Not against charity really but the overkill is tooooooooooo much... I want bright thinking promoters who focus on quality music and provide us with quality djs too.. We can give to charity in other ways but keep them headline banners away from me.. Most people, particularly our age group, have been touched by some personal catastrophe or other, so it's easy to see how people have soft spots for certain causes. There already are bright thinking promoters with quality DJ's and music, can't see what that's got to do with charity events?? Winnie :-) Link to comment Social source share

Stevie, over the years i have been to so many 'new' venues to a charity event, only to find it littered with flyers plugging all future events at said venue, Does make you think, Also known established events put on a 'charity' night, not on the same regular night that event runs on, so in effect kept their 'bread and butter night' as it is and perhaps used another events regular slot in the calender to run the charity night, without any comebacks, after all who can complain about a charity event? Having said all that, i'm sure there's many worthy causes benefit from the many events run for all the 'right' reasons, and they should be applauded, Pete Link to comment Social source share

I've known people set up events for Charity so they get the venue they want for free (or much cheaper) I'll bet some folks have used it as a way to test a venue (I haven't however!), cheaper venue and DJ's will tend to do it FOC when its for charity. So many people just want to run a night or DJ that this is a great way for them to find the opportunity. Loads of people asked me if Venue 45 was a replacement for Bury Town Hall when I did my Christies night earlier this year. I am all for charity nights though. I love soul music and I love Christie Hosp. Loads of people supported that because Christie Hosp has had a big impact on this scene. (worded badly cos the boss is coming over!) lol. Jayne.x. p.s. - for the record, I'll be doing two events for Christies next year too, one to mark the anniversary of my friend's death and the other to mark her birthday. x. And seeing as these people make & take nothing what has that 'getting more through the door' comment got to do with anything ? Becoming very disenchanted with some of the people on here if they think something like this is a worthwhile thread. Especially disappointed in you Stevie, i had you down as a decent upstanding guy. Thought your recent 'Thrush etc' thread was tacky in the extreme too & i wonder if 90% of the people on here would have got away with it ? Come on Stevie you are better than this ! Just one last comment to all the negative moan for the sake of it participants in this thread ; Perhaps when you have watched people that you love suffer & wither before your eyes you might have some inkling as to why others try & raise money for causes that might stop someone else going through the same. Then you might think twice about insulting people on the subject just for the fun of it ? The probable reason these people do it in the form of a Ns night is just because it is their hobby/love & something they have an interest in. Isn't that the form that most fund raising takes ??? And yes , before any clever arse comes in with it, i have done it myself. No one is forcing you to attend these nights, & No one is saying you can't think these things to yourself, but does it really serve any purpose in spouting it out ? Perhaps you ought to ask yourselves that ? I'm sure the various charities would have an opinion of it !!!! Link to comment Social source share

And our most recent event, which was held on June 27th, and Jumpin Joan kindly DJ'd for us we managed to raise £1.511.00 and again every single penny went to BCH, and this time to help fund "The Kidney Kids Appeal". Dave
A brave subject, this! I can see both points of view. I think there's less suspicion about an established promoter/club dedicating the odd event to charity compared to a relatively new face starting a night for charity, which causes some to question their priorities. The whole issue wasn't helped last year when a certain promoter decided to dedicate a regular ailing event to charity but was then unwilling to furnish proof of donations when asked. mrs soul
its a double edged sword in my opinion, to be totally honest, and some of you may not like my reply, I really did not get into this scene for charity events, its the last thing on my mind, call me a selfish git if you want, and I certainly dont want it in my face, all the while, I dont mind the odd one, but on a regular basis,in that I mean every week, is no no for me,yes i am doing Chrissie's, but more so cos its her 50th birthday, the money she raises is a bonus for her particular cause, and good on her, sometimes people do charity for the wrong reasons, eg; an excuse to be a DJ, or the only way to get some sort of venue going which amounts to the same thing, what I do, is a direct debit to my particular cause, which at the moment is to train a guide dog for the blind, when the puppy which is called DANA ,is ready to be homed, I will sponsor another Charity of my choice, now for some people this is a very private matter, and one they may feel passionate about, but thats up to them, and of course it goes without saying that there are some great minded folks about who really care, so good for them, and dont get me wrong we have had our fair share of health problems, but I would not dream of thrusting it in evrybodys face,in all, I think we are all caring people, and some things are closer to home than we like, I know quite a few peeps who are dealing with, or have dealt with serious health issues, and the one thing they want to get back to is soul, and they never utter a word about their personal stuff, all I am saying is that I would not like to see our northern scene being taken over completely by charity or should I say charidee.. Guest toby
Southgate (Soulgate) is not a charity event a such,Its a tribute to our old dear departed mate Mr Randy Cozens, The Soulgate was run by him, and even after his death we kept it going in his memory as a tribute to a proper soul man. The charity side of it comes into play when the buckets are bought round for a bit of a collection, and if you dont put in the girls Caroline, annie will give ya bashin',the buckets are a bit of fun in reality. So technicaly NOT a charity event, more of a soulfull piss up to celebrate Randy. as it always was. Toby.. Link to comment Social source share

