Whilst I sympathise with Russ's Scott of the Antarctic like endeavours to get to Wigan each week I think he should spare a thought for those of us who arrived by car from 45 minutes away. Many's the time we were unable to keep the Chablis chilled due to the primitive air conditioning available in most models of cars on the market during that period. And of course there's nothing worse than cucumber canapes when the edges begin to curl. But we were no less committed!!

Im definitely with the cynics, going off previous experience, and I think it is important to try to capture the moment but as regards to the choice of music provided by Jeff I think it's going to be awfully difficult to fit them into the film chronologically. Leaving aside the fact that there's quite a few that I don't remember hearing at all at Wigan, although I didn't go into Mr.M's, unless he sticks to titles that "shout" Wigan the soundtrack can only provide an accompaniment to the action/emotion on the screen and can in no way identify the time and place. Not to labour the point but you wouldn't have Connie Clarke followed by Executive 4. So to get it right you need a hell of a lot of research IMO.

Finally I was 21 when Wigan opened. Looking back I have no idea what I was thinking or feeling at the time. I think some of us now are transposing our attitudes built up over 20-30 odd years since the Casino closed onto how we were then. Im not saying that we weren't into it passionately back then but I think there is a difference and we can't expect the film maker to reflect the hindsight we now possess. Hope that makes sense.

Russ n Richard on the line up, posters that resemble the old Wigan ad in Blues n Soul............the media machine of the film industry would almost guarantee the largest attendance at a NS event ever...........

Well, good luck to the lucky promoter this could be the 'above ground' NS scenes grande finale...........the big bang.............eeeeerrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmm g.gif ????????.

Wouldn't it make sense to use one of the original Dj's to research the music rather than leave it to memory? Richard Searling seems an obvious candidate. The oppurtunity here is to have a sound track that reflects the times of that specific movement. Which would go a long way to explain to people not into the scene why it was the way it was. As the characters represent that movement and I guess the story line revolves around that scene surely it must be paramount to have the right back drop to explain the story. Why create the 70's down to the smallest detail ie: clothes,cars, hairstyles, dancing etc then not pay the same attention to detail when it comes to the music......

Duffy Amy winehouse please no the thought that these people will now be linked to being northern artists makes my heart sink personally looking forward to the film and with keb darge influence on the dance scenes if not more, should make good viewing, wonder how this film will effect the scene initally as in record prices attendances at club nights etc dealers are surely rubbing there hands in anticipation, will there be a welcome to newer blood or will it go deeper underground :huh:

I think they are paying attention to detail regarding the music. From the list I've seen they are trying to use the right tracks - subject to obtaining sync and master licenses.

But remember it's a feature film, not a historic documentary, and it needs to have a wide appeal to justify the budget. The addition of new tracks by well-known artists can only help.

The inclusion of authentic northern soul tracks in films can only help bring the music to bigger audiences. Clubbed (soon due for cinema release) has some northern soul tracks and Crying With Laughter (currently in production) also has a couple.

I actually dropped a line to Jeff re some potential help in licensing some authentic Northern Soul tracks from people who we know own them, but he's not involved with that area apparently.

He told me that the business affairs people @ Ipso Facto films are the ones to talk to, so I put a call into both the London & Newcastle offices but couldn't elicit a reply from either number (what else is new LOL).

The fact is that they could assemble a brilliant soundtrack @ probably a quarter of the expense of licensing in Paul Weller, Duffy and Amy tracks, but I don't know if they understand that. There are loads of 100% key Wigan monster tracks which are still independently owned or controlled and which historically should be in the film.

What would I do? g.gif

I'd theme the movie so that the likes of Amy, Duffy and Weller are used in the non-authentic parts of it, i.e. the intro, title sequences, incidental scenes and outro etc. Remember they're thinking of cashing in on the popularity of the above artists and probably think it will be sexy to use those songs in the film. Plus they want to flog a cool soundtrack presumably.

All of the above would probably work well in sympathy with......

.......using the original recordings for the Wigan Casino/Northern Soul specific historical type scenes, many of which can be licensed relatively cheaply and would give the film to stamp of authenticity for the hardcore devotees.

