Guest Brian Ellis Posted March 3, 2004 Posted March 3, 2004 Hi Anna Interesting question. In many ways the internet is adding to the dimension provided by fanzines. It is however a much more random and ad hoc series of comments, questions and observations compared to the more structured framework of a more professionally produced hard copy medium. Fanzines have always been very much a part of the Northern Soul scene and I doubt that they will really lose their position within it. But the internet is perhaps more vibrant and instant; it will undoubtedly further develop its own unique features including sound and video capacity. Good luck with the dissertation. Brian
grant Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 Agree with Brian Anna. Fanzines to me are an excellent source for info on records, old and new, artists profiles etc. However the benefit of the internet partculalry soul sites such as soul-source provide is that they do provide us with up-to-the-minute gig guides and reviews and of course not forgetting sound bytes. Plenty of room for both - best asking the promoters of the mags whether sales are up or down but even that would be difficult to interpret as being due to the advent of internet soul sites. Hope video helped you Grant

Can only agree with Grant and Brian, internet a great source for on the spot info and a place to talk b*******!!! :-))) Still like to buy the fanzines and not everyone embraces technology so still a great source for useful info. Also fanzines deffo better reading material when on the throne (unless you happen to have PC there too) :-))))
Neiljon31 Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 Think it has definitely altered buying records, it seems quite old fashioned these days to write a cheque, send it off and wait for the vinyl to arrive. It's quicker and easier and more expensive now (is that due to the internet?). One thing wo'nt alter with fanzines though, a lot of folk 'collect' them and will always want the real thing in their hands. i'm not sure if any old web pages are fetching money on ebay yet.

There may be a mix issue regarding interest segments but, a good first pass correlation test? Other thing is .. has the base flexed on total volume of communication? As someone already said, internet is instantaneous, and debate can be spontaneous leading to higher volume. Another point might be, the assumption that there ever was (or still is) a need for fanzines in the first place, or maybe rather, what is the shape of that need. What drove the explosion of fanzines, demand? or writer enthusiasm (maybe a simillar passion that lead to the explosion of 1000's of independent no hope releases by passion driven black artists back in 60's usa). Alot of these fanzines end up being given away, even the glossys including Manifesto. Maybe, just maybe the whole fanzine and now internet thing is just nothing more than a further expression of the unwritten, only understood from the inside, undying emmotional flame called SOUL. As the soul fraternity put it 'Keep the Faith' Good Luck with the essay soul lady!! Ask yourself why you're choosing this topic for your dissertation? Answer that, and you may find the knowledge you seek, the clues may just lie within. Regards, Donk
