Silvetti-Spring Rain

Sounds like it falls into the never to be revived category but I bet this one would hit the mark again with any younger members of the audience.Heard it out about 3 years ago and you know what - it sounded bloody good.Bizarrely it sounded fresh (no I wasn't half hissed!)

somebody played l j johnson at brid this year couldnt believe it

kev

Kev - in I think it was late 78, Evison reactivated LJ Johnson and it went truly massive again, three years after initial plays. I don't think I've heard it played since but a lot of those records have actually dated pretty well - Barbara Pennington's 24 hours a day and Running in another direction being two absolute corkers. In my opinion, obviously

Have been playing it in and around D¼sseldorf for the last couple of months.

Lovely tune.

always thought this was a great record. remember soul sam giving it a few spins around 1980. flip it over for ace mid tempo dancer(imho) that would go if given the spins. think it's called "it takes a woman to love a man". also re ral donner. he died a few years back and yeah he made his living as an elvis impersonator. i think he was in elvis' band at one point but i could be wrong. i usually am!!

L J Johnson did 24 hours a day i think it was in 79 or 80 good version.

I still love Barbara Pennington, both!

slightly off topic but while the rotund producers mid 70s offerings are being mentioned on this topic can anyone else remember him being on the stage at wigan casino on a saturday night/sun morning mid 70s hurling copys of one or some of his 45s must have been weakspot/24 hours a day???,so who invited him?? because this was about the time of the wigan/mecca punch up thingy and i remember some of the 45s being hurled back at him, happy days, :ohmy:ph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gif

Possibly the night that the "Chicago Roadshow" were in attendance, performing live. LJ Johnson, Evlyn Thomas & Barbara Pennington(I think). Mr Levine was giving away those "Tomorrow" demos of the tracks. I had a Doomsday Voc/Inst.

I went to a night a few years ago (sorry I'm too shy to mention which one.. tongue.gif ) and a lot of the records mentioned on this thread were played including the Man about the House theme (condition red... ). For a one off it was a bit of fun but I got the impression that it wasn't a one off for that venue. I've been to a few oldies nights but this was something else. Also on the list played that night were:

Boogie Man Orchestra -Lady lady lady (instrumental)

Gentleman and their lady - Like her

Apples peaches pumpkin pie - Jay and the Techniques

and what's that one called that goes "standing at the station, waiting for the number 8 train.."..is it Beverly Ann?

Anyway....it seems that one person's "never again" is anothers "yes please" laugh.gif as the place was packed!

Yup, "He's coming home"...have to say, still one to get the ladeeez on the dancefloor - and quite a few guys as well. Truthfully, I'm bored with playing it, but still have to dig it out occasionally!

Tend to agree Pete.. I wish that sort of 70s was a bit more fashionable these days.

One or two more from 75/76:

World Column, So Is The Sun

Babe Ruth, Elusive

Black Nasty, Cut Your Motor Off

Esther Phillips, What A Difference A Day Makes

Al Foster, Night of The Wolf (awesome!)

and then there was: Barnaby Bye- Can't Live this Way, Biddhu- Exodus

This should get played more.

Eh? A couple of years ago you couldn't go in a venue (or a lift, for that matter) on the east side of the country without hearing Millie Jackson!

BTW.. has anyone mentioned Wayne Gibson yet? :D

I loved Gentleman and Their Lady (preferred the short version)