Best of both worlds if you may. Not perfect but probably the best you could hope for in this day and age! :huh:

However, I guess they have an agenda and ultimately they're not aiming at the S.S. audience but rather the 14-24 demographic which actually goes to the movies! laugh.gif

At the end of the day, if those that went to Wigan were commissioning the film with their own money, they could call the shots. The film has got to have a wide(ish) appeal in order to justify the expense of doing it and that is the hard commercial truth, I'm afraid.

How about this. The film opens with Amy, Duffy, Weller stuff....... Young lad brings his girlfriend home and says "Dad, we're just going up to my room to listen to some soul music. Dad. "Call that shite you listen to soul? When I was a lad ...........screen goes all wobbly as viewer is transported back to the 1970's etc. :lol:

Absolutely..............'jumping' the train was part & parcel...........we would jump from the train as it approached Wigan station, then over that wall & you would be holding your breath, as you didnt know if it would be the Bill or the locals waiting for ya, on the other side, you either got nicked or a potential kicking. Even if you managed to successfully avoid that, then as we walked up to station road, it was around closing time for the pubs, so it really was a gauntlet, at the best you got loads of abuse...............but we were the 'special ones' 8 hours on the train & all of that, never once made me think twice, it was all part of the fun & worth every minuit for the magical time we had in WC, in fact its only with hind sight that many of these things, including getting turned over for ya gear by both the bouncers & the big lads & the fact that there were always a large percentage of DS around, even sink in, it was just the norm for a weekend of Northern/Rare Soul. it was about passion for the music, a passion that still burns within me to this day........its why I spend a large part of my life in the pursuit of vinyl, new vinyl mostly, trying to discover a new unheard track or a truly forgotten gem & why Im constantly deconflicting family & work life to continue to pursue what after all is an alternative life style, many of us have lived the life all of our adult life & continue to do so,........................this is why the film has to be done properly, they owe us that much, we & the music have been let down by the media so many times, by selling out & dumbing the scene down to make it palatable for the mainstream, I hope & pray that this film really gives an acurate portrayal of the scene, the music & the times.

I'm losing interest in this but what will be will be.

I really hope they get it right and I've no problem admitting I was wrong and eating humble pie.

I've just had a phone call from one of the casting dudes (thanks Mr Quinn for giving my number out! :thumbsup::lol: ) seemed like a throughly nice young man though i did laugh when he asked me if i knew of a 'Wigan Casino'! :lol:

I just phoned my mum to tell her that i might be an extra in the film & she asked if she could come along to be an extra "as one of those who just watched?" laugh.gif

Ha ha a friend of mine was also asked about being an extra in this film. She turned it down because she felt she was too old. I told her she could play Hilda Woods on the door then and she thumped me!

Theres enough tarts in 6" heels and piss artist lads out for a shag on the scene because of the TV ads from KFC and Felix - now out comes a film and again they will surface - just as they had just started to go back into the woodwork.

I just get really pissed off with glib comments, especially when its about a film production which is aimed at 'mainstream' filmgoers who haven't a clue about the concept or content.

The whole thing reminds me of a BBC 2 play where boy meets girl etc. in the early 80's.

Can't remember the title but at least the music was authentic.

those badges on those skirts they had on at Stoke werent vinyl were they :thumbup: (oops yes they were)

Most films have comedy in 'em Tabs.

Also, with the best will in the world, this isn't a Francis Ford Coppolla huge budget production either by the looks of it. My guess is they'll go for a whimsical typical British boring comedy anyway, as the only UK films which have done well internationally just lately have been the bloody awful Richard Curtis/Hugh Grant type vehicles.....

Hope it isn't. But the chances of anyone getting it 100% right are incredibly remote IMO - I guess the proof will be in the pudding when we eventually get to see it......

