As far as I'm aware - and it's something the director and myself are totally commited to, ALL the music used in SOULED OUT's going to be original source, from the northern stuff, (and a lot of it, too), used in the Casino sequences down to some God-awful poptastic numbers for the earlier scenes set in a local "discotheque." I can't disclose full song-list yet as there are still negotiations about rights etc ongoing, but once they're completed I'll publish... But it seems that's going to have to be in another thread altogether, because although I was genuinely reacting to an earlier question on this thread about further info on any of the three mooted NS films, it appears I've upset the balance of things. Apologies to any applecarts I've turned over - it was certainly not deliberate.

For the star struck, there is the opportunity to register your interest in becoming an extra, filming August/September. I wonder if there is any place for an over-weight 50 plusser with a pacemaker?

What made you write a retro piece Jeff? Why not set a story against the backdrop (no pun intended) of the current rare soul scene?

Actually maybe Souled Out II could bring Joe's story up to the present day? If you need a co-writer for the second one...

Love to think it could be, John, and thanks for your good wishes - the good wishes of the overwhelming majority of people on the scene, in fact. Seems like so many people have just been waiting for a feature film on the subject to actually happen, and I dearly hope this proves to be the one. Gotta say, fingers crossed an'all, but the signs seem good. The first script readthrough by just about the full cast took place last friday at Kings Hall, Stoke, and if anything it was even better than I could've hoped for. Everyone connected to this is absolutely into what it could be, with a small army of people already working away to recreate the look and feel of small-town northern life in 1974, and the main cast have been knocking themselves out for weeks taking lessons in NS dance from two amazing instructors already well-known to many out there, Liam Q and Keb Darge.

And my mistake - it was baggies, of course, and not flares that ruled the fashion roost back then. I should've taken another look at the photos in my marriage album...

Dunno about you Trev, but a well fitted wig and I might be able to get away with being an extra as I still have the body of a 24 year old. Oh, I'll need the dancing lessons as well!

Good luck with this Jeff....how do you go about finding the clothes for 1974? the fabrics, and styles are so different to today.....and the hair styles? so glad you are gonna use original music lets face it the music was/is the most important thing and the reason people did/do travel from one end of the country to another !

as far as the fine detail about clothes etc,i was a courier for the bbc once and you will be amazed how much retro stuff film companies have stashed away...and lets face it even the great quodrophenia had many little mistakes,which after youve seen it a million times can be more interesting than the film....gp's,px's neither of which were around in 64 and the who double album next to the record player at the house party !! bad one that

ummm ...a bit worrying...what does contributing to the soundtrack mean ????......maybe making the music "that tells the story" such as the whos music in quod....surely not for the casino scenes.....can you imagine sting dancing to secret affair or the jam at brighton in 64 ! .....thats if he could dance ofcourse !!

Good luck to the film makers with this venture, I'll certainly give it a watch.

How much more anticipation there would be (from me at least) if there was an authentic period soundtrack, yer Morris Chestnut's & Eddie Holmans... Maybe less of the love & romance and more DS fleecing people on trains, green & clears etc etc ....

Absolutely right - Many didn't even have money for trains - loads used to get on train with platform tickets then leap off 'wrong side' of train onto tracks at Wigan then leg it with Transport Police in hot pursuit!! Those were the days

I know how much getting the music right on the nose means to almost everyone out there, (all connected to the project too, believe me: it's the music's going to set the pace of so much of what happens onscreen), but like I said, licensing talks are still ongoing about a whole lot of stuff and that's a minefield / labyrinth I'm not planning on going anywhere near. What I can do, though, is let you in on the song titles I specified for key moments in the script to hopefully whet a few appetites as well as give you a little taster of where we'd like to be once the talks are finalised and the deals done. In all probability there's gonna be a few of these fall by the wayside to be replaced by others, and the action during the Casino sequences will have a non-stop playlist quite apart from the stuff below, but this is what I used as my starting point:

I'm not expecting everyone to love them. There might even be a few who actually hate them, (I know it seems unlikely, but this is a strange world we live in). But for me they all felt right for the moments in the script where we wanted music that meant something.