Maybe another section for charity events If i did a charity event then i would just include that maybe in a line with all the details.. Not make it the headline banner.. The northern soul landmine charity all dayer headline just don't get me moist.. We run a charity soul night called bruces do its been going 8 years now,for cancer research a well worthy cause they need all the money they can get.....i can see where your coming from though steve, whats the answer i dont know really? Reg
its a double edged sword in my opinion, to be totally honest, and some of you may not like my reply, I really did not get into this scene for charity events, its the last thing on my mind, call me a selfish git if you want, and I certainly dont want it in my face, all the while, I dont mind the odd one, but on a regular basis,in that I mean every week, is no no for me,yes i am doing Chrissie's, but more so cos its her 50th birthday, the money she raises is a bonus for her particular cause, and good on her, sometimes people do charity for the wrong reasons, eg; an excuse to be a DJ, or the only way to get some sort of venue going which amounts to the same thing, what I do, is a direct debit to my particular cause, which at the moment is to train a guide dog for the blind, when the puppy which is called DANA ,is ready to be homed, I will sponsor another Charity of my choice, now for some people this is a very private matter, and one they may feel passionate about, but thats up to them, and of course it goes without saying that there are some great minded folks about who really care, so good for them, and dont get me wrong we have had our fair share of health problems, but I would not dream of thrusting it in evrybodys face,in all, I think we are all caring people, and some things are closer to home than we like, I know quite a few peeps who are dealing with, or have dealt with serious health issues, and the one thing they want to get back to is soul, and they never utter a word about their personal stuff, all I am saying is that I would not like to see our northern scene being taken over completely by charity or should I say charidee.. Yep that sounds about right Mrs Soul And I'm certain Steve wasn't having a pop against all charity events but there are rather a lot and sometimes it does make you feel old when you think nearly every bloody night out is for charity. I would have thought the main reason most of us go out is to escape real life? Link to comment Social source share
Guest dundeedavie
i don't mind charity events as such as long as they still offer the paying punter a good night . i've dj'd at charity events whre "johnny" down the road is getting a spot "because it's for charity" and dj's play boots and cd's " because it's for charity" ....that isn't good enough , just because it's for charity you shouldn't drop standards Link to comment Social source share