I totally take your point but have to disagree. If this is a film set in the Northern Soul scene and the characters are acting within that scene then the music should be number one on the list to keep authenticity. I'm not talking about the incidental music that adds to the drama or the scene takeing place I'm more concerned with music used in specific scenes related to the Casino. This can only be original Northern Soul that WAS played at the Casino if it isn't the real deal then your characters will just not be beleivable to the audiance. What comes across to me is that there is someone sat in an office looking at the potential spin offs to this film hopeing that by including up to date artists on the soundtrack will guarentee CD sales.(Quadraphenia album sales circa a million plus!!!) As far as bringing the music to a wider audiance KFC and others have been doing that for a while with great success and they haven't felt the NEED to re-record the songs with more up to date artists. The money your waisting on Duffy and co would finance the licensing of thousands of original Northern Soul records as most of the artists are dead and the copyright is held by smaller publishing companies who would bend over backwards to get a few bob out of their back catologue? If you are trying to emulate the success of films like 'Dreamgirls' then your barking up the wrong tree they recorded new songs in the vain of the era they were depicting ADDING authenticity to the story line. I doubt if any of the artists you are in discussions with are going to record new songs in the same vain are they? I agree that this is a motion picture not a history lesson but the best films have a foothold in reality no matter what the subject matter and usually the more realistic the film the better the audiance reaction. The Northern Soul scene IS the music. Wigan Casino existed BECAUSE of the music. People went there BECAUSE of the MUSIC. So if your doing a movie with it as a backdrop to the characters it just deosn't make sense to ignore the MUSIC? Personally I would have saved the money and spent it on a lead actor with some pulling power. An A lister to get the bods thru the door! THEN I would have given the public a sound track that would have knocked their collective socks off, one that would have them dancing in the isles! One that was truelty authentic, one that had SOUL! NORTHERN SOUL!

Bloody hell, you really have got a sense of humour failure! I mentioned the Beatles films merely as a comparison. Great iconic 60's films with a sense of the time, great music and humour!

That was Out On The Floor,...and i still remember the outcry about that...i myself wrote a letter to Echoes at the time decrying the false representation of the Northern scene even then...the dancing was a total joke..and the whole storyline was more suited to nightclubs rather than a soul one...Delxxx

I'd say the chances of anyone getting it 100% right is an impossibility.

Everyone's experience of any night is totally unique to them, despite being in the same hall at the same time as God knows how many other people.

The one thing everyone did have in common though was the music.

Bugger the story - the MUSIC is the most crucial part of this film - and that means the ORIGINAL music and not a load of second rate cover versions!

95% of non soulies who watch it won't even be aware there is still a scene.

Some of the posts on here really make me laugh, the film will have practically no impact on the Soul scene at all. In Leeds there are loads of bars / clubs already playing Northern / Motown / Funk: North bar / Milos / Sandinista / The Wardrobe / Smokestack / Baby Jupiter / Hi-Fi / Brighton beach / Adelphi etc... There are loads of young people who are aware of the music already but dont come flooding on to the Northern scene, they like the music but dont have the obsession we have and this film wont change that either in my opinion, although it may make it a bit 'cooler' but saying that, the people i meet out and about already think soul is pretty cool anyway, and i'm talking about an age group of early 20's / 30's.

As for damaging the scene or its reputation, again it will make no difference at all, no such thing as bad publicity...

Lighten up, its just a film, go out and watch it then decide - its not all doom and gloom, just a film - LOL!! :thumbup::wave:

I think in the grand scheme of things this is spot on. The only potentially bad thing is if this muddies the waters for any further productions by not doing a competent job or by misrepresenting any parts of the scene in a negative way. Having said that it's a film produced for entertainment, with a very short shelf life, that will increase awareness momentarily. It may convet or it may embarrass, we'll soon see.

Yes the BBC play was called Out On The Floor. It starred Rees Dinsdale (think thats right). I am still convinced that this was filmed in the Casino because I can't see how the could have recreated it so accurately. The play is utter crap but the soundtrack - all culled from Grapevine singles and lp's - is very good. Needless to say if anyone wants a copy of this I can supply it.

Some of the posts on here really make me laugh, the film will have practically no impact on the Soul scene at all. In Leeds there are loads of bars / clubs already playing Northern / Motown / Funk: North bar / Milos / Sandinista / The Wardrobe / Smokestack / Baby Jupiter / Hi-Fi / Brighton beach / Adelphi etc... There are loads of young people who are aware of the music already but dont come flooding on to the Northern scene, they like the music but dont have the obsession we have and this film wont change that either in my opinion, although it may make it a bit 'cooler' but saying that, the people i meet out and about already think soul is pretty cool anyway, and i'm talking about an age group of early 20's / 30's.

As for damaging the scene or its reputation, again it will make no difference at all, no such thing as bad publicity...

Lighten up, its just a film, go out and watch it then decide - its not all doom and gloom, just a film - LOL!! :yes::(

Nah we've bickered about this film before. It'll all be forgotten about until it comes out then we'll bicker all over again.

Funding aside, there's enough of us here (if we were that bothered) to make a real one.
