Peter99 Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I'm not sure if I know enough records that came out on the label to comment. The Montclairs is quality though. Can be a tricky little number to dance to - particularly these days!
Sean Hampsey Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Bessie Banks Try To Leave Me If You Can. Beat me to it ya rascal! Ok, I'll go with Roshell Anderson "Know What You're Doing When You Leave"... Great thread Blake. Sean

Guest Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Montclairs Hung up on your love, gets my vote BH Frankie and the classical's !!!!!! Just perfect !
AlanB Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Wow - Didnt know that - Gonna find one to compare! US release has thinner sound, Contemporaries release (only release of this mix I think) more punchy, much better. Alan
Steve Edgar Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Major Lance - How Can You Say Goodbye - Contempo or Deon Jackson - I Can't Go On - Contempo~Raries Deon's alternate take on "I Cant Go On" yup would agree on that one, where did that come from? same as Carla take but with girly bits. also thro into the pot JJ Barnes "Sara Smile" and Gladys Knight &Pips "Why Dont You Love Me" an excellent Van McCoy number that I dont believe came out on VJ, but would love to kno if it did! Major Lance...didnt that come out first as an instrumental on Contempo by The Fabulous Echoes ? steve
Steve Edgar Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Wow - Didnt know that - Gonna find one to compare! due to it's poularity now, quite hard to pick up, Its on the B side of his "Love Makes The World Go Round" issue on Contempo Raries steve
Sean Hampsey Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Frankie and the classical's !!!!!! Just perfect ! On Contempo? Never seen one o' them! Sean
Pauldonnelly Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 The Major - Live at the Torch...from the opening line "that's what you call a typical Martin Ellis cock up" to the end it's a live recording that encapsulates one of the greatest evenings and venues of ALL TIME. "Go ahead bother" "
Guest Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 due to it's poularity now, quite hard to pick up, Its on the B side of his "Love Makes The World Go Round" issue on Contempo Raries steve Deon Jackson " I Can't Go On" Contempo-Raries great tune especially with the girls backing him - just right for today. harpo1 Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 MONTCLAIRS "HUNG UP ON YOUR LOVE" Well said Toad old mate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest Darks Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Bessie Banks of course. "Caught you in a lie" would be close. I also like the other side of Roshell Anderson, Jesse Boone "No particular one" which is ace and you could dance to it if you were that way inclined. I really love Doris Duke "Please come back" which is the other side of "Grasshopper". I think it is a Contempo production as opposed to Jerry Williams. A real over the top production with strings but works for me. Love the Major Lance record mentioned as well as "How can I be sure" ? a cover of Sydney Joe Qualls, great version. Not forgetting "Dark and Lonley". Then of course is the Deep Soul compelations... So much great stuff. Regards Alan

Guest Darks Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 B*llocks forgot about Bobby Patterson Another I've just remembered, but why would I ever forget! Skip Mahoney and the Casuals "Bless my Soul".
Pete S Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Got to be JJ Barnes - Sweet Sherry - there's very few records on any label better than this yet I constantly forget to put it on my top 20's for some reason. Montclairs is one of the worst for me, a right mess of a record.
Nickinstoke Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Fontella Bass had some fine releases on Contempo, including "Now that I've found a good thing", and the wonderful "I'm leaving the choice to you" Nick
Reforee Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 (edited) Most of them covered for me .....Howeefeel, etc etc, but one that has slipped off everybodies radar is a great little 70s dancer by Joann Williams "Maybe Tomorrow" from 1977. The Man In Black Edited August 3, 2008 by reforee
Guest biggray1 Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 anyone know Howwefeel 45...its some where in here but cant find the bugger...class stuff

Montclairs is one of the worst for me, a right mess of a record. Agree with Sweet Sherry, and having Rare Stamps since the early 70's, I have always been a fan of Baby Please Come Home which also came out on Contempo. As for the Montclairs, from my first hearing at the Mecca this is a record I never tire of hearing and not a bad B side either.
Chris L Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 Johnny Williams Just a little misunderstanding The Contempo release is actually much better than the original Bashie one, the demo Bashie sucks, mostly on sytrene, still got mine Chris L

Eddie Hubbard Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 I'd go for Bobby Patterson , If he hadn't slipped up and got caught [as mentioned by Paul ] , actually found a Montclairs the other week at a car boot for 50p , which was nice .Best ,Eddie

As for the Montclairs, from my first hearing at the Mecca this is a record I never tire of hearing and not a bad B side either. Sure I read somewhere that 'Sweet Sherry' from the Volt/Stax l.p is the first take and differs slightly from the UK Contempo 45. Anyone confirm this? Also, don't forget J.J's 'To An Early Grave' on contempo, nice mid-tempo.
Guest s0ul45 Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 (edited) Well spotted Darks, the Jesse Boon track is wonderful. I'm surprised at you Binsy forgetting the Bobby Patterson!! The way I'm going though it's 'To An Early Grave' Maybe I'll get a 'Second Chance' Edited August 4, 2008 by s0ul45
