The Casino and all not based on how much gear she could take on one night out. Guest woznotwos Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Wish you well for the film , i for one will be curious enough to want to view it and am not complaining about the scene being used as a backdrop. It will be interesting to see how you interpret it. However i may praise or slate you afterwards, hehe.
