Hi Guys

On nearly a weekly basis I hear someone tell me that they are starting a new weekender or thinking of starting one in the UK. How many are planned next year, are we not in danger of overkill.

It's a tough call I know and everyone has the right to do what ever they want. But from the point of the greater good, as with local soul nites are we not reaching a point when there are so many that everyone suffers with attendees being spread to thin.

Not wanting to say you can't do this or that, as the next new one could be the best one yet to appear. But again when people start something new do they think what will be the impact on other events. I know when we looked at starting Berkeley, we spoke to all the other event promoters locally and tried not to clash with other simular events nationally. Although ours is not a weekender the principal is the same we did think about the events impact.

Already got overkill, some friends of ours used to go out ever week. Now they only go to weekenders.

I sure there are lots more people like em. There are some great weekenders up and down the country but there are too many.

It's a point, Dave, that gets Weekly coverage on this site, and I don't think there's an easy answer. On one Hand yes there are tooooooo many venues, but on the other hand we don't want a situation where a few govern what we can and can't listen to when we're out. I've been offered venues, and wouldn't even contemplate starting an "oldies" venue in our area at the moment, as it's reached saturation point. Having said that, the 60's "newies" and "R & B" end of the market is very poorly catered for in our area, except for a few D.J.'s at Berkeley (Andy D & Arthur Fenn) so I'd welcome somebody putting on an event aimed at this sector.

Valid point mate. wink.gif We choose they same ones every year cos they have worked for us. Its not to say I wouldn't mind trying a few others but it runs a tad expensive if it turns out to be a bit of a wash out. I don't mean music wise I mean attendance wise. If it is rammed then that is all you can ask for, but you can only go to so many ----unless you are a rich so and so biggrin.gif

As I said in my mail, everyone is free to do what they want, but do they ever concider the impact of their decisions.

On another point, I slighty disagree with you about Berkeley. I know you haven't been yet, but at the last one in addition to Andy and Arthur, Ady play nearly all 60's and a fair few 'newies, as did Maria, Sean and I put a fair number into my set as well. But the whole point of the event is not to have sets completely dominated by any one style. In fact if there was a complaint, it was that there wasn't enough 'oldies', but even with that, one man's oldies is anothers newie. I know you hope to get along soon. wink.gif

I agree with where your coming from, Dave, and I can't really judge Berkeley, as I ain't been, but I think we're all agreed that New "events" are a good thing, as long as they're "bringing something to the party", which Berkeley certainly is, but many aren't - just diluting what we've already got.

Hi Mark, which ones did you go to?

What did you think of Burnley the other week?

I had to leave early to pick my Daughter up. (teenagers?)

Good point, it's a personal thing, maybe? I'm sure from some of your posts on other threads, Terry, that in your opinion there's at least a few venues that aren't contributing anything to the "scene"

hello Des,not sure anyone has to contribute anything after all it's a night out.My problem has always been about people who are false and in a lot of cases downright liars. Better just say do not mean anyone on this thread ha ha lol biggrin.gif

I know what you're saying, and I think you know what I'm "clumsily" trying to say, that perhaps we don't need more of the same.
