Jimmy A Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 (edited) Just seen it and night nurse is still guest dj,who said not so long ago that he was as much in the dark as everyone else. I will put money on this as well, there will be a few local djs who get invites to go and do a spot and shall i tell you how many will say no...none,why? because its not going to ruin their night. What i like about these local events is when you read on lookbacks on here, people say how friendly people are and how great they are how welcome they make you feel, they forget to mention the knife they going to throw at you the moment you leave Edited August 11, 2008 by JMYTG
Chalky Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Because I don`t go to some of the events does not mean I wouldn`t like the music Chalky...I have an extremely busy life which means my opportunities to go to `different` venues is limited. I support Pilsley because its Chris` `do` and some of the local ones because of the obvious but to be honest this looks to me like there will be fewer and fewer of these due to changes to music policies . Shame but thats the way it is...Perhaps better to go out less and travel further I`m thinking I never said you didn't or wouldn't like the music, just it wouldn't be what you are used to hearing when out and about. I agree with your last comment, I pick the venues I go to now for several reasons and when I do go out I don't really want to be disappointed with tired music policies, half empty venues cause of the number of venues within an hours drive etc. Hope to see you at Sean's venue when it does finally go ahead.
Wiganer1 Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Hiya Jim See you up to it again that's my boy, trouble is about the same old, that's what most folks want around these parts, you try playing something different and wait for the" why don't you play some norfan mate" I was on at J20 on Saturday played a few different tunes,(see playlist) nothing rare mind, but not many in, why? all at the oldies do a few miles away, and of course if your numbers drop cause of your music policy what do you do? Take care mate and see you soon maybe at Bestwood. Barry ======== IM SURE IF PAT AND SHAUN KEEP PLUGGING AWAY IT'LL COME GOOD FOR THEM AT LUTTERWORTH... IF ATTENDANCES MATCHED EFFORT PUT IN AND RECORDS PLAYED IT SHOULD BE PACKED ALL THE TIME AT NUNEATON WE MAKE NO APOLGIES FOR PLAYING OLDIES AND IF THATS WHAT PEOPLE WANT WHATS THE PROBLEM..? WE HAD ROCKY ATTENDANCES AT THE COOP AT THE BEGINNING BUT WE'VE BUILT IT UP MY MIXING THE DJS UP AND ALTERNATED OUR NIGHTS ACCORDINGLY FROM 100% OLDIES TO ACROSS THE BOARD...LIKE YOU HAVE TO ..THERES NO EASY RECIPE FOR SUCCESS AND YOU HAVE TO KEEP PLUGGING AWAY JUDGING BY THE PLAYLISTS,THERE SOME GREAT QUALITY RECORDS BEING SPUN AT J20 AND I HOPE THAT THE PROMOTERS GET THE PUNTERS FLOCKING IN AT FUTURE EVENTS. REGARDS MARK
Cunnie Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Always have to laugh at how negative everybody can be on threads like this. Problem ain't that there are too many venues. The real problem is that folks simply don't get off their arses & support the venues. Seems that folks would rather stop at home & moan that there is too much on rather than getting out every weekend. You'll all be moaning when there's now't on for miles around.

Just looked at the post in events and no surprises with the guest DJ's. I reckon a few on here could predict some future guests from the oppurtunist "you-do-mine, I'll-do-yours" brigade.

Mak Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Sorry , just can't get my head round this , same old DJ'S playing same old music to the same old punters , who all meet up twice every weekend hugging , kissing and shaking hands like they have not seen each other for 20 yrs . It is so predictable and the EM is in danger of isolating it's self from the rest of the counrty. There are a lot of knowledgable DJ'S and punters in the EM , all you have to do is expand your mind and listen to what is being played elsewhere . There is no room for anymore venues and no room for ''promoters'' who think they can run a venue. I ask myself these questions quite often 1) Why do these venues NEVER publish playlists 2) Could these promoters jump in and do a ''spot'' if they got let down To put it in a nut shell NO more venues , there ain't anythig new to offer out there. It's all being played around the counrty . Even in Notts and Derbys if you only cared to look
Guest Fatius Bumius Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 I totally agree with Mak. A lot don't put playlists up for fear of a few on here tearing it apart and chanting BOOT BOOT BOOT or SAME OLD SAME OLD Mindya, all said and done, they do put photos up in the Gallery to show off the gymnasts amongst them and in the Lookback mention the night was a packer, good turn out, best one yet, but when looking at the photos there's a bit of Martha Reeves going off ...."No One There".....no one there...... the odd one i've noticed 15-20 folks maximum in a room with capacity to hold 150+. Going back to Bridgets original post, who exactly is asking for another venue? Maybe it's a case of someone egging another on, "Go on mate, you ought to run a venue" and the person asked thinks great, some money to be made it'll be a packer and I get to be a Northern Soul DJ. There may be an underlying reason behind folks asking and egging another on, i.e. put a spanner in the works for established events, get their backs up a bit, dilute the numbers and someone else takes the flack for setting up another night while the peretrator sits back all smug . Before setting up another night the cynic in me would be asking myself why said person asked for another night, what's their motive, and if it's that lucrative and going to be a massive success why don't they put their money where their mouth is and run one themselves ? Cunnie says get off your arses and support venues instead of sitting at home moaning, I wouldn't be sat at home moaning if a soul do was worthy of my £3 Ones I support play what I like to hear, the ones I don't support, with the exception of one or two (one being the Attic, that's cos Mansfield Cabbies are out to rob me ) are because they play the same old crap week in week out. Once went out on a Friday night, picked flyers up for the Saturday night, low and behold, the same DJ's where DJ'ing on the Saturday at another venue 5 miles down the road. I'd just heard the drivel they delivered and couldn't hack a repeat on Saturday Liven the Notts scene up with some DJ's from out of the county, pay them the hourly rate they deserve, liven the gaff up with some fresh tunes and only then will things start to turnaround. Stop the You Do Mine and I'll Do Yours For Free approach, it's pants.