I would have thought the main reason most of us go out is to escape real life? I do my CIN night and have done so for the last four years, its gone up each time £1400,then £1700,last year,£2,580,what this year, its down to kind soulies and their decency, and willingness to give and attend,I am so grateful and as long as people want to come I will always carry on.. And if it better lives thats all you need to keep you doing it,its a crap world, and helping others is a wonderful feeling Ian Edwards CIN Organiser Bilston Link to comment Social source share
Guest Simon
Southgate (Soulgate) is not a charity event a such,Its a tribute to our old dear departed mate Mr Randy Cozens, The Soulgate was run by him, and even after his death we kept it going in his memory as a tribute to a proper soul man. I agree Toby, i used to go when Randy ran it also & a mighty fine do it was. Must admit i wouldn't necessarily think of that as a charidee do either, as you say more just carrying on the fine work that Randy did. Steve G
Everytime i click on events there is another charity event Do you think its a case of people who set up these events then get a chance to dj or do we just have so many caring people on this scene.... Not against charity really but the overkill is tooooooooooo much... I want bright thinking promoters who focus on quality music and provide us with quality djs too.. The northern soul landmine charity all dayer headline just don't get me moist.. Get yer tin hat on. Haven't seen that many, but if you don't like them don't go. The scene is getting older. As we get older priorities change and I think more people are happy to put something back in which will benefit charities that are either helping the less fortunate or researching illnesses and cures. Everyday when I go through Liverpool St there's someone shaking a tin at me for some just cause. Every week someone at work is doing something for charity - it's the way it is these days. There remains no shortage of good causes to support. I choose which ones I sponsor, or put money in the tin for. I wouldn't really have a beef if every event in soul land was a charity one - you pays your money and takes your choice. Having been mentioned by name I will reply to the comment about charity soul do's. I have appeared at three events that include a charity element this year - 3 Greyhounds which was a charity all dayer, Soulgate (as Toby says not a charity event per se more a celebration of Randy but with a charity element), and Chrissie's (again a birthday bash but with a charity element). I am quite happy with this and do not think it is overkill. If I think that way as a DJ, why would the paying public have a problem with giving something to charity? Or are you really a big promotor in disguise? Edited July 30, 2008 by Steve G Link to comment Social source share
Guest Bogue
Bugger me, we've all got a bit cynical in our old age haven't we? I was going to put on a charity soul night (almost an allnighter but not quite) in aid of the local hospital who cared for my missus' Grandmother when she was absolutely riddled with Cancer. I wasn't going to DJ as I would have been too busy organising the event - so I wouldn't have been 'bigging' up my DJing profile. Every penny made would have gone to the charity. Posts like this make me think why bother.... You don't strike me as the sort to let a few moaners stop you Pikey ! So MAKE SURE you do it now & thrust two fingers firmly in the air its a double edged sword in my opinion, to be totally honest, and some of you may not like my reply, I really did not get into this scene for charity events, its the last thing on my mind, call me a selfish git if you want, and I certainly dont want it in my face, all the while, I dont mind the odd one, but on a regular basis,in that I mean every week, is no no for me,yes i am doing Chrissie's, but more so cos its her 50th birthday, the money she raises is a bonus for her particular cause, and good on her, sometimes people do charity for the wrong reasons, eg; an excuse to be a DJ, or the only way to get some sort of venue going which amounts to the same thing, what I do, is a direct debit to my particular cause, which at the moment is to train a guide dog for the blind, when the puppy which is called DANA ,is ready to be homed, I will sponsor another Charity of my choice, now for some people this is a very private matter, and one they may feel passionate about, but thats up to them, and of course it goes without saying that there are some great minded folks about who really care, so good for them, and dont get me wrong we have had our fair share of health problems, but I would not dream of thrusting it in evrybodys face,in all, I think we are all caring people, and some things are closer to home than we like, I know quite a few peeps who are dealing with, or have dealt with serious health issues, and the one thing they want to get back to is soul, and they never utter a word about their personal stuff, all I am saying is that I would not like to see our northern scene being taken over completely by charity or should I say charidee.. But Lou, no one is frogmarching you to every charity night & no one is forcing you to read the ads, can't you just live & let live ? (next bit not aimed at you Lou) Lets just re-cap on the complaints of this thread before it gets twisted. Too many charity banners & too many adverts in events. 1./ Correct me if i'm wrong, but Mike has gone some way to sorting that by only allowing a certain amount each month which have to be pre booked. 2./ Don't read the ads & don't go to the events........ Simple ? i don't mind charity events as such as long as they still offer the paying punter a good night . i've dj'd at charity events whre "johnny" down the road is getting a spot "because it's for charity" and dj's play boots and cd's " because it's for charity" ....that isn't good enough , just because it's for charity you shouldn't drop standards Yawn a fookin rama......... here come those bus wheels again ! If that's your standards that's fair enough....... Just don't go to these other do's then !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chaiman Mao would have been proud of some on here i reckon ! Perhaps in a few years time Mao suits will have replaced Baggies & Vests ? Link to comment Social source share

chrissie
Perhaps in a few years time Mao suits will have replaced Baggies & Vests ? Well it would be preferable ............Steve may have a point but my argument is that he tarred all such events with the same brush. I don't give a monkeys as long as I have a good night out..... and just because it is a charity event doesn't mean the standard of the sounds will not be up to scratch I feel very proud that I have the quality of DJs offering to play at my birthday not only free but paying to go in as well QoFxx Edited July 30, 2008 by chrissie Link to comment Social source share

At 3 Greyhounds, and Soulgate apart from the odd "carver" it was 99%+ original vinyl - no boots at all as far as I could tell - and I do keep an eye on these things being an honoury member of the "soul police". As for Chrissie's event I expect the same looking at the line up - nothing offensive likely to be on the decks..........unless Chrissie plays her copy of Holly St James or Liz Verdi of course Link to comment Social source share