It does seem that the East Midlands is a war zone... I can only speak as i find and i take my hats off to the Attic Boys.. Not been to any other event down that way as yet... It would be good to see the people in question come and defend themselves , i'm sure that i would if i was being talked about in this way... Who are the djs/promoters in question for all of us who aint from this part of the world????
Spacehopper Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 as ive said before on threads about this subject im glad i live in bristol !!....although northern isnt "big" here we only have 2 monthly soul nights who do their best NOT to clash AND promote each others gigs....and they ARE different...getting together has been going for years on a saturday and plays northern and modern so when we started go go children ,back in january,as well as going for friday, even though we know its not such a good night ,we dont play any modern or even 70s...strictly 60s AND we play a little british beat and even a couple of ska and rocksteady...we dont play ANY boots...and it seems to work,we are gradually building up support without doing any damage to getting together who we are FRIENDS with !!.....people it can be done ! for those of you who are in areas with too many nights and half full halls why not try a 'soundclash' of some sort,if you dare!....as with reggae sound systems, two promoters in the same venue on the same night, maybe in the same hall or maybe two seperate rooms and let the dancers decide...the room or djs that no one dancers to has to give up their night ....just an idea...
Kjw Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Maybe the people involved should come on and say what they mean by something different. As for asking for another event i think a handful should give up the ghost and nob off IMO of course I don't think they would know how to begin answering that question Jim. Half the people who set up these new events know very little about the broad spectrum of soul music and haven't got a decent set of records to their name - mostly boots / reissues. I've noticed in the Events section that the people who run the Robin Hood night at Edwinstowe have decided to have an additional night this month. Why??? And have they thought to speak to other promoters who they're going to clash with - Bestwood, for instance, which is firmly established.

Totally with you on that.Notice that not many have come on here to defend themselves. "broad spectrum of soul music" they would have a clue what you are on about there mate Bestwood has always taken stick from the Baggies Brigade dont know why because its down to the guest dj to get the floor going. Its an open box at bestwood, you can play whatever you want and most djs that go there do,WHY because they too are sick of the same old stuff but that just seems to alienate people, which goes back to having a broad spectrum of soul music. Im in a way grateful to some of these events because ive saved a shed load of cash from stopping in Edited August 12, 2008 by JMYTG

Well Kev that really does take the biscuit , not totally suprised though. Some of these ''promoters'' would do better having a barbie and playing a few records
Sharon Cooper Posted August 12, 2008 Author Posted August 12, 2008 You know what? It won`t change because this group of people are fixated and blinkered to what is going on around them. They think they are the guardians of Northern Soul and Wigan casino was, is now and will remain for ever. They have not moved on (However in saying this I know that many many of them never actually entered the hallowed doors of the Casino and wouldn`t know a Cleethorpes sound if it fell from the sky and landed on their Polyveldts!) They will continue to put on events, believe the lies that others say, continue in their own ` way of life` because lets face it they obviously haven`t got much of a life outside of this `scene` and from the state of their grammar and spelling abilities are unlikely to move on from what they`ve already got. The honest fact is that if they feel that walking out of their front doors and letting people see them dressed like some throw backs to a bygone era is `normal` then putting on an event that blantantly is set out to rival another is nothing to these people. I am not just speaking about the night in question here but others that have sprung up recently. I treat these people really with the contempt they deserve; They are after their own ` 5 minutes of fame` because, lets face it, they aren`t going to achieve it any other way in this life. Come on then promoters/DJ`s of new venues lets hear the other side of the story...And whilst I`m on a roll; whats this with now changing your night which is on an established night to clash with another in that month because you happen to have something else on the night your do should be on...This to me is a new phenomenon and happening more and more. Despicable IMHO.

Also it is up to other local promoters not to dj at these places, think there is a fat chance of that,as di said earlier there is too much of the old you dj at my do and vice versa so dont know what the answer is there.

Guest Fatius Bumius Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Quite easy to suss out the reason for the date change. 25th October : Kings Hall and Empress Ballrooms. I'm only guessing but the crowd at the new do in Sutton would be the crowd that would most probably travel to Stoke or Empress and they can't miss Stoke, nor risk the loss of any potential punters who'd always go to Stoke no matter what. It's also Lifeline and the 100 Club on the same night but doubt folks who are promoting or attending Sutton would be interested in opening their ears to the "darker side". Can't understand them running it on the 18th when there's Pilsley and Driving Beat at Sixhills on. Seems that the 18th's been favoured just to pi$$ a couple of regular soul do's off. Basically 3 nights within easy travelling distance will put folks off going out all together because they can't decide which night to go too, so will turn round and say bugger it, i'm stopping in and all nights will end up suffering. What's that gun fire Chris ? Sh*t or chewed up Polyveldts ???
Jimmy A Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Im still waiting to see who ASKED for this new night to be put on .....not saying its true but i do think sometimes that all this goes back to when a certain local dj was resident at pilsley then they got rid of him, things aint been the same since.im most probably wrong but with these people piss & pot always spring to mind and they all follow each other around like little lost sheep As for bestwood,as said thats going through the mill now. Been goin 6-7 years and steve who runs it set it up 5 times a year so it dont clash.Im sure he will be glad to see that he is being paid back with the same kindness
